Hello, I’m Joe - I’m a guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, recording engineer and teacher!
On this channel you’ll find my original songs, covers and solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements. My favorite music doesn’t fit neatly in a box so you may hear me play folk, blues, jazz, & classic rock - you can call it what you want; I feel honored to speak this timeless language of melody, harmony & rhythm.
I was born on May 25th 1991 in Kempsey, NSW, Australia. Since 2010 I have been based in the US and currently live in the Rocky Mountains of Montana with my wife, Genevieve (who teaches illustration on CZcams!).
I play Maton acoustic guitars, made in Australia (just like me) and am very proud to have my own signature instrument, the JR Signature!
In addition to song performances, you will also find guitar lessons, chord breakdowns, TAB, tutorials, gear reviews and other guitarist related content to help you stay inspired on the instrument.
I stream high quality livestream concerts regularly, if you’d like to be notified when I announce a livestream, you can put your email in here: joes.lnk.to/LivestreamEmail
Please subscribe and ring the bell etc. 🔔
Cheers!

Amazing. That’s not practicing. That’s your brain. You were given the gift to recognize this. It’s just like seeing colors. You just see it. Hear it. You didn’t really learn it. You were blessed. If most viewers are like me they will not ever be able to do what you do but they will not care because they will get so much pleasure out of listening and watching you.
I am 79, retired, Pipe line- Natural Gas Co. I been interested in guitar since I was 13, but life got in the way, but I have always been a fan of Chet Atkins / Jerry Reed / Doyle Dykes/other fingerpickers.
Explaining the theory behind the Dorian scale pulls it all together for me and you explain it beautifully in the simplest terms. No point in playing scales if you don't play over the right chords and understand why. I really appreciate your time and effort to make this video, massive help. Thanks Joe.
At about 20:40 of the Eric Weinstein interview on the Joe Rogan Podcast. You got a name-drop!
"Deliberate Practice" - very effective at improving our musical skills. You're an excellent instructor Joe. Cheers!
Thanks Nelson!
This was great, I have been researching "guitar solo wikihow" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Ganyatty Guitar Gainify - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.
a trick : you can watch movies at Flixzone. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
Thank you, Joe !
❤️🎶❤️ the sound of this guitar and your playing is so enticing 🎸 i love it 👏👏👏
Thank you Joe 🙏🙏🙏
I got interested Dorian from this video. Will take a while, training fingers for speed, but thank you for sharing this. I just been a chord player for years, finally getting to melody and working the patterns.
Thank You So Much for this Great Lesson Brother Joe. God Bless You.
Thank you so much for the lesson, Joe! This was really helpful. You know, while watching this video, I was waiting for the 12th, 7th and 5th fret harmonics which can be used in A dorian/G major, just like how you play them in the beginning of your song "Royal Flush".
Love the tone!
Nicely done Joe!
Thank you.
Very helpful🎶
Very informative Joe! Greetings from Philippines!
Man just found your channel!! Awesome stuff brother!!! Love your Carter’s vintage Guitars videos too! Really well done! Keep ‘em coming!!!
Thanks so much!
I been finger-training, Position-1, Dorian Mode, now for days. I put Ami / D in a looper, and played the note progression over & over. Your so right, it works well, now I will work on Position-2 for finger memory. Years ago, I was studying Mel Bay books, for years, but youTube help like this seems to be more motivating, can pull up randomly, when I can find the time.
Awesome!!! Cheers Gene!
Joe thanks for sharing your knowledge you make it look so easy just shows the dedication and time you put in. Love your playing.
Thanks so much Fred!✌🏻
More tutorials pleeaaaseeee thank you
Yes I ring the belle already
Fabulous lesson, crystal clear, you're as good a teacher as you are a player! 👌❤️🎸
Thank you Steve!!!
I rember listening to out alive about 10 years ago (until today). Its so cool that i can learn the guitar from you now! Thank you very much! Greetings from holland!
Cheers Nigel! Hard to believe that was 10 years ago!
Excellen ..good good...goooooddddd nice
Great lesson Joe. Thanks!
Thanks Kevin!
Thanks for the lessons Joe. Would you do Misty tutorial for the world please? Cheers!
Great lesson Joe!
Thanks Scott!
coincidentally I saw a video where you played a 1960 Les Paul. That brought me to your channel. I like how you explain the theory. I was playing the dorian Scale by ear but I knew nothing about it ( G major scale on A Minor ) Thanks a lot , I will follow your channel from now on !
Love it! Cheers! That Les Paul is an incredible guitar!
I feel the force of Mark Knopfler is strong with this video! You’re the best Joe!
Mark is a big influence!! Cheers Lelov ✌🏻
Amazing lesson joe! This may seem like a silly question, but how can we easily translate the scale from either of the two positions to notes on only one string?
Are you becoming a jazz player? I love the fluid legato playing and the sliding octaves a la Wes Montgomery. The single string soloing is great as a practice aid. Keep up the great work
I am learning finger-style acoustic guitar. Do you have any suggestions on what to begin with.
Hey joe what do you think of billy strings
Just subbed and rang the bell came hear from the 1960 les paul Carter Vintage video which i love the song you played there (was that improv or a cover?) really glad i clicked that video really love your playing.
Cheers! Was a blast playing that incredible guitar. That tune is called Strutting It. From my Time Jumpin album✌🏻
🎸
🔥💜🔥
Joe, you're a good instructor. I have issues improvising a scale, could you elaborate on this somewhere in the future? Thanks
Thanks for the request Tony!
Modes perplex me. Ie, G Ionian has the same notes as A Dorian so what not just play the G Ionian all the way up the guitar neck? Wouldn’t it give the exact same feel?
My head is hurting a little from all that, but I think I understand modes a little more than I did, at least Dorian. I decided to start saying yes to everything, and "I will" instead of "I can't". Gonna take a deep dive to get my head around all this so the distractions have to go. See you next year!
You can do it!
@@Joe_Robinson I will.
Joe, I love this Gibson in your hands. Is this the same one from the Carter's video? and if so I hope its your's now!
Thanks! Yes, it is that very instrument ✌🏻
@@Joe_Robinson Does it have anything special like an Ilitch style noise cancellation? It doesn't seem to have much hum.
Hey Joe. Did you hear your shout-out in the Joe Rogan Podcast lately?
I did! That was wild!! Nice of Eric to do that. Also stoked Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan got a mention!
Great lesson, but the tab link above doesn't seem to work. Is there a tab for your Dorian solo available for purchase?
Thanks for letting me know, not sure why that link isn't working. I don't have this Dorian solo transcribed, but there are TABS for lots of songs and arrangements on my website. www.joerobinson.com/store
@@Joe_Robinson Great, thank you. I have a number of your tabs and really appreciate them, as well as your Synergy course. You have extraordinary talent and musicianship. I would love a lesson/tab for both rhythm and lead jazzy blues (flat picking style), which I know is not your primary focus but I think you would provide unique and valuable insights!
Great quick lesson - thanks! I guess the thumbs down mean some people don't like the Dorian mode - whats not to like? Maybe they are Phrygian enthusiasts? lol
haha! Thanks James!
I meant to say “show cased your playing skills.” My comments are only meant constructively and I do appreciate the lessons.
What a gem this young man is. I have renewed faith real music is in great hands.
I love the stuff you share with us. Seems to me the dorian scale is a scale that is in the same key that your are playing but starts on the second step of the scale. Wouldn't that make the dorian scale in the key of A- b,c#,d,e,f#,g#,a,b? I've taught music theory in HS and college. Seems to me you are playing the dorian scale in the key of G. I may have misunderstood what you are teaching us today.
Thanks Dan. This is a popular point of confusion. A Dorian is the second mode of the G Major scale. The scale formula for the Dorian mode is 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, 6, b7. C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aeolian & B Locrean feature the same notes but start on different degrees of the C major scale. You wouldn't call them C Dorian, C Phrygian, C Lydian etc.
@@Joe_Robinson I guess I was confused by your explanation. I thought you were teaching the key of A. You are exactly right in your response.
@@dansherbon8278 Thanks Dan. I thought I was pretty clear in the video and said that the A Dorian Mode is the second mode of G Major.
Umm. I'll just try that. Might take a while...LOL
First: free lesson, so thank you
Second: Intermediate level
But, 3:36 to like 6:30 solo. Too long.
I felt the lesson show card you left playing skills rather than teaching the mode. I thought you might appreciate the feedback rather than hearing how great you are in all the posts.
Thanks for sharing! It did occur to me I could cut it short but I decided not to. My intention was to demonstrate some different techniques and I find I can say more with my playing than verbally. When I watch guitar tutorials on CZcams I wish people would play more! Usually it’s a too much talk not enough action.. for my taste anyway! I do appreciate the feedback.
Thank you Joe, i agree. I learn and am inspired by the example.
