    The MGB became the archetypal British sports car during its 18 year life - evolving from its chrome bumper roadster origins to include the GT hatchback, six-pot MGC and even the GT V8, before eventually gaining rubber bumpers in later life, the MGB was a smash hit. The simple maintenance, comfortable ride, fun driving experience, stylish looks, strong parts and club support and affordable pricing have made it the definitive classic car in Britain and a great choice even 60 years on! Former MG Car Club employee Jeff tells you all you need to know when buying one...

    I have two B roadsters; a '64 and a '77. They're both brilliant in different ways and I think they're both nice for different reasons.

      I sold my 64 two years ago and now have a 63..my 30th Brit car since 1965.
      The best Bs are still the 62,63, and 64.

    Over time I have had 4 B's (inc a pull handle) 2 Midgets and a '59 A. The main problem is rust, as a kid I remember seeing them being stored outside befor painting, they were rusty before the first buyer had driven them. IMHO the best thing to do is buy a US West Coast one, my A was and there was next to no rust when I striped it down for a bare metal respray

    Why did they have two 6 volt batteries? I presume they were in series so why not a single 12 volt ?There must be more to it.

    • @hughmagee6862
      @hughmagee6862 Před rokem +2

      I recall hearing that it was because BMC / British Leyland used to use 6 volt electrical systems in their cars, and when they switched to 12 volt systems they still had a lot of 6 volt batteries left over. So they connected two 6 volt batteries in a series to create 12 volts. Just something I heard so it may or may not be right

    Even if you have found the best of the MGB's , My advice is walk away and find a Sunbeam Alpine . Better in every way possible that the MG is . Better engineered , modern non cartsprung suspension , all synchro gearbox from 1964 onward , far superior hood arrangements , decent 4 seat for adults , unique twin fuel tanks giving cavernous boot space , micro cell seating and myriad drivers comfort positions . The MG is a quaint old cartsprung heap compared to the Alpine .

      But the alpine has a separate chassis so it isn’t as ridged as the MGB and the alpine has a steering box so i can’t imagine the steering feels anywhere near as nice as the MGBs does.

    Tossed the engine
    Install a GM Corvette engine

    MG never made an MGB "roadster", they made the Tourer and the GT.
