we just finished a city planning project at university and for some reason some of the groups chose really odd dimensions for the buildings, which can make the new city blocks seem much smaller or larger than they are. but our professor knew exactly how big the blocks are, because they are so used to that 1:500 scale. my feel for scale is still in development, but damn it's a powerful tool! also drawing to scale is so important for evaluating if an idea fits on a site

The London Bus is a nightmare during summer, so hot it makes you car sick; and all the windows are fully fogged up during winter. They had to redesign and change the back door because it kept injuring passengers. The bridge in Paddington breaks all the time. He had a horrible, misguided attempt on sustainability with a tree sculpture for the Queen's Jubilee. The new google HQ in Kings Cross is a concrete mastodon with a lot of fake, timber boarded concrete columns and solar shades that is just out of place and scale. He helped burn £43 million of public money with a massively failed bridge project. The historic Olympia is currently turned into a circus mall. And that's just in London... He did do an ok job with the Coal Drops, and there's some cool Angel's Wings sculpture used as vents for the Underground.

Personal opinion: Aaltos are probably the most over rated Finnish architects/designers. Beautiful shapes and interesting spaces, but the functional aspect is just dog s**t so often. Its the same thing with the famous Aalto vase. Its a beautiful object, but you need an ungodly amount of flowers to fill it or the flowers will just stick all over the place.

I have a mild obsession with sitting on a porch, or some other roofed open space, during a rainstorm (with distant thunder for atmosphere). This garden offers so many places that would be ideal to sit on a rainy afternoon, drinking tea and enjoying the serenity.

There are beautiful houses and there is This Beautiful House..... This is a singularly beautiful, architectural masterpiece of a house. It is so homy, cozy and unpretentious!!!

The Roman museum in Merida is spectacular. If anything though, its so stunning it almost detracts from the exhibits. I say 'almost' though, because it doesn't, but it internal scale and open galleries are perfect for the mosaic floors displayed vertically. I've never seen such incredible displays. Far, far too much to take it all in, in a single visit and literally all within stone's throw of the breathtakingly beautiful Teatro Romano and amphitheatre complex. Dont try to see Merida in a single day, or youll miss 90% of whats there to see. Luckily for me, its 50km from my home. Ive been dozens of times, but keep finding more every time. Weve already booked our plays for the 2024 Festival of Classical Theatre, held each summer in the 2000 seat Roman Theatre.

The 1893 ? Worlds Fair in Chicago had an Asian compound with tea house and gardens and was a big influence on young American designers and artists like FLW, Schindler, and many others. So Japanese influence was widespread. You’re in SoCal where earthquakes and land shifting can affect older buildings by tilting concrete.

BIIIGGG Japanese influence. I photographed El Pueblo in La Jolla right after he finished this project. People do not even know it is there. People from Japan and Europe know more about this than the neighbors.

if value management is a synonym for value engineering which is the term i’m familiar with, then you are ‘looking a gift horse in the mouth’ probably because what you think of as the ‘beating heart of your project’ is not valuable enough to be protected by everyone at all cost, probably because it’s about what it is rather than what it does, what it enables. ie, not the value it has but the value it produces. value meaning any or all of utility/use value, exchange value, economic value, price value, sign & symbol value, and total experiential value.

I worked for John in the 1980's. The story he tells was that he was asked to move home from Canada (with the entire firm of Aussies that were with him in Canada) to do Parliament House. The uproar that came once he was home caused the government to have to open the commision up to an international competition and make John the chairman of the selection committee. When they were reviewing the submissions to short list to the final five he immediately knew that Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp's design was what Australia needed and he picked that and four of the worst other entries so that the the final selection was virtually insured to the right one. John was an incredible guy... and 40+ years later I still credit him as having made an indelible impact on my career. I'd wanted to work for Glenn Murcutt in 1983, but he was a one man shop then and couldn't afford to take on a young American... at $600 US a month.

They didn’t actually sit on the floors, Schindler designed and built furniture see historic photos to confirm, It still exists, the museum that ownes the property has removed it, I guess, to protect it, should be reproduced and return it to the property. All the furniture was in the house when I first visited 50 years ago….! One of LA’s architecture treasures…!

I hope you guys visited the Neutra VDL house in LA while visiting. That little house has hidden delights everywhere. And goes on to show the masters (Neutra and his son Dion) at work.

Working my way through your back catalogue (and waching the hair un-grey as I go) and from this untrained but design and garden and space-loving person, you may not be the best in the world, or even Australia (what would I know?) but you are bloody good! This stands up so well as a suburban family home that makes wonderful use of the assets accumulated in the past (trees, screening, an established and serviced community) and sets the inhabitants up for a happy life in the future. The interior space is complex, interesting, but restful, and really thoughtful. It feels like it has so much more usable, purposeful space than a McMansion with none of the sprawl and no clear-felling and destruction in order to achieve it. Congratulations to the homeowners for having the courage (and budget) and to Andrew's firm.

I liked some of the visuals. You start out pointing repeatedly to the Golden Rondelle, their guest relations center, which was not designed by Wright. It was built for the 1964-65 NY World's Fair, and then redesigned by Taliesin Associated Architects when it was brought to Racine. You do not clarify that the Administration Building (and it is the Great Workroom, not the Great Room) and the Research Tower were two separate commissions. You may be the only ones who ever thought that the Great Workroom was a squat space. It soars! Mr. Johnson originally did not want Wright to do their research facility. The Tower was designed in 1943/44 and built in 1947-1950. As for the layout...the late Sam Johnson told me "Our four most successful products were hatched up in the Tower. Who is to say it was not the Frank Lloyd Wright influence?" (You can read more in my 2010 book about the Research Tower). You overdid the economic bit with some assumptions. Yes, some parts of the area have challenges, but many do not, including some homes which blocks away. The Johnsons have done untold things to benefit the community over the years. Actually the house is not in LA, but in the City of West Hollywood. At the time it was built, it was in an unincorporated area within Los Angeles County. I, too, lived nearby from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. It was being restored and was open for tours much of that time.

I believe one shouldn’t make a design more complex than it needs to be. It’s really important to think function over form. Simplicity is clearly the key. But this can be very hard for any architect to fully achieve.
