I dunno, it's not stupid proof enough for me. Most accidents on elevators and escalators happen by someone doing something real stupid, often while inebriated and maintenance workers. I knew a guy who lost an arm and most fingers on the other hand as an elevator repair guy. Apparently, the instinct is to use your other hand to pull the stuck one out. He nearly lost both of them. However, statistically, it's about 35 people who die from escalators a year; say half that on elevators. But of course, you never hear about people afraid of cars and those kill 35 THOUSAND a year...
