    What a Race! I still own a bright Orange GTR that I've owned since 1983 with an XU1 spec motor putting out 232hp @6000 238ft/lb@3600. Not too sure what Brockys motor was putting out in 72...probably 250+. Love the attention I get when taking it out for a drive. Don;t think I'll ever sell her! Beautiful cars!

      I still think the LJ GTR XU-1 was the pick of all the 'Supercar' era jobs
      GT-HO Phase 3 overrated
      LJ was small, nimble, VERY adequate power, and a bloody Giant killer. Who cares what is fastest or has highest speed
      Not completely relevant in a racing scenario. It's gotta be a fine tuned balance of the whole package. Light means less strain on mechanicals and consumables
      Plus they look like a mid size Great White and came in FANTASTIC colours...
      I take purple, Waiter!

      He was very stupid to take on a completely different concept in racing. He should never have gone into rally driving, they are a different breed, Brock wasn't qualified for that class in my opinion. He should still be alive today if he stuck to what he was best at.

      Hi Steve,
      I don't know enough about motor racing(or rallycross; I presume that is what its called) to be able to give you a constructive opinion. Therefore, based on your reply, you're probably right.

    • @stevej6813
      @stevej6813 Před 21 dnem

      @johnfoster7626
      It's just my opinion too John. I'm no expert either with car racing but I am an experienced road motorcycle rider and I've done a little bit of trail bike riding. My point here is I would never get on a trail bike, take to the bush participating in a race as I'm not experienced enough in that setting, but of course I could confidently race on a bitumen track with one of my road bikes because I'm comfortable on those and I know what I'm doing. Brock was a very skilled driver on bitumen with safety barriers in place, he wasn't skilled enough on dirt with 10,000 trees around him. As I said mate, just merely my opinion based on my experiences. It's healthy to have these discussions with people though such as yourself to get different perspectives on things. It's interesting.

      For once I can have an amicable discussion with someone. And, once again, you're probably right. Brocky conquered the mountain 9 times, a feat that hasn't, and potentially won't ever be equalled. But as you said Steve, he took on a new challenge in a field he wasn't all that familiar with, and he sadly paid the ultimate price.
      Now, in saying all of this, you and I would both agree that motor racing is regarded as 1 of the most dangerous sports in the world. And Brocky could just as easily have been killed doing a lap around Mt Panorama. In saying this participating in an area of motor racing he wasn't completely familiar with didn't help.

    Wonderful. This is when Bathurst had relevance. On a Monday morning you could go to a Holden dealer and put a deposit on a Torana GTR-XU1 knowing it was to all intents and purposes similar to the racing car. Now days there is no comparison. Only the outer shells bear any resemblance to the showroom car.

    The racing recipe that should never have changed. Performance model + roll cage + good tune = you cant go wrong. This clinical crap we watch now is ridiculously expensive and effectively there is no difference between all the cars. Yes folks we call it super cars and no you can't go to your local dealer and buy one.

    They called the XU1 Torana the giant killer.
    Now, what would have happened if the weather had have stayed fine. History may, or may not have been rewritten. The Allan Moffat Falcon potentially( or most likely) would have won.
    But thats not how it worked out. The XU1 Torana is highly regarded as 1 of the greatest motor vehicles ever built.

      Not true mate...this race is about reliability and endurance ,the fords had more problems than just the weather if you watched the race ... the Torrie truly deserved the win and the title of giant killer...

      I'm not saying it didn't. And just for your information I actually owned an LJ Torana and it was a terrific little car with a ton of grunt under the bonnet.
      And yes, you are absolutely correct. The falcons did have several problems, particularly in the braking area. However, ACCORDING to some information I found about that race the Falcons weren't as nimble in the wet weather as the Toranas were.
      Just to be clear I'm NOT taking anything away from the XU1 Torana's Bathurst win. And, with a little help from arguably the greatest race car driver we will ever produce, the XU1 Torana has cemented its place in history and is highly regarded as 1 of the greatest motor vehicles ever built.

      @@johnfoster7626 - the XU1 would have won in 1973 also, except when in the lead, due to an error, Chivas ran out of fuel. one lap too many.. shame ..

    The '70s,'80s & '90s were the truley exciting great years of Bathurst ,now the over regulated, over modified standardisation all cars same brakes, same tyres, same transmission now some guy in the pits on a computer controlling tactics. 72 Harry Firth, reliable car and great driver, and some luck all that was needed. V8 supercars boring.
