Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

My grandparents raised my mom, aunts & uncles in Kensington, in the 40’s-60’s. The entire neighborhood was beautiful, thriving & a great place to raise a family. By the 90’s, it was already going downhill fast. It’s so depressing to see what it has become. I wouldn’t drive thru the area now-it’s heartbreaking & dangerous. My childhood memories are all that remain of what it once was. 😖😢 So grateful my parents moved us away before this devastation set in. Your environment definitely plays a role in what you can become. 💔

You know what happened, businesses went bankrupt or moved, leaving multitudes of people without jobs, the people didnt move cause this was home. Then with the lack of jobs came crime to supplement the loss of money, and it continued to run out of control.

There used to be laws against public intoxication, vagrancy and loitering. People who broke these laws were thrown in the county jail. Repeat offenders were sent to a facility to be rehabilitated. Those were the good old days.
so true. when I was a kid we just left and rode our bikes all over for hours, my mom didn't know where I was and was not concerned......I came home for lunch and then at dark. Those were the days.

The vagrancy and loitering laws are still enforceable however there is no room in the county jail and the rehab facilities are over stretched. There is a waiting list to get rehab services.

9:30 Looks worse than in the third world. I've seen several clips of the misery in Philadelphia and they all have the wrong focus.
It is easy to criticize individuals and just as easy (apparently) to not criticize the city and country's government.
Every time I see these clips of the city, I am reminded of a dystopian computer game where no living person wants to be even for a short visit.
In short, you get the society you deserve by neglecting your environment.
Atleast in third world countries, drug addicts are still functional and work to provide for their family. They have no government hand outs. It's every man for themselves. Drug addicts in North America are more entitled and expect steak in homeless shelters. I offered a NEW avocado sandwich to homeless guy and told me it looked disgusting. I never offer anything again. My husband worked in a homeless shelter as a social worker and said most of them complained about the food. There's a reason why they got into that position in the first place.

I hear reasons and excuses given for homelessness, but the biggest reason is many of these people are where they want to be, they dont want to work period. Some are due to loss of a job and no place or no one to turn to for help, or they have burned all their bridges due to drug use and they haven’t done anything bad enough yet to be imprisoned. Which doesn’t help ether they are just thrown in the mix with others like themselves or worse and expected to rehab themselves. Its sad yes, it dehumanizing, its still their choice. So what do the cities and states do, nothing that’s what allow what happens to happen, there isn’t anyplace to put them all, so what is to be done if rehab doesn’t work, prison doesn’t work, they don’t want to work, you cant help someone if they don’t want your help. Where do you put them, this country is in a crises due to our government, everyone is having a hard time making ends meet, so we cant help. So, what now, what is to be done, tell me, give me an answer.

How old are you? These individuals are deeply in Addiction and most are also suffering Mental Health issues. Nothing on earth can make an Addict get clean not even jail. They have to want it. Many people who have been diagnosed with serious Mental Illness have tried the drugs prescribed and hate them and go off them. We closed our Mental Hospitals in the 1970’s and it is Illegal to force a person to accept Medical Care or take medicine. To get a job you need a Social Security card and State Photo ID. Those things get stolen when they sleep. To replace them requires a physical address where you legally live full time, these people are homeless. They pretty much all have been beaten and raped on the street yes the men too. They are badly broken. The pain they are in is beyond imagining and street drugs help them forget for a little while. Each person you see was once a precious, innocent, loved baby. You are so very lucky you are not one of them. You are so lucky you have no family who are addicts. All the love in the world can not unbreak broken people nor can that love and forgiveness cure Addiction. Count your blessings.
