I'm sorry but heaped roof looks horrible. I will go for hidden roof anyday. It's more modern and minimalist.

The heap roof is not modern. With proper materials and designs, the hidden roof could be waterproofed.
The correct amount of sand , cement and stone must be used; the concrete must be vibrated with concrete vibrating tools to reduce air bubbles in the concrete. Waterproof chemicals must be added to the concrete.
Most importantly, there must be proper slope and adequate amount of drains. Minimum of 3 inches pipe must be used for the drainage pipe. All the 4 corners and the inter spaces must have drain pipes.
Finally, the top of the concrete must be waterproofed with either coating or tiles. If using tiles, make sure you buy porcelain tiles cos it has less than 0.5% water absorption rate. You can add additional protective membrane called waterproof tiles underpayment, a plastic barrier laid under the tiles. Also choose large tile size to reduce grouting lines.

Leakage is secret roof is due to wrong approach. It's the approach. Both wall flashing and waterproofing are usually poorly done to save cost.
