I think one of the many themes she portrays in this poem is how everyone thinks "you're lucky to have dodged a bullet" like the forest fire in Santa Cruz but in reality her forest is her grandmother's memories and health burning away. All the happiness and life they shared, their forest, starts to disappear so suddenly just like the forest burning in Santa Cruz
"My father watches from the bedside table, his mother and daughter strung together by tightrope hands, fingers that look like his own, and somewhere in California a place I once stood is burning." It's amazing how she can take these life experiences and make something so beautiful
this is my aspiration. to write this well. to perform this well. to connect to myself enough to know how to form words this well before they slip away. she's amazing.
I just got some maad shivers. every second Sarah was speaking my entire being was gripped by her words and wasn't released until all her emotions poured into me. I really felt this one. great work
I was staring in awe at the screen and the best that audience can do is clap like they are comotose? Come on people! She is laying her heart out there!
As a side note, I think Sarah Kay is a really inspiring poet. I've only recently gotten interested in poetry after my friend invited me out to one her her jams, found out about Sarah through TED and her stories really speak to me. It's not something a lot of my friends understand, but I like it.
Another beautiful poem by Sarah. I'm actually from Santa Cruz, CA and when she mentioned it I knew she would belong in an amazing place like that. The forest fire was terrible.

It's sort of weird to think that the fire she's talking about is the same one I watched on live tv for two and a half hours on one station consuming my house and everything I had as a kid
i lived in santa cruz while there where some really big fires and we had to evacuate but this was only about 15ish years ago amd the sky was also red i was in 4th grade and a kid told me that is was mean to say the sky was beautiful while ash fell from the sky
I just see that as foolish. You don't have to like her, you are free to have your own preferences. I doubt she's going to change to your liking any time soon, and you are just wasting your own time hoping that. To each their own I guess.
