  • Let's face it, classic cars look beautiful but aren't normally great to drive, aren't that fast and let's not talk about going around corners and stopping. However, The MG Abingdon Edition by Frontline Developments has a modern engine, big brakes and new suspension...and it's AWESOME !

I am so old that I remember them as new. What a hugely different world of cars it was then. Your report prompted lots of thoughts. Mostly two for just now. Quality and reliability were major issues with such a lot of cars. Japan transformed both, then Germany caught up. We never did really. The second was simplicity. Your demonstration MG game me a halcyon vision of how things might have been. A beautifully crafted and built car with its focus on driving pleasure. Engineering first and the rest second. It's nice to dream. Loved the review.

I too remember when they were new. I had one (two actually). Dad had a Healey 100-6. Lots more. (We were a racing family.) I still prefer a restored original, with an 1800 cc carbureted engine and old-school 4-speed tranny. LBC's were not built for speed, there's a much deeper purpose. Love mine.

Fantastic review, particularly of how things could have been. I’m a Porsche guy, but have always said the reason most of us drive sports cars is because of the British cars of the ‘60s. I still remember borrowing my friend’s Triumph TR-4 and driving it to the New Jersey shore via the back roads........it was just exhilarating! That actually led me to motorcycles and eventually Porsches as my daily drivers for the past 40+ years. Thanks for the wonderful memories that your video brought to mind.

My old MGB Mk2 was great - but here I am 50 years later in a Peugeot RCZ - just fabulous, brings back great memories... Hope they sell those Super MGB's down under in Australia ... I might just buy one ... Ed
Ps - he looks a bit stressed in that open cabin - as stressed as I was when I tried to drive from Melbourne to Sydney Australia at night in one go ... I made it about halfway then the cold forced me to put the rag top up ... Memories Memories ...

I absolutely love your enthusiasm and big wide grin for the MGB Roadster - my old 1975 one in Green, I had as a 22 year old and bought for £850, was still on the road until 2006 (I’m 56 now) Now on a SORN, no doubt sitting in some barn somewhere, waiting for me to win the lottery and rescue it, and the youthful fun I had in it until I sold it to buy expedition gear to go representing England on Operation Raleigh in 1987. Great memories I’d love to realise again someday in LAO55P !

When I started watching this, I thought it was just another CZcams 'showoff my car chops' video, but after a few minutes I was hooked on the professional video and narrator work, very top level work. and of course the beautiful car seems to be a very well sorted vehicle, a sublime classic to be driven as a sports car should be. Wow then he turns into Stewart, the video captures the drive extremely well and ....if there ever was a sports car commercial made that really showed the 'sports' in driving, this is it.

Don't get me wrong. I love English cars. They had character, heart personality and even soul. It was just reliability issues, build quality being threatened from advanced scalable robotics and mass production that eclipsed them. Management and labor issues further exacerbated this. They had character and personality and always will. its good to see these being revived by dedicated British craftsman. Kudos to you.

Actually a proper BG would be the “B” or MGCcoupe. I think that 300 bop is a bit much and somewhere about 250 might be more fun especially with a proper 6 speed gearbox. The C model with the 6 cylinder is already a great car but a proper twin cam, cross flow engine with (3) 48 IDA’s would be a killer A 3 liter engine would be great. Lower power makes it more fun rowing the gears. I have no room to talk. I just finished and sold my most recent restoration, an 2002 AUDI A4 3.0 Quattro chipped and tuned to 280 rear wheel HP. I told my wife I need to feed my “mid-life crisis”. She told me that since she’s known me sometimes 50 years ago when I was a young and dashing Marine Corps Captain and an F4 Phantom fighter pilot with 3 tours in Vietnam during the mid 60’s and completely insane, LOL, that it was about time I ended my “mid-life crisis” of 50 years. I told her just one more. She said OK. So this last one will be a tossup between an MGC GT or an 1973, 454 4-speed Chevrolet Corvette. Actually I’m leaning towards the MGC GT. With the Corvette as a kicker.

Stock engine, the 1974 MGB was 79 HP. Unless you have diddled with a cam, ported head, increased compression, etc you have 79 HP.. My 1964 is stove stock and has the original 3 main engine in top condition ... 150 lbs compression straight across , properly tuned, still has its original 98 HP. Fast, fun, cheap. Agreed, increased HP is not a necessity. While the Abingdon is impressive, but defeats the purpose of the original B. Go buy a new MIATA. Better built than the Abingdon, at least the body panels fit, and considerably less money and a better exhaust note. Far more reasons to buy the MIATA if considering an Abingdon such as , modern SAFETY. I'll reserve comments on the boring, pretentious, contradictory video.

@@melindamanthey2757 The stock engine in 3 and 5 main bearing is around 95BHP and only US spec cars were downtuned in the 70s.
You've got 150 Newton Meters, not lbs which is 110.
The car in the video is £100k including VAT, which is around $130k not $100k.
If you utilising the power of a 300+bhp per tonne car and hit a lamp post, the air bags in an MX5 won't save you.
Don't think you can compare the panel fit of an original MG, with what is turned out in this video.
Most remaining cars by now, in UK at least, are likely built on Heritage body shells, not the mass produced, strike ridden BMC quality.

Loved this one Pete. The closest I ever got to actually driving an MG back in the day (yes they were still on sale then) was when I owned a Morris Marina 1.8 TC that has the same engine. But having seen some of the old MG and Triumph sports cars in recent years, the first thing that strikes is how small these things are compared with the lumps we drive around in these days.

Back in the day I owned two roadsters (not at the same time) and enjoyed both of them. Sure they were slow by today’s standards and wouldn’t be relatable to anything we know today but that wasn’t the point. Back then they were quick enough to have some fun in without being a complete hooligan and their natural dynamic limitations meant they were well balanced for their self imposed limitations. Unfortunately like almost all cars they also rusted away at a terrifying rate and keeping pace with body rot was far more of a concern than worrying about wanting a few more horsepower. We should remember the old MOT test was found necessary because so many vehicles were no longer structurally safe by the time they were just three years old!! The mechanicals would long outlast the bodywork which is why so many were scrapped. Today we don’t even think about looking for rust far less structural failures until much later in a cars life.
This latter day rendition of the “B” looks fantastic. All of the nostalgia but non of the old drawbacks. Great review as always.!

I have that same pleasure when I drive my 1961 cooper S replica. For the money, if you value everything you so well described, it is money well spent.
