    That’s actually very impressive for a car with this much power. I checked out this video because I’m car shopping for something somewhat sporty for around 30k and all the other cars Ive been looking at get 26mph tops. I really like the new brz and gr86 but the gti is more practical, faster, and apparently it has WAY better fuel economy

  • @luc7976
    @luc7976 Před 3 lety +7

    It's not allowed to overtake on the slower lane typically in Europe so would make sense that logic is showing here. Note though several states have the rule 'Keep right except when passing'. Overtaking is still allowed, but I can see for VW to play it safe and keep same system.

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 Před rokem

      This rule is HARSHLY enforced on the autobahns. The German highway patrol WILL mow you down if you try to pass on the right. It is very freaking dangerous because you could force a car to the left lane and that's where the speed demons go. I have driven an Audi A6 at 90 mph and seen Porsches and RUFs (MEGApowerful aftermarket 993s) pass me at 150 mph. You will NOT see them coming. They just zip past you faster than you can catch them in the mirror.

  • @largol33t1
    @largol33t1 Před rokem +1

    In the last two months with my MKVII GTI, I drove over 850 miles in mostly stop and go driving and very very few highway miles. I averaged about 27-30 miles per gallon with a 6 speed manual. I'm hanging on to this car. I feel sorry for those trying to ditch their V8 SUVs and finding out the trade in value is dropping like a rock right now. It's worth getting a GTI even if you have a lead foot. With very hard driving, average economy only drops about 3-4 miles per gallon.
    Note: when I drive, I use the transmission to brake by downshifting and letting the car decelerate if out on empty roads at night while rolling up to a red light. So your mileage might be 1 mpg worse than mine.

  • @mkygod
    @mkygod Před 2 lety +1

    Great numbers. My Mk7 GTI gets the same mpg on the highway going at around 70mph average over 30 miles ( no cruise control)

    Thanks for the fuel economy info! Interesting to see this one having the ACC issue. Though it’s probably better than what my 2017 Acura has. LKA ping pongs everywhere and loses road markings at seemingly random times 🤦🏻

    I’m digging the redesign, evolution here as usual. VW should have stuck with conventional buttons instead of silly capacitive touch thingamabobs on the steering wheel. That is quite a bit of drone though, yikes. Great video, once again!

    What would be your pick for a driver that does a lot of long highway commutes, but still likes a peppy car. This, or the Mazda 3 Turbo? Does one handle road noise significantly better, does one have a significantly better audio system? Obviously I know the transmission and handling in the GTI is a little more sport tuned.

    • @DailyMotor
      @DailyMotor  Před 2 lety +1

      I would take the Mazda 3. Much nicer interior. GTI would be better to throw around a twisty back road, but the 3 is still fun enough.

  • @user-sr5qx3wo6g
    @user-sr5qx3wo6g Před 2 lety +1

    Well yes, for eg. In Germany, it’s illegal to overtake somebody on the right :) That why the ACC is acting like that

    • @DailyMotor
      @DailyMotor  Před 2 lety

      I thought it was illegal to be *overtaken* on the right. What do you do if someone is sitting in the left lane at 5 kph under the limit? Just sit there and hope they get over?

    • @user-sr5qx3wo6g
      @user-sr5qx3wo6g Před 2 lety +1

      @@DailyMotor Hey 👋 thank you for responding to my comment . So in Germany the ,,Autobahn,, functions like that : the outer right lane is where the slowest cars and LKWs ( Lastkraftwagen = Trucks ) Drive. Then there’s the middle lane where the cars drive a bit faster. And then there’s the ,, fast lane,, ( not the official name ) where all the fast cars drive. In this lane nobody drives under the speed limit. Some drive like 5-10 km/h (3-6mph) over the speed limit if there’s one. And as I said you’re not allowed to overtake on the right. If you have any more questions, tell me :)

    • @user-sr5qx3wo6g
      @user-sr5qx3wo6g Před 2 lety +1

      @@DailyMotor but sometimes there is a so called ,, Elefantenrennen,, . What I mean by that is when a truck overtakes a slower truck on the left ( eg. middle lane - 3 line highway). There is a rule that trucks must overtake other trucks in less that 45 seconds or there’s a 80€ (93$) fine. And there are unmarked officers ( but not many ) on the road like in the USA.

  • @alexp6409

    Toward the end of the highway segment it looked like RPMs would dip well below 2k and then bounce back up, while the speed was staying constant...was the car hunting between gears?

    • @DailyMotor
      @DailyMotor  Před 3 lety

      I think it has a 'sail' type feature where it drops down to idle in order to save fuel when you let off the throttle. This might be unique to the Euro car.

    Our 2020 GLI will deliver these types of numbers. The VW 2.0 always over delivers on the highway compare to something like the Ford Ecoboosts. The only annoying thing is the trip computer always over estimates when it doesn’t need to given how good the numbers are. Oh lordy and VW is going buttonless with all the haptic stuff. What are they thinking.
