Old, Alone and Far From Home
Registrace 7. 09. 2011
Come along and travel the world with Richard Green. Retiring in the spring of 2023, I am embarking on full-time world travel. I'm going solo, but the idea here is not to focus on me so much. It's about the places and the people along the way.
The title Old, Alone and Far From Home might initially come across as a sad state of being. My mission is to show that it's just the opposite.

Miraflores: One of Lima, Peru's Top Neighborhoods
Lime, Peru contains over 40 districts, but most visitors concentrate on two of those neighborhoods, when deciding where to stay. This video features one of those neighborhoods, Miraflores. In addition to the shops, restaurants and bars that tourists always seek, Miraflores also contains surfing, ancient ruins and a majestic clifftop location and million dollar views of the Pacific Ocean.
Miraflores could easily be the best neighborhood in Lima!
Music provided by Epidemic Sound.
Having retired in 2023, I now travel full-time, seeing places all around the world. My idea for CZcams is to make the videos more about the places and people along the way, than about me. I hope that the experience for you is both entertaining and educational. Perhaps you will come away from my channel with ideas about places you would like to visit or be inspired to forge your own way.
I travel slowly, spending four or five weeks in each destination. Hopefully, that will allow me to go beyond the surface to find the essence of each location. By the end of 2024, I will have visited 14 countries and five of the seven continents. Come along for the journey!

Climbing the Rock of Guatapé: Perfect Day Trip from Medellin

Two hours from Medellin, Colombia by car or tour bus, Guatapé might just be the best choice for taking a day trip out of the city. I did just that during my month-long stay in the country. In addition to climbing 700 steps to get to the top of the Rock of Guatapé, I was able to check out the colorful town, take a boat out on the reservoir and enjoy some fantastic Colombian food. Comuna 13 is one of the top tourist destinations in the city of Medellin, Colombia. Its past, however, is troublesome, as it was once considered the most dangerous neighborhood in what was at that time the most dangerous city in the world. I will talk here about the past and the remarkable transformation that has completely changed the Comuna 13 part of town. Beyond that, I will compare the bus...
Medellin, Colombia: Quite a First Impression

It seems as though everyone has an opinion about Medellin, Colombia. Many times those opinions are based on news reports and what happened in the city in the past. I feel confident in saying that Medellin is a vastly different city than the one that was dominated by the drug cartels, back before 2000. There are still issues, of course, but I found the city to be comfortable, exciting and full o...

Did not see a drop of rain? Wait for the end of June and there on until Sep/Oct it rains cats and dogs.
I heard that the rainy season can be quite wet! Thank you for watching!
The last time I went to Homer was during "the virus of unknown origin:":. Restaurants couldn't get enough workers to stay open for a full schedule, and many were closed completely. The grocery store looked like it had been hit by a swarm of locusts, so I spend the three days living on cheese, crackers and smoked sausage, and one seafood meal on the Spit. I guess it was kind of my own fault. I didn't check before I went.
I'm sure seeing Homer in that light was completely different and almost surreal.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Yeah, I had been there several times over the years and always had a very enjoyable time.
Very nice place. PERU 🇵🇪 RULES!
I loved it! I'll have four more videos from there over the next month! Thank you for watching.
10:25, that is my neighborhood.
Why CNN news 🤣
I too, like the sounds of rocks knockin together. Really good vid 😊
That is so nice of you to say such kind words!
There is nothing American about San Miguel… depends on what you’re focusing on.
The views of the Pacific from the top of the cliffs are beautiful, but I think I would spend most of my time sitting on those rocky beaches listening to the rocks in the surf! Spectacular!
Yeah, the camera couldn't capture the sound adequately. It is so unique and strangely soothing! Miraflores is really special!
I was totally oblivious to Punta Arena. As a Guiness drinker I will check it out soon.
I didn't notice that they had Guinness, but they have all kinds of other good stuff! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and to add a comment!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome You said that they had a nice stout I believe… Close enough for me!
I live in Anchorage and get to Seward a couple times per year. I agree- Seward is better than Homer. But plenty of folks will argue with us both.
I have heard from plenty who swear by Homer. No mistake, it's a nice place, but I (we) prefer Seward. Thank you for watching!
This video would have much more balance if it showed you getting blacked out drunk in the salty dog and starting trouble with the locals
That could have been fun for all involved! I appreciate you watching and for the laugh.
I love your documentary-style production. Thanks for showcasing my hometown! Greetings from California.
Thank you so much! You have a beautiful hometown!
Beautiful 🤩 I’m going soon.
That's fantastic! You will have a blast!
Looks amazing, too bad they’re all liberal crazies.
yes, i absolutely agree...the video uploaded here is undoubtedly one of the best about athens i've seen so far. could easily be used as sorta video guide for a future trip
That is such a nice thing for you to say! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
Well done !
Thank you, so much! I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
My daughter has a Fellowship in Greece and recently, my wife and I went on a 2 week vacation to Greece and Italy. We spent 4 whole days in Athens and absolutely loved it. We spent two whole days in Santorini; two whole days in Florence; and two whole days in Rome. It was probably the best vacation we've had so far. I subscribe to the idea that one needs to spend at least a month in a country to get the essence of the history, culture and people. That is the goal when I retire, if possible. This channel will provide a lot of background and inspiration.
That sounds like a wonderful trip! I love spending an extended period of time in the places that I visit. I am very fortunate that I have the ability to stay that long. I appreciate your kind comments. It has always been my hope that this channel will help to inspire you and others!
You are wrong, change the title...
Thank you Richard for mentioning our craft beer bar Punta Arena in your excellent video about the city of Medellin. For us it was a pleasure to receive you and we hope to see you soon. Cheers!
The pleasure was all mine! I enjoyed every moment I spent at Punta Arena! You have a phenomenal place!
What a great video. The Old Palace of Justice looks like an amazing place to explore. I really enjoyed seeing all the bright colors throughout the video. Makes me want to come spend some time in the area. Thanks for sharing.
I was so impressed with Medellin! I would recommend it for anyone who wants an international experience, not far from the U.S.
Grear tour!
I appreciate that! It was a fun day.

The Omonia neighborhood, up until the financial crisis of 2010-2011, used to be an area with many shops and micro malls, the "Stoa" as we call them. During the financial crisis, many of the shops closed down, and the area started to be abandoned by the locals. Then immigrants began to arrive, along with drug addicts, because they could find cheap apartments for rent. After the end of the crisis, when tourism started to grow rapidly in Athens, the municipality of Athens began to plan the recreation of Omonia Square. We believe that in a few years from now, Omonia will be back on its feet again.
That seemed to be the case for me, that Omonia was heading in the right direction. It will take some time. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for changing our attitude about Columbia! Can an American drink the water there? Looking forward to Peru!
I'm glad to have had an impact! It is considered safe to drink the water in Medellin. I did and I never had a single problem. Peru is fantastic! I can't wait to get those videos on CZcams.
What a great overview of so many different areas of Medellin! This would be an amazing resource for anyone planning to visit the area.
Appreciate it! I certainly enjoyed a lot of the areas of Medellin. It was nice to go beyond the neighborhoods where most people go and stay during their visits!
Old, alone and far from home--that's exactly what I am. 😄 Wishing I could find paradise to live in somewhere, and a caring person to live with.

Can you tell me if there really was a bus from Vlore to Gjirokaster at 6:30 am? Thank you.
That was the case when I traveled the route. Schedules can change, however, so you'll have to check closer to the time that you want to make the trip.
Greece as we know it today was formed in 1831 thats why you will never see a map that says greece before then. Greece in latin means combination of countries which it is. The hellenic people down south have been there for a long time and know greece is a modern country as it stands today. But even athens is built by the romans. Beautiful place

I am surprised by the quality of your videos. I watched your first video in Alaska...then I entered your channel and browsed it. Should I subscribe or not? I watched this video and I liked it very much...👌🏻💯 You present the city in a really beautiful and nice way...😃 Of course, I subscribed to the channel To follow your trips and interesting views... If you please have time to answer me, I will be grateful to you The food you ate looks like a sandwich. What is it made of? I was surprised by its black colour🍩🍪 My next question: Is visiting Mexico dangerous? I was in America studying in Fresno, California in 1998. The idea was that Mexico was a very dangerous country. Is this true or specific areas? Thank you. I wish you well, a long life, and good health💐🇸🇦
Thank you for watching and for your very thoughtful comments! The food that I was eating in all of those locations were gorditas. Those are cakes made of corn and then filled with any number of ingredients, from cheese, to beef, to pork. The black color is because in Bernal, they typically use blue corn for the cakes. There are absolutely some places in Mexico that are not safe for travel. I went to towns in the Central Highlands (Queretaro, Bernal, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato) and felt safe in all of them. There are apparently still places in those same states that can be dangerous. I hope this was helpful for you!

Nice area. Is it a liberal stronghold ?
I have no idea. I was there for three days and enjoyed the natural beauty. Didn't care about the politics of those who live there.
Great video I'm actually heading there in July and looking foward to that chocolate place.
Thank you! Actually there are several locations of the chocolate place, so you might find one closer to where you are staying than the one that I visited. I so appreciate you watching!

You are exactly right! I will feature Conquistadores in my video that comes out this Sunday. It features my impressions of a number of Medellin neighborhoods.
So pretty
It is really a special place!
Very nice video. I run that trail twice a week. You did an amazing job capturing the beauty of it.
Thank you so much! I wish there had been more time to spend on the trail. I was hoping to do the entire length, but got rained out on that day. Thank you for watching!
How cool that you got to pick beans yourself and not just observe! Looks like a great tour!
That plus two cups of coffee and watching the process from bean to cup unfolds made for a marvelous day!
When I was a kid growing up in Anchorage, 1953 to 1966, I remember thinking that having a house on the cliffs above Kachemak Bay would be the most beautiful place in the world to settle down and not go anywhere else. I got to know an old miner who lived on the cliffs, Bruno Agostino. He lived and died alone in a one room cabin and gave his property to the Catholic Church when he passed away. I've never been back to Homer since the 60's and now it's probably too late unless my health takes a new turn, but thinking about it is fun thanks to the internet. Boy, Seldovia sure looks all "cleaned up" from when I worked over there on the Flying Shark and in canneries. It's barely recognizable from what it looked like back when it was a very busy port.
It is great to hear from people who are familiar with the places I feature in my little videos. Thank you for watching!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Is Bruno Agostino's name posted anywhere about the town? He owned a long stretch of the cliff section as one comes into Homer from the north. An easy walk from his cabin to the center of town. Surely the Catholic church has turned all that empty real estate into money by now. I wouldn't be surprised to learn It's become the most expensive real estate in Homer. Bruno was well known all over Alaska for the mining claims he'd developed. Immigrant from Italy. Graduated from Colorado School of Mines turn of last century. Came to Alaska and spent his long life prospecting and developing claims. Famous old guy. Surely somebody around there must know the name. If he were alive today, with what he owned when he died, today he would be Alaska's richest resident. Instead, the Catholics are probably the state's richest church. At least his name should be around there somewhere. Historical Society if there is one in Homer.
I never saw any mention of Mr. Agostino when I was in Homer. I also did a quick search over Google and found just a very few mentions of him and Homer on the internet. I am sorry that I couldn't provide a more satisfactory answer.

Another great video Richard, really cool to see the process for coffee on a small farm level.
Thank you! That was such a fun day!
Why is it important to preserve tall grass prairie remnants?
I am no expert, but I think it should be preserved simply for the fact that so much of the heartland was once that type of landscape. It would be a shame, in my opinion, if we couldn't at least see an example of what the terrain once looked like.
In which month did you travel, because my husband and I are planning on traveling this coming December
I arrived there the day after Christmas and stayed through the month of January. Thank you for watching and for the question.
@oldaloneandfarfromhome thank you for answering us. How was the weather during your stay? We are planning to visit on December 2nd to Christmas 🎄
It was cool, but not really cold. High temperatures were mainly in the 60s with some days reaching the 70s. (Fahrenheit, of course.) It actually rained a bit more than I thought it would.
Athens is a big shithole..the ugliest city in Europe.Besides Acropolis and the surrounding area of it, which is not great either but comparing with the rest of the city is good , all the rest of the city is miserable, dirty, dark, with narrow sidewalks and fulky neglected by the town authorities. No parks, no trees, only cars, smog and noise
Clearly the lack of people in these shots mean the footage was shot before 8 Am. Try to cross a street or walk St. George St. on a Saturday at noon ! You'll be trampled. BTW can't find a parking space for love or money !
I'm certain there are plenty of times when that is the case. It was February when I went, in the middle of the week. As you could see the crowds were non-existent then.
