    Hello guys, I have not watched one of your videos for about a year… this was a lovely format and pace for weekend coffee.
    Off the cuff on Aalto’s hall, I think that was a master plan in his office with some strange budget, scope and timings issues. From memory the office was engaged for the master plan, then with short notice given a handful of buildings to design, then had one or two removed from the firms scope… the. With the hall I believe (along the lines of) that it had been given approval at a later design stage and then had a large budget reduction and a short timeframe to turn around CD’s.
    Not the ingredients for a firms finest work.

    A bit of a sideline, but as you picked the museums Amos Rex and Kiasma, one should also acknowledge the third corner of the small museum triangle, Ateneum, diagonally across the street from the railway station. Desingned by Theodor Höijer and completed in1887 it is the National Gallery building, extended in 1991 by LPR ARK. Höijer is the #1 architect of the late 1800's in Finland and also the extension is quite nice. Maybe nothing unique compared to museum buildings of that time anywhere in Europe, but the collection is good and you are already there, it is between the station and the Academic bookstore.

  • @sampohonkala4195
    @sampohonkala4195 Před rokem +4

    When in Helsinki, you should visit a sauna and swim in the Baltic Sea. For architects, the proper place would either be Löyly by Avanto Architects or Lonna by OOPEAA. Other than that, if you walk as far as the marble office building by the sea by Aalto in Katajanokka, you might as well walk a few blocks further to the Jugend / Art Nouveau area with several buildings by Saarinen senior and the less known designers of that period - it is a very well preserved area built entirely in that single style. The island also has some bars, restaurants and cafes on the northern seafront, so you will survive the walk.

    • @Archimarathon
      @Archimarathon  Před rokem

      Yes we go to Löyly. But this episode is about Helsinki city centre

    • @sampohonkala4195
      @sampohonkala4195 Před rokem

      @@Archimarathon Ok, for someone that has been living in Katajanokka for over 30 years Löyly is in the city centre. Maybe the distance from Stockmann's is a bit too much, but the seafront is considered part of the centre a bit further than other directions. And maybe I have bias as I used to work with the architects a long time ago.

    I've been waiting for this video, and it did not disappoint. I have had a bit of an obsession with Finnish architecture following the presentation. There are parts of me that likes it as it was one of the first buildings I saw whilst disembarking the Silja ferry many years ago. There are some very beautiful proportions and elegant bits. But yes it’s placement I do find it troublesome.

    • @sampohonkala4195
      @sampohonkala4195 Před rokem +1

      @@Archimarathon The controversy in Finland is due to the fact that a rather fine building by Theodor Höijer was demolished to give space for the new office building. During that time, also the building next to it was supposed to be demolished and the lot built - the reason for no windows in the Aalto building on that side - but later the old coin factory was preserved and now the Aalto building stands a bit lonely. Other than that, I don't find the result troublesome. Of course more than 30 years living on that island makes me rather used to how the building is.

    Personal opinion: Aaltos are probably the most over rated Finnish architects/designers. Beautiful shapes and interesting spaces, but the functional aspect is just dog s**t so often. Its the same thing with the famous Aalto vase. Its a beautiful object, but you need an ungodly amount of flowers to fill it or the flowers will just stick all over the place.
