Good video, paced just right. Should have mentioned the 12 minute bleeding procedure. *connect charger, seal up coolant system, turn car on without starting, turn on headlights, turn heat on high to auto at 84*, press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds, wait 13 minutes for pump to auto bleed the system, then top off coolant. more like this!

You don't need head lights on or have to put it on "high". All you need to do is set heat to max, put fan up 1 notch and press accelerator for 10 seconds while the car is on "not started" lol
I’m up for the challenge of fixing most issues with my BMW and after viewing this video I was ready to replace the thermostat. What I wasn’t ready for was NOT being able to remove the two hoses that were clamped on, after struggling for over 4 hours I gave up and decided to simply cut them off and replace them and while a lot of you might think that this was unnecessary it was not worth the effort of continuing to try to remove something that would just not come off and after looking at the old worn hoses I’m glad that I did. This job is truly a knuckle buster and now that I’m done I’m glad that I attempted the job. I also want to thank those of you that suggested the fan and the reservoir be removed, that extra space really helped out with this nightmare.
For anybody else doing this -- best tip I can give is to drop the intercooler, then you can get channel locks on those two hoses and wiggle them a bit until they come off.

At my time at the BMW stealership I did a pile of these and of course the electric waterpump. Not too bad of a job after you do it a few times. It becomes almost second nature. Make sure you always buy the e-torx screw set and replace them. They are single use for the waterpump, t-stat, valve cover, etc.

Awesome, straight to the point video; this job is a pain in the behind to do, due to the narrow space, especially for someone with chunky hands, like me; I got it all done and now I'm stuck with a lower radiator hose that won't latch to the thermostat; it seemed to be okay and after a test run it became loose, leaking all the new coolant I just used; the new kit I bought came with a Borg Warner thermostat while the old one was a Behr; I see a little difference on the end where the hose attaches to and I'm wondering if I should try a new hose or remove and return the thermostat and replace it with the same brand that was there before ; thank you for the video, you just got a new subscriber :)

After spending 2.5 hours getting my 07 328xi home, I'm going to attempt to do this. Did replace blower motor on my own...should be easy peasy. Ordered my thermostat from RockAuto...Amazon looks too cheap...may not last 10k miles. Had h2o pump replaced 2 yrs ago, should've replaced thermostat same time.

@ 2:26 there’s an o-ring that goes to that part. I’m pretty sure the one on mine has gone bad giving the fact that it leaks coolant at low pressure. Do you happen to know the size / part number/ link, as I’m currently trying to source that exact o-ring. Thanks!
Actually BMW had the aluminium one at the beginning then revised the part and new OEM are basically plastic to

That’s what I did when I replaced my water pump and thermostat, I removed a few extra parts but it made the job so much easier

Will these thermostats also cause an overheat condition? I feel vibration in the pump, yet it overheats quite quickly ( but the gauge says 190 degrees and the radiator hoses are cool to warm, plus no heat.
Yes, it's possible for them to get stuck closed, but pretty rare from what I've seen. Usually overheat is caused from the water pump not having blades anymore
Did replacing it fix your problem
Don't mess with the sub frame. Just access the two rear hoses from the TOP, after you move the reservoir aside. Jack stand height is perfect and a 6mm socket on a small extension makes quick work of those two rear hoses. I did loosen the sway bar but I'm not sure that's even necessary.

My 2009 bmw x5 radiator fan full blast and overheat after 15mins drive. No code pop up.
My bmw is 2008 3.0 it’s different, 4 way climate control , adaptive drive , I replace the thermostat and the water pump , I remove the fan and then I had to in-Bolt the AC , and I got it off from the top The water pump but the thermostat I got from the bottom from the backside, my swaybar link was different from yours, it’s hydraulic 😫😫😫

My thermostat housing is leaking on my n54 engine E60 what could be the problem
Could be that one of the O-rings in hose ends is torn or something else. Best to just get in there with a flashlight and see where it might be leaking. Dry it off and check

Better than the video you made on the subject. If you can't figure out how to replace this thermostat after watching this video then you shouldn't be even attempting the job or working on cars at all. Just saying. Anyway, I appreciate your comment and feedback regardless.

Lol dude. Some people aren't mechanically inclined where they have to watch step by step with long intros and stuff.. some people have an idea, but are unsure and just need reassurance as to where something is.
If you are one of those people that need a step by step guide on how to do something, budget bimmers is a better fit for you and they also throw in a few jokes and comedy.
We don't want that. We want a 3 second intro explaining what's happening today, we want the guy to point to the location, throw. Few tips in, and tell us good luck.
