Lima, Peru: Possibly the Best City in South America
Vložit
- čas přidán 18. 08. 2024
- Obviously, I haven't been to them all, but after spending a month in Lima, Peru, it would not surprise me if it is not the best city in all of South America. The City Centre is historic and stately. Shanty towns such as Villa El Salvador are as real as it gets. Tha Larco Museum is one of the top such places on the continent. The Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods compare favorably to places anywhere.
Join me in this video, as I take a look at numerous aspects of Lima and then decide for yourself if it is a place you could visit or live!
Music provided by Epidemic Sound.
Having retired in 2023, I now travel full-time, seeing places all around the world. My idea for CZcams is to make the videos more about the places and people along the way, than about me. I hope that the experience for you is both entertaining and educational. Perhaps you will come away from my channel with ideas about places you would like to visit or be inspired to forge your own way.
I travel slowly, spending four or five weeks in each destination. Hopefully, that will allow me to go beyond the surface to find the essence of each location. By the end of 2024, I will have visited 14 countries and five of the seven continents. Come along for the journey!
I'm Peruvian and everyone is welcome to Lima!!! I was not born in Lima (I'm from the jungle, Pucallpa) but Lima is charming, chaotic and beautiful with the most beautiful mixtures, the region between Asia and the new world, its diversity is reflected in its famous gastronomy, being the gastronomic capital of the Americas, Lima offers the best restaurants in the world.
I love to hear Peruvians speak so highly of Lima! I certainly found it to be a very enchanting place!
Thank you for watching!
I'm Peruvian from Lima and I would not say it's the best city in South America. There are many cities better than Lima, even within Peru. Lima gets worse every year as well, I left and now live between US and Italy, best choice I made was leaving.
@@DesignedInNola Come on bro, if Colombians say they have the best cities with all the Colombian hired killers, the gota a gota and the rampant prostitution, we Peruvians have even more right! Lima is not perfect, but it has the best food in Latin America and you can't deny that, in addition to the richest history of any city founded by the Spanish. Remember that Lima governed the entire South American region for more than 100 years.
@@gonzalonarvaezordoya7742 If we're just focusing on Peru, I'd say Cusco and Arequipa are much better cities than Lima. There isn't as many opportunities work-wise but if you can become remote digital entrepreneur then those cities are for sure better. Lima is only nice if you're in Barronco, San Isidro, Miraflores, etc.. And even then it gets old. Too many people, chaotic energy.
@@gonzalonarvaezordoya7742 My great grandpa is Jose Santos Chocano, poet Lauriette of Lima. My family established the old town of Barranco. So I'm not saying I hate Lima. It's my home siempre. But there's better cities in LA
How interesting that there are so many people of Chinese descent in Peru. I never would have guessed that! I am learning so much from your travels. Thanks for sharing!
It is an interesting mix of cultures. Now, to be honest, I think the first Chinese were more like indentured servants than people acting totally of their own free will.
Is not only Chinese descent in Peru , there are others Italian, Spain, and others in Peru there are a city called Pozzuso this is a German and danese colony is a beautiful place is a Peruvian city pozzuso but all descent are from Germannies and Danese and they keep that culture . Peru 🇵🇪 is mix of cultures immigrants.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome you are right, chinese start coming here for bussines but after Ramon Castilla free the slaves the farm houses was in need so the spaniards start to bring the chinese, after the 1st world war we have the second wave of chinese immigrants and after the 2nd world war we have a huge wave of japanese immigrants, thats why in southamerica Brasil has the largest group of japanese immigrants and Peru has the second large group but is the 1st in chinese ppl
They say 10% of the Peruvian population have Chinese ethnic backgrounds. The Chinese people arrived in Peru over 150 years ago. They are one the most industrious business people in Peru. The same with the Japanese people. They both prioritize EDUCATION. They are one of the best immigrants that Peru has had.
@@NormaAbad-rq6pn Absolutely true! I'm Peruvian from the jungle, (Pucallpa) and the Japenese even created a technology industry. There are Peruvian technology brands like "Miray" from the Hiraoka group, 100% Japanese/Peruvian capital.
Lima is a very special place, for me the most beautiful city in South America! It has first-class gastronomy, my girlfriend is from Lima, a beautiful Peruvian of Japanese descent, Lima was the place where I saw the largest number of Asians speaking perfect Spanish, there are large communities of Peruvians with Chinese and Japanese ancestors, a very pleasant place.
Lima is one of the best places I have visited on any continent! I loved my time there!
Thank you for taking time to leave a comment.
Cierto soy peruano aunque toda mi familia es japonesa ...un saludo y abrazo 🤗 gracias por conocer Lima y Perú ❤
agree! My beautiful gf is from Arequipa and we go to Lima often to do food tours! I recommend visiting "the white city" Arequipa is a wonderful city with good food!
Every year we travel to Peru, we fall in love with the wonders of this country and especially with its delicious food. Cusco, Puno, Ayacucho, Arequipa and Lima: Miraflores, Barranco and other cities have their appeal and are a delight for our eyes. We were last year in OXAPAMPA and POZUZO for 5 days. It is another experience since it is a different place from Lima and the other states we were able to taste the best butter and meat and good coffee etc., since this city was created by Austro German people.. I recommend them to you... Thanks for the excellent videos, we enjoyed it very much.
There is so much good information in your comments! Thank you for adding to the experience for people who choose to watch my video.
Try to visit Trujillo city, you can see the Museum of the Chan Chan culture, Huaca of the Sun and Moon, the North of Perú´s beaches and their food
Si Oxapampa es hermoso gracias por visitarnos 😅
Lima is my fave city in SA. As I strolled through the bustling streets of Miraflores, the warm sun on my skin and the smell of freshly cooked ceviche in the air, I felt a sense of vibrancy and energy that's hard to find elsewhere. I stopped at a local café and enjoyed a rich Peruvian coffee, watching the lively scene unfold before me, as the day drew to a close, I headed to the Malecón, the scenic cliffside promenade that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The sunset was stunning, with the sky turning pink and orange as the waves crashed against the shore.
I gazed out at the breathtaking view, I felt grateful for this experience in Lima. The city's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty had captured my heart, and I couldn't help but think that Lima was the best city in South America to live in. The warm and welcoming people, the delicious food, the vibrant neighborhoods it all came together to create a truly special place, really a very special place.
That is such a vivid description! You are much more eloquent than me!
Thank you for those wonderful words and for watching my little video!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad I could provide a detailed and engaging description of Peru's beauty. Your video was an excellent inspiration, and I'm happy to have been able to complement it with my words.
How many cities do you know from South America!? Actually is one of the less development cities in our region if we compared the size and population.
Nothing but boring stereotypes - I have been to Göteborg, Sweden and could have written the same text, whilst just changing the names of the places.
Is because you were in Miraflores, the only district that feels like if u were in a first world country. The rest sucks
Beautiful video! Beautiful city! Beautiful country! Thanks for sharing! 🙏
You have that right! Peru and Lima are awesome!
I appreciate you watching!
Welcome to the Perú 🇵🇪
I certainly enjoyed my time in Peru!
Lima es una hermosa ciudad !!
¡Es uno de mis lugares favoritos que he visitado!
If you are still in Lima, take a look around San Isidro, it is a very orderly, clean place and it is the financial center of the capital
I heard about San Isidro, but I never got a chance to go there.
Thank you for the tip!
Until now, this is the best video that I've ever seen about Lima, obviously my city hasn' t the first sights like Mexico City or Buenos Aires cities best ranked but the mixed of old and new sights, the closer to the Pacific Ocean , and more than 3,000 years of history, remember, near Lima, we have the oldest town in the New World, Caral, also Lima was the most important city in South America until eighteenth century, thanks for your dedication to Lima
That is so nice of you to say! There is so much to like about Lima!
Thank you for watching.
5500 years of history.
WOW i love your video, thanks for share
That is so nice of you to say! I am so glad that you see some value in the video.
Miraflores in Lima reminded me of a blend between Santa Monica and Malibu due to its green cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lima is a wonderful city, as vast as LA, and its traffic can get as jammed as in LA. I stayed in Miraflores for the first week, and for the second week, I was at an Airbnb in Barranco. The traffic could get hectic. Both Miraflores and Barranco are the safest and best options to stay in Lima. They have the best hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, bars, etc., all easily accessible by walking distance.
Magdalena del Mar, now declared as the safest district in the whole city of Lima. The rank is as follow : 5° Jesus Maria, 4° Miraflores, 3° San Borja , 2° San Isidro 1° Magdalena del Mar. Barranco is pretty safe too, but is not in the top 5 . . .
I fully enjoyed my time in Lima!
Thank you for watching!
I've always been curious about Peru, now I feel like I have to put it on the list.
I think that's a good plan!
I’m a born and raised Peruvian, now living in the US. Sir, I want to thank you for what might be one of the most complete, educative and well documented CZcams videos about my city. Thank you for taking the time to understand the real history of Lima, its complexities, inequities and for capturing the spirit of Lima’s inhabitants. What a beautiful video!! I also love the name of your channel. You’re always welcome in Lima and Peru 🇵🇪❤
What a wonderful thing for you to say! I am honored that you feel that way.

Hello from Peru and many thanks for your video. We limeños are very humble people. We know we have one of the best cities in Latin America , but we prefer to hide it , because some people from other regions in Latin America will try to put Lima way down on the list. I appreciate your honesty and good quality videos. Lima was the main center of Viceroyalty that is why its colonial arquitecture is so wonderful. We take care a lot about our Parks because we love them. We are watering public gardens using tanker trucks, what has double value. The beauty is not free. Lima is becoming the new pretty girl in the neighbourhood. New big Airport City, New subway, etc. Even the shanty areas are made out of hard working class people with thousands and thousands of micro-enterpreneurs.
I agree with you on every point! Lima is awesome, but the ability to enjoy it will be enhanced so much when the subway is fully built!
Thank you for the spectacular comment!
Great Video Richard! Where are you heading now? Larco Museum is very interesting, I remember that erotic prehispanic collection, it was very unique. Hope you can make a future trip back to Peru to visit other places, its a wonderful country!
Thanks so much! Peru is definitely on my list for a return visit at some point. Right now, I am in Paraguay. In about a week, I'll head over to Bolivia.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Richard there is some turmoil going on in Bolivia, there was an attempt to takeover the government

Wauuu Lima Perú Is a nice city !!! ❤
Lima is wonderful! One of the best places that I have visited in my travels.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
Thank you for the honest view showcasing a little bit of everything. As you probably realized, the contrasts between neighborhoods like Villa el Salvador and Miraflores are part of Lima's everyday life full of inequality and unfortunate situations. Overall, it looks like you had a safe and pleasant stay. As I tell people abroad: it's great for visiting, but no so much for being born and raised. Social mobility is nearly impossible across generations, but working class Peruvians struggle very hard to break through and improve their quality of life. You are very welcome whenever you feel like visiting again. Perhaps, you can try getting a place in more "average" places like Surquillo (next to Miraflores) or Lince (next to San Isidro) so you get a better sense of how everyday life is for the middle class. Thanks again!
I certainly appreciate the comments. I love hearing from people who know the areas that I visit, better than I ever will. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful message that will ultimately help those who watch the video and check out what other people have said about it.
It depends on where you were born and raised, like in any city. I was born and raised here in Lima and I LOVE IT. And I travel everywhere, but would never move abroad. ❤

Lima is like South of California with a touch of Spanish empire and Egypt, (and yeah, there are slums too, I mean, it is still Latin America you know?)

Those are such nice things for you to say! I truly enjoyed your country and your city. I hope to return some day!
Lima, the City of Kings, was the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, one of the largest, richest and most powerful Viceroyalties of Overseas Spain, therefore Lima was the most important city of the Viceroyalty where political power was concentrated. economic and military, in addition to ecclesiastical and commercial power. Lima was the beloved city of the Spanish Empire and was as modern as Madrid. Viceregal Lima not only enjoyed a high cultural level, it also enjoyed an exacerbated wealth and luxury reflected in the beautiful architecture of its palaces, churches, cathedrals, museums, universities and mansions of European Renaissance style,... fused with the Inca contribution.
Thank you for the historic perspective!
This’s an excellent video, very realist without extremes and stereotypes
Congratulations!

I can confirm that Lima is one fabulous place: ancient history and ruins within the city limts, wonderful historic architecture, a chaotic urban vibe that makes you happy to be alive, a local culinary culture that is quite simply world class and just plain delicious ('suspiro de limeña' is one of the finest desserts I have ever eaten), the best anthropology museum in South America and some of the friendliest people anywhere. Also, the shopping for indigenous artisanal crafts is extraordinarily diverse, especially at a fantastic shop/gallery called Dédalo, in Barranco. ❤❤

Fantastic video! I’m glad you enjoyed my city and my hood (Miraflores) You captured their magic pretty well.
Missing all those places each day a bit more here in far Australia.
Thank you! I expected Lima to be a nice city, but I was completely blown away by the beauty and what it had to offer!
Hello Richard. Lima is a discovering . The city has been improving on every aspect. In the 80's and 90's due to Shining Path and MRTA was an abandoned place. But after 2k year , is been improving its beauty . Also abundance of recycled water for watering parks and gardens. Top knotch restaurants + milions of soles invested in restauration of squares , plazas, colonial streets, etc. Besides this, it is a cheap city and safer than most of others cities in Latin America. Peru has one of the lowest homicide rate as 6 per 100k people, data from 2023.
I was totally enthralled with Lima. I'm sure at this point, that it will only continue to get better and better each year!
I am so happy that you thought enough to leave a comment. Thank you so much!

Lima is beautiful and Peru among the cheapest and safest countries in L.America.
After spending just a short period of time there, i would have to agree!
Lima is not only beautiful but a very complex city, is a enormous city (over 10 million people) and has a very unpleasant side too (and is the biggest part of it if you dont know it already)

Informative, but it would do you well to work on your Spanish pronunciation. Also, the music is salsa which has little to do with Peru. Save it for Puerto Rico video.
I know that I certainly struggle with pronunciation, in many of the places to which I travel.
It was still a great video. I'm just a picky sob who likes languages. Look forward to seeing your other videos. Stay safe.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome So called "musica criolla" is the real peruvian music that represents Lima culture. You could make a search on youtube. Its thousands times better than salsa which (as the other dude said, has nothing to do with peru). Your spanish pronunciation is ok for a foreigner and its pretty understandable for us locals, but it would be nice if you improve it a lil.
I have to use music that I have licensed and that can be a little limiting. I try to get as close as I can, but sometimes I miss the mark.

Now at the ice cream shop there are uniquely Peruvian flavors… no mention of any of those flavors
Santiago, Buenos aires, Rio are so much better
It is not about "better", each country has their own charm.
But, food in Perú is the best!.
In your opinion, what is or could be the best city in North America?
Wow! That is a great question!
New York has something for everyone and is an amazing place. One place that I hope to go in the next couple of years is Quebec City. I have heard it is spectacular. I have only spent a few minutes in Mexico City, but I would love to spend more time there, as it seem phenomenal.
Thanx for the quick reply. I have been around, traveled to several cities in different countries. As far as North America goes…
I have at the very least visited, if I can remember: Monterrey, Laredo, Nuevo Laredo, Mexico City, San Diego, Tijuana, Washington DC, New York, Houston, Miami (?), New Orleans, San Francisco and San Antonio.
In my humble opinion, Mexico City is hands down the bomb, the very best city in all North America, possibly even the world. I currently live and work there. 2nd? Probably either San Francisco OR New Orleans
I forgot about Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia…OMG. Totally worth visiting or living in
Would going to only Lima for Peru be worth it and not going to Machu puchu?
I chose not to go to Machu Picchu, but many people will choose to do so. If I decide to go to Machu Picchu one day, I will most likely go and spend a month in Cusco and explore the entire area.
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Thank you so much, this is so helpful! In your opinion, if I don’t have a lot of money (budget) and don’t have a lot of time to travel, how many days do you think that a person should spend time in Lima?
It is difficult for me to say, since I travel slowly and I am typically in one place for around a month. My guess though, is that you could have a really good experience in Lima by spending anywhere from four to seven days.
I hope that is helpful to you!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome thank you again! Just another question, what hotel that is inexpensive and nice neighborhood do you recommend staying?
I would suggest either Miraflores or Barranco, in terms of the neighborhoods. I can't recommend a specific hotel, since I always stay in Airbnb accommodations. Your best bet is to search for hotels on Booking.com. Choose a place with a "9" or higher rating and make sure to read all of the reviews.
In Miraflores and Barranco, the closer to the coast, the better.
3:31 yeah, I’m not gonna do this shit again…
Don,t be stupid .
I thought it was a giant Shantytown. Do they respect traffic laws, bikers, pedestrians? That's a sign.
I only spent a short period of time in Villa El Salvador, if that's what you mean.
Lima is a great city, but what needs to improve are public transportation and more Jobs, good paying jobs. In overall..the best cities for Jobs, public system, infrastructure etc. cities in Brazil dominate Latin America (and compare to cities in the US) for quality of life.
Yes, public transportation needs to improve and there are far too many people being left behind, economically.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments!
That latin one is thefirst tower LATAM 500m
Most of the year a gloomy, traffic jammed, chaotic and crime afflicted city, it's not a place to live comfortably
As someone who was born and currently lives in Lima, I hardly disagree with the video 😂. The vast majority of people living here cannot access to all turistic areas all the time. They are located in a small fraction of Lima's territory. Throughout the city we don't have a lot of trees and parks. The traffic has been worse latelty. Many times I cover my ears because of the horns, it's too much noise 😓... We only have one train line, and Lima's major does not help at all...
not with all the pollution
Trafico de mrd aaaaaahhhh
Definitivamente es Lima ❤
Best city of SA? XD
Buenos Aires > bogota >>> lima
😂 the best city 😂
Ill comment then watch the video, points that should be addressed, lack of public transportation, traffic and thankfully decreased crime if I read the right sources, Lima still lacks behind due to being built for the elite class back in colonial times and not for the mass migration from the Andes during the late 20th century. It lacks green areas and that's something that should cover all the surrounding conos and give those people in need at least a pretty sight to look at, the favelas have their charm, the conos ...do not. More recreation parks, more security cameras around community areas, if the mayor which I believe has the potential to carry out these duties and implement changes to make the capital better.
lima its beautiful when you dont enter in "brown village"
Buenos Aires is much much better than Lima. Santiago an Río too
Soooooo ???? Who cares?
LIMA, THE CITY OF KINGS, HAS BEEN NAMED THE BEST "EUROPEAN CITY".....😅😅😅😅😅
lmao no. Santiago, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Curitiba and so on are much better cities
Hay ciudades mejores que Lima en sudamerica. Lima es sucia, carente de vegetación y parques públicos, tiene uno de los peores transportes públicos de America y el peor tráfico. ¿ en donde dejas a Santiago o Buenos Aires ?
Dry, gray, crowded, poor, contaminated & overly large with a few nice areas as exemptions.
Just go for part of the year and enjoy the best part which is really good!
It could be any city in Latin America.
Best city??? I live here and I wouldn’t call it that, I love my city but calling it the best is a huge stretch
Hahahahahaha. Nope.
