Same, I’ll stop shopping there and cancel the card because I barely ever use Bestbuy, local or online. For me It’s pretty much exclusively used for media purchases. Everything else at Bestbuy is either more expensive, poor options, or not sold there.
I would do store pick up so i could try and convince my wife to buy me an oled. Going to have to change my tactics. Lol
I get that streaming is easy (we’re all guilty of it) but nothing beats actually owning the film/show and being able to put it on your shelf.

And nothing beats the quality of the image. I hate streaming because if you don't have good Internet, it's not a good experience, low picture quality and connection issues
Plus some 4K movies have the Dolby Atmos track or DTS:X on disc while the ones on streaming services lack such track! That's not a great deal!
I admit, i tend to watch my digital copy of a 4k I bought. But I love looking on my shelf to physical see it there and still visually better on disc than on streaming. Also it's good to have it incase of internet outages or movie studios editing film in the future.

The thing is man not everyone buys boutique and special edition. Some people like to browse the shelves and buy cheap Blu rays or 4ks. Not everyone has $40,$50,$60 + to dish out for a Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow box set. So this does suck for casual collectors, especially because I know a for a lot of people nostalgia is a big reason for collecting. Browsing the shelves takes them back. Now that’s not going to be possible.
yeah most boutique labels just sell weird nazi exploitation or like finnish dramas that no one has heard of lol. I'm mostly a fan of big Hollywood movies and not any kind of crazy special editions.
Spot on, the guys with the opinions like Jeff is cos they can live in a world of collecting nothing but D grade horror movies no one ever heard of. Rest of us will be missing out more and more with decisions like this.

You aren’t getting cheap blu rays at Best Buy as it is. Do you actually go there? I have one across the street and their selection might as well be nonexistent. I agree that we can’t just have online and there needs to be places people can go and browse, but Best Buy hasn’t been that place for years already.
@@EmberBlaine nailed it. This is a huge issue with places like Vinegar Syndrome. They are targeting a niche market within a niche market. VS primarily releases titles that are skipped over by Troma. Mainstream Hollywood for them is Road House, TCM2, Prophecy 1-3 or the Amityville franchise, lol. They're getting better, but collector's thinking one day you're gonna see VS or Arrow put out a Star Wars or Simpsons set from Disney are fooling themselves. BB & Target pulling out in '24 is NOT a good thing or a good sign of industry trends. If there was "real money" to be made, they wouldn't be bailing on the market entirely.
Thank god Walmart is getting into the steelbook game more. It baffling how Best buy is cutting off online to when their exclusive does sell out within minutes

Our Walmart physical media selection is worse than Target. Empty, disorganized shelves
Doesn't bother me that Best Buy pulls out. Haven't shopped from there in years. I refuse to buy digital because if someone makes an edit to a movie/show you're stuck with the edit. A friend of mine that uses Vudu was pissed when he wasn't allowed to watch certain Simpsons episodes after they were blocked for "offensive material" and he paid for them.
The problem is when physical media goes back to a niche market sold on boutique labels it will be too expensive for most collectors. If all movies are $35 or $40 Criterion discs, I won’t be collecting very much anymore. Just like I couldn’t afford laserdiscs.
Or... you just buy less and make it your favourites.
This is where I was as a laserdisc collector back in the day. I just bought my true favorites on disc. Other titles I got on VHS. I enjoy movies, the format is always secondary.
It is already happening. Look at Scream Factory and their 4k. 35+ for the release of an old movie is wild. 4k isn't new anymore.
Those expensive Criterion discs will be $20 on Amazon after a couple months though
@@GrayWolf5000 Companies like Shout/Scream Factory are different thats why they have different prices. Because they put more work into the physical media they cram them full of as many bonus features an audio commentaries as possible. Then the majority of the time they have reversible covers. Then they may include the movie on more then one disc. Like a Blu-ray an DVD or 4k an Blu-ray so they may cust a little more but you get way more. Then just the movie on one disk I mean for example John Carpenter's The Thing. From Shout /Scream Factory it has one disk for the movie an some audio commentaries an bonus features. Then a 2nd disk that has hours of bonus feature on it. Then for the Directors cuts of My Bloody Valentine the original movie. Along with the directors cut of Clive Barkers Nightbreed you get the movie on Blu-ray and on DVD. Not to mention the audio commentaries an bonus features. So for like 20 dollars you get your money's worth.
Unlike in many cases you pay 20 dollars just for a Blu-ray disk.
Then do you know much work goes into transferring those older movies into 4k. It's not as easy as you think they have to find a good version of those movies first. To copy it from an then get all the settings just right when they go to transfer it into 4k. Then you need specific equipment to make it 4k an that equipment is not cheap.
Still collecting till I'm dead. Love to own my own media . No one can tell me not watch something cause they didn't renew a streaming license. I decide what and when I watch

The issue is this is just one for now. But who knows where it leads. The other problem is that the more "niche" finding a physical copy becomes...the harder it is to find stuff you want because you then have to contend with scalpers even more than you do now.
The same people like this guy this guy in the video, that tell you, “its just once place”, dont understand that’s how it starts. It started with smaller name video rental stores, and then it was blockbuster. So, it’s likely that best buy is either leading the way, or they’re following a trend. Eventually we wont even be able to buy any physical media

@@kylexile87 That's kind of his point. When he says they are leading the way? He means that they are the first of what is likely many to drop physical. Target is going out as well. Walmart could very well follow suit. Yeah you have boutiques and such like Arrow Video. But the problem there is these smaller labels don't really have the same kind of distribution. The more niche something is? The easier it is for some asshole with a bot to scalp something.
Just look at music. Best Buy dropped music a long time ago. Walmart and Target's selection of music is a joke these days because everything is shifting to digital. People had i-tunes or MP3 players. Now you can carry multiple cds worth of music on your phone or use something like spotify.
There won't likely be a new format coming along. And not that it would matter if they did have a new format like 8k because once Best Buy, Target, etc. leave that market? They won't come back to it for a new format. 4k is likely the last format we see.

I get it if Best buy stops carrying movies but they used to be the go-to place to get movies not Walmart, Target or any of the other retail stores. It's just somewhat disappointing to see any retail store discontinue physical movies.
Same. Target selection is the worst at least Walmart sells old tv shows on dvd or blu ray, but their 4k selection is so basic. Bestbuy was where it at for sure. The second hand market is non-existent as well on marketplace. Where I live their is like only 1 main store that sold old physical media & even their selection of 4k's are of the least desirable movies. It's pretty much ebay or amazon these days, but mostly amazon.
Physical copies of blu ray movies are really good to bring everywhere when you have portable blu ray player at an airport or laundry mat.
@@legendaryTMNICO I guess, but that's a very niche situation. People have smartphones that they can stream movies or bought digitally from vudu. No is carrying ipods or cd players around either especially own a smartphone. If you watch nomads that travel a lot.. They're carrying a smartphone, a backpack, + an apple laptop with the bare essentials & live a very minimalistic lifestyle.
I feel like it’s a quality thing as well. Target had a small collection, but it was maintained. Walmart has a much wider collection but it’s maintained like shit. I used to enjoy going out on Tuesdays to scan the shelves at Best Buy and see what was released. Walmarts new release shelf is always barren. It takes them anywhere from 3-6 days after release date to even put the new titles on the shelves. Maybe some Walmarts are maintained well, but all of my local ones are trash. Having to rely on Walmart for in-store physical media is the most disheartening thing
It’s ridiculous how every time there’s a blow against physical media every content creator is saying what great times we live in.
Just compare total number of titles released on VHS, DVD and BD. Not to mention 4K.
Major studios discontinue publishing physical media in some countries like Sony in Germany.
At least you admit it’s a niche market. This means even less titles being released and higher prices due to smaller amount of sales.

all collectors on youtube are high on copium, they don't want to accept what's coming in the next 2 years, regarding physical media, dedicated players and even optical drives on consoles
Tell me about it. I have had 4 players die on me this year.
I'm tired of this as well, and I'm a collector with a large collection, and I don't want it to end sooner either but I feel like some of those guys with bigger followings who make $$$ off of covering this stuff have too much a conflict of interest to report on this stuff objectively and honestly. They want to save face for the industry no matter the reality because that's part of their livelihood. I'd value honesty more. Anyone who looks like total sales revenue the past 20+ years knows the real truth. Revenue will continue to go down as the years go by, it doesn't matter how many niche titles a few thousand of us are buying here and there every month, the amount of collectors continues to shrink. I know this won't last forever, I am just getting what I can as things are released, so I will have a robust collection even if this is all over in another 10-20 years.
@@MoviePalaceOfBlood I actually fixed my player just had to power cycle it. Walmart is actually the biggest physical media supporter I've seen.
They sold Vudu when I worked in their store. Comcast had Fandango now buy it. But I have been noticing an uptick of physical media in store and on site. Their are rumors Walmart wants to buy Gruv. I think Walmart saw the writing on the wall that digital is not profitable years again.
What's strange is my local Best Buy stores phased out all physical media a couple years ago and have recently brought it back, and pretty strongly. They've got a decent selection now, so I've been assuming they were only growing their movie section.
I mean Vinyl made a comeback. people thought vinyl died in the 2000s then it made a huge comeback

I really don’t want physical media to die ☹️ my collecting has slowed way down due to finances, rather than a desire to go digital (I HATE digital only). If eventually there is no more physical releases of any kind I’m going to be absolutely crushed. I appreciate your comforting words, but I’m still anxious about physical media’s future, and I don’t want to live in a future where movies and shows are digital only.

I don’t think physical media will disappear from online or thrift stores anytime soon, but I would be surprised if it didn’t vanish from most mainstream chain stores by 2030, if not sooner. In the case of Best Buy, it has been going downhill the longest. Physical media was still thriving in most stores ten years ago, but one has to go back twenty years to remember the golden age of Best Buy. My main concern is not about not being able to get physical media; it’s about losing an experience. I like perusing DVD aisles and holding physical copies in my hands. That is becoming a lost art.

I also miss that experience of doing the same thing looking for cds at record stores. The only thing that is lame with some physical media is there are people that are spoiled with the digital download that comes with the blu ray movies. I never like using some code to download movies.

Physical media has been dominated by online purchases for a decade now.
Yeah this is what I came here to say. Best Buy doesn’t do anything better than anybody anymore. I’ll use them as a price match for my local AV shop when I need a new TV. Laundry machines and kitchen appliances are better purchased at Home Depot or Lowe’s anyway.

Best Buy used to be good years ago but these days it ain’t worth it because they do not have anything that makes them unique

all I see at best buy is a half empty store. I buy blurays; steelbooks just yesterday bought the Halloween trilogy steelbook set and I didn't see any employees trying to help me ; in the old days ; their customer service was great now it doesn't even exist. they'll be gone soon. good riddance

I feel like this is a bigger deal than you say. Black Friday last year, Best Buy was the only place near me that had a good selection. It seems like Walmart is going to be the only place to go now. Hopefully, they expand.

@@jeanbethencourt1506 It's not a cope. Either your listening comprehension sucks, or you weren't really paying attention to what was said. No can deny the perfectly evident reality that more and more boutique physical media companies have been cropping up, especially in the last few years. Clearly this means that the physical media market is once again growing larger, and business people have taken notice and can smell blood (and money) in the water. There is a rising number of younger physical media collectors who are interested in collecting, and this is only going to grow considering the fact that people have started to wake up to the fact of the many disadvantages of streaming and relying on streaming companies.
The people who are making a big deal are people who spent too much time on social media and just like to be dramatic to get attention, and the types to say that sky is falling over every stupid little thing. And they also probably don't have a clue about how big retail companies make their money - and they don't make it from physical media sales. But boutique labels and other offerers do, and they know there is money to be made just like I mentioned above. Even companies like Wal-Mart and GRUV have clearly taken steps to capitalize because they also know the physical media market is alive and only growing. If you have any outside world observational skills at all, then you know Jeff was pretty much correct about everything he said, and that physical media isn't going anywhere - it's only becoming more popular.
I agree with you. It is a bigger deal. Last month it was Target that stop selling physical media and this guy said the same thing then that he is saying now. And now it's Best buy. I think that this guy is wishful thinking. But I hope he's right.
Unfortunately, though I enjoy this and other big, and small physical media based channels, some of them make too much $$$ off of doing this, receive lots of review copies, etc, and can't be fully objective, honest, or realistic in their coverage of what is, in reality, the continued decline of the physical media industry. They have too much stake in things.
I worked at Best Buy during college when their media department had a huge footprint in each store. The reason it was so large was the foot traffic it created in the store. Their metrics showed how often someone bundled their purchase with another non-media item. This was the most important. Their profit on a DVD was abysmal. Almost always a dollar or less. Selling physical movies was never a profit generator on its own. My guess would be the average consumer isn’t coming in to buy physical media and something else anymore and their metics show this. It’s sad, but this is likely why it’s being dissolved.

In the UK retailers don't sell DVD or Blu Ray players any more not even budget brands. Physical has been phased out in a shops for years now unless it's Marvel movies.
I’ll really miss the annual Black Friday deals. Best Buy always had the best ones. I would always come home with a nice little stack. The end of an era :(

No best buy is doing fine. They are a top 100 Fortune 500 company. They are not close to that. They almost did in 2003. But they are a very healthy company. Look it up.
No they're not on their way. Their sales of the things they actually make $$$ off of are fine. Blockbuster was completely reliant on physical media rental. Best Buy isn't. Blockbuster never sold phones or washing machines. Things everyone needs.

Best Buy may not have survived on physical media. But I don’t like the message it sends. When these things happen, a lot of times it is a domino effect. Not so much the fact they stopped carrying in stores. But the online side too.
FYI Jeff, where I am in the music industry, I get a lot of info early on physical media sales. Vinyl sales had another STELLAR year over year increase. One of the biggest since the resurgence started 20 years ago!
Collecting physical media has been a hobby of mine for quite some time; ever since the mid 1990's (LD's and DVD's). Today I get all of my Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays from Walmart. So far I've purchased 118 titles from them online.
Yeah, this makes me nervous…partially because as more and more titles go boutique, 4k discs are going to be $50-$60 a piece all day
all it takes is for the movie companies to push digital and stop offering physical. It's coming. Who knows when but it is.
as someone who used to be employed by best buy, they haven't cared about selling physical disk media of any kind for years, they would rather use that space for more appliances and home theater, it's been an afterthought for them a very long time.
That said, I think streaming rapidly changing will incentivize people to pick up physical more instead as films are less easy to access for cost cutting on those platforms

I prefer to buy in stores than online because like you say, the packaging can sometimes come in damaged. Also, I never know if I'm getting the slipcover.
My 4 local Best Buys would have 2 or 3 shelves of movies, completely filled up. Before they remove everything, I'm gonna have to make my last runs to Best Buy my best buys ever, pun intended.
Reminds me when they started removing those preorder discounts for Video games. Eventually every company stopped it

I went to Best Buy lately, they still have new movie releases for only 5-10 movies, because they still care about the impulse buy for 4K blu rays! But I do agree them phasing out standalone DVDs, no one is really buying them at full price anymore! Blu Rays should be the standard physical format for movies.
Yesterday we wanted to watch Troy with my girlfriend. I checked Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and SkyShowtime, only to find none of those had it. Today I picked it up on Blu-ray. Physical media will never be over.

Here in Brazil the physical media market already changed to online stores and we are preordering major catalog titles from small boutique labels. The problem is… day by day the average people forget more and more about physical media existence because it vanished from the shelves and them collectors are becoming less and less. I think that unfortunately the same will happen all over the world. The clock is ticking slower for USA and UK cause both are the larger markets…
In other words, I think we are doomed. It’s just a matter of time 😢

With Best Buy pulling out of physical media, the only place to buy movies within an hour of me is a boutique buy/sell/trade place and online.
The only reason I ever go to Best Buy is to shop for Blu-rays and 4K discs. I guess I won't be going there anymore after next year.
Right on, Jeff! Your video is a great service. Its not 2000 anymore. Best Buy has become a boring appliance store. Their business has shifted and it’s not going to cater to a collector’s market. But the great news is that the 4K/physical media market is thriving and I can barely keep up with all the new releases. The sky ain’t falling. Keep calm and buy movies people.

You're absolutely right, Jeff! But I'm still bummed because 1) I'm super picky about my slipcovers. 2) Walmart is gross and the employees don't care. 3) I've gotten movies online that look like they've been karate chopped into my mailbox. I'm sad, but you're right, HOW we purchase is changing but physical is still here.
Yeah, I NEVER buy slip-only releases from Walmart, unless I inspect it first. Why they put those stupid, pointless white WM stickers on all of them for no reason, I'll never understand. But recently I've picked up some killer Steel's there in GREAT condition like The Fast & The Furious 4K, Psycho 4K (OG Art), and the LionsGate Halloween sets, especially that BEAUTIFUL Leprechaun set that has to be seen in person to believe. The Gold & Black colors with Leprechaun are AMAZING!
Walking around in Best Buy browsing the movie sections to kill time was one of my absolute favorite pastimes. The experience is really starting to feel dead. I hate ordering online. Though that’s been the reality for a few years now.
ordering online is fine by me ,as long as they send me the physical one ,cuz yeah streaming is fine ,but when i compare the same 4k movie in disc vs stream ,the stream DOES look compressed ,the problem is most people want the easy way so we have go through that
I get what you're saying, but like... no. In some areas like mine where you don't have a bunch of localy owned media stores, Best Buy is probably your best bet for picking up new catalog releases, so hearing them announce that they're pulling the plug is really annoying for two reasons.
1. Buying in-store is WAY more convenient than buying online and it's way easier to get a replacement in case of defects when you compare to Amazon, for example.
2. Yes, Walmart exists, but their selection is abhorrent. At all the Walmarts around me, the home media section consists of new movies (Sometimes with no 4K option), DVDs that nobody wants, and those terrible Asylum-like movies.
Having a Best Buy near me meant that I knew I could get the movie I wanted in the highest quality, free of any packaging damage. If I buy online, there's the possibility of getting something I didn't pay for or that the packaging was blown to smithereens (which has happened to me with online orders multiple times).
Honestly I chuckled a little when you said go to Walmart instead. Walmart is the most unreliable store for physical media. Barnes and noble is so overpriced as well. Unless these other stores get their shit together, I don’t see myself buying my movies in store anymore which sucks because you never know if you’ll receive your movies damaged through the mail or if they’ll even send you a good copy with a slipcover

Barnes and noble is the worst place to go for buying physical copies. That place is only good for reading magazines or some books.
I’ll always miss just browsing in person. That was always the best. I don’t want to go on to Amazon and “look” for movies. I loved just being in a store and finding something interesting or taking a chance on something that caught my eye.
I remember going to Best Buy, every Tuesday, there would be a line at the door when they opened and all the new stuff would be out ready to be pillaged. These days, you go in on release day, can't find the movie, and no employee knows or cares what you're talking about. If you're lucky an employee will look it up on their phone and go to the back to get it for you, IF they even have it. They haven't cared about media for years.
Didn't even know they had DVDs but I still can't believe this. I got my first 4k at best buy. A couple of steel books there too. Hell no.
Yea DVDs still sale alot more then Blu-rays or 4k blu-rays. Alot of gen z are rediscovering DVDs again and there's plenty of people who don't know blu-ray and 4k blu-ray exist.
@dominicarroyo6269 I work registers and I've noticed DVDs selling more than Blu-rays and 4K. We even have a few more spots for them on shelves than Blu-rays and 4K.

Young collectors have no idea the sheer quantity of disks Best Buy used to stock in store twenty years ago. Aisles and aisles. I don't think physical media is dead, but it makes me very sad.
Appreciate the Orbit DVD shout outs, as a local to them. I think it is a big deal because not everyone has access to video stores so Best Buy are many people's go to outside of Walmart. Niche movie buying means even more expensive physical prices. Best Buy would sell physical media arguably cheaper than the typical video store, so if anything it's a shame that another option is being taken away but we'll be fine, for a little while.
Everyone forgets about the millions who don’t have adequate internet and streaming is not an option.

Buying online is cool, but its hard to beat just going in a store and seeing a nice collection of movies to look through and buy.
It's clear in Canada that this is well underway. I should have known better than to try and pick up a new release (Prey 4K) on release day at my local Best Buy. They were showing as " SOLD OUT " in all stores and online. A bigger concern for Canadians is the complete lack of availability of certain titles. I've not been able to find an online retailer even offering The Mist 4K, Matilda 4K or the re issue of Lawrence of Arabia 4k. Hoping to find a new online source like Gruv here in Canada if anyone can recommend .... thanks for keeping us informed.
Canada sucks. I'm in Canada and we get practically nothing for films, it's a joke. Futureshop was my go to place back in the day, aisles full. Best buy here went down the drain and i've been absolutely shocked at the selection people get in the US. Our online store too is trash, they have nothing. I've had to use Walmart, Amazon (rarely) and online stores for films. What people in the US will be going through in 2024, we have been already adjusted to the change for the past few years of where we get our entertainment from. Best Buy not getting exclusive stuff anymore might be a good thing (accessibility) wise. I expect more stock and we'll actually have a chance to buy something outside of ebay. DVD and blu ray is not a problem to walk into Walmart and buy, but newer releases will almost never get restocked so you have to be there when they roll out new releases. 4K's, i've noticed stock being extremely limited and you have to 95% of the time buy from Amazon for something not released from boutique. We definitely go through a bunch of hoops here in Canada for films, but figures/toys is even worse.
@@Perfect_Plex Amazon is my go to now to order movies but I usually wait for sales. Walmart isn't even that good anymore with mostly just new releases and the bargain bins are almost always DVDs now, probably all liquidated from another store. I did see the first Blade Runner there on Blu Ray in the bin last time for $5. Didn't buy it as I already have it on Blu Ray but I put it at the top standing up for any lucky person to find it
There's a couple dvd's i've been putting off buying and since best buy is having great prices right now (for obvious reasons), do you think the prices will get significantly lower after black friday, or is it too risky to wait that long? And does anyone know if best buy is going to stop selling dvds completely or are they just going to have a $1 movie bucket like walmart after they just stop putting in order requests?
I remember when it was first a niche..the prices were very expensive. Expect the prices to go up in the next few years.

I believe physical media still has a future. The bitrate is much higher than streaming services, and the covers are small works of art that have some collector value.
Here in Norway physical stores stopped selling physical media almost a decade ago, in the last 7 years I've only seen 1 store that sold DVDs/BluRays and they also stopped about 2 years ago now. You guys are lucky it lasted as long as it did in the states.
there are also only 2 online retailers here who sell physical media, and the prices range from same price as Amazon UK (where I get a lot of my stuff) to 3 times the price (a lot of steelbooks and such go for 70+ USD, and criterion releases go for 70-100 USD).
Best Buy not stocking movies is bad.
1) Less locations to find movies, harder to buy. Online only = shipping costs.
2) Less competition, so price drops won’t be as great as they are currently.
Not surprised. Sometimes my local best buy doesn't even get their own exclusives in. I've just been ordering the steelbooks online from best buy.

In store is one thing. But online sales too? Thats not good! You say one retailer pulling out but now its two major retailers target and best buy. Also Walmart, the biggest one is shrinking their inventory, next thing you know they'll be gone too. THEN we won't get more releases.

I worked at a chain record/video store in the early 90s and laserdiscs were the niche, but had a dedicated fan base, so I think you’re 100% on target and agree that until the majors stop producing disc, we don’t need to worry
Hopefully it’s not true but if it is true unfortunately that is the end of me collecting physical movies, i’m in New York City and I don’t have a Walmart anywhere is even remotely close to me, there are some targets that sell movies but they’re too far for me to consider going to. From what I looked into Best Buy has not confirmed it or said that this is some guys article hopefully it’s not true and if it is let’s hope Best Buy is reconsiders. (Best Buy‘s needs physical media to bring people in to the stores all the things you said about TVs and vacuums people do buy that but they buy those every couple years)

That would give me absolutely zero reasons to go to best buy.
Less product on the market is never good no matter how you look at it. We have to remember that we are collectors and already know about this stuff. If people don't see it in the stores, they aren't going to know about it unless they research it. It's just going to make it more and more niche. It's not the physical media I'm worried but the players. If you are dealing with a super niche product, where's the money in selling a player that someone is going to buy one time?
Why would you not be worried? Playstation is releasing games without actual physical releases online. Can’t even buy a physical copy. Every store like Best Buy and Target are stopping physical media. Once enough places stop buying the physical media and harder to get and prices drop more, they will stop selling physical media. They will stop making physical and they are making the full switch to digital. Why wouldn’t they? They control the market with digital. No one can resell or give for a lower price. Obviously the way its going is to full stream, all digital and all purchases from online. Soon no stores to even go to. Obviously it’s something to worry about. Physical media will skyrocket and no one will be able to get there hands on anything unless you pay big premiums

I have been a physical media collector since 1997. For me nothing is better than own your original disc.

Not sure if you have a video on this already but you should make a video going over different distribution companies, like the ones you mentioned here, and explain who they are, and what they offer. I never heard of any of the ones you mentioned. So I’m doing a lot of googling now.

Like many people, the main reason to GO to best buy is to get physical media.
The bigger issue is that their prices are out of control trying to get you to pay for their memberships. Talk to me was 30 dollars there and 24.99 everywhere else.
As a collector I'm trying to stay optimistic. But there's a reality that wasn't discussed.
We can talk about the retailers, the independent shops, labels, average customers, collectors etc...but one big piece of the pie that wasn't referenced (and maybe the biggest piece) is the manufacturers. You know the people that actually make the product. I have a hard time believing that when big retailers such as Target and Best Buy stop selling, the manufacturers aren't paying attention. They have to be from a cost perspective. The collectors market isn't big enough to keep the manufacturers functioning the way they do today. Less big retailers, less product needing to be made. This effects employees who work at these plants. Less work...more layoffs. More manufacturers going out of business. And the ones staying in business will drive up the costs for said product. Then you have to consider the disc makers too. The printshops as well.
And will studios continue to throw money to staff and/or contractors to work on media dedicated to a niche audience like collectors? Manufacturing is a huge piece of the pie.
As a vinyl collector...its a bit of the same. It died out due to cds then digital. Nearly all the pressing plants went out of business. As of recently more started opening up to keep up with the demand but the cost for a vinyl record now is in the $25-40 range. And this is after a two decade hiatus.
So while the Targets and Best Buys don't really effect the die hard collectors...it does effect the industry as a whole. Im pretty positive the studios are going to rethink the physical media aspect. Its only a matter of time before Barnes gets rid of movies. Some locations already have. Now if Walmart decides the same... what will be said then? Youre completely correct....Criterion, Shout Factory and all the rest of the labels are fantastic but its a niche audience.
I want to be hopeful but the world in which many of us live in with shelves of a physical media library is not very common. We are a rare breed these days. Something I'm proud of...but also very realistic about.
I guarantee, disc making plants will be closing. Manufacturers will be shutting down. Walmart and Amazon aren't going to keep them open. The few that will stay open is to gather the leftover work. But again, less customers=less work.
There's things on DVD that aren't on streaming apps and might never will be, so I hope DVDs stay around forever. It's also nice to own physical collections of your favorite entertainment.
You can also play DVD without an Internet connection.
What bothers me most about 4k steelbooks are the exorbitant prices of almost $40 and that there are always two discs included.
On the 4k the film and on the blu-ray film plus extras.
Wouldn't you cut costs if everything was on the 4k disc?
We live in a world where prices go up and you can afford less and less.

With Amazon's 5% back and Walmart's $5 DVD bin, I haven't shopped for a DVD/Blue Ray at Best Buy in several years.

yeah in Canada, the movie isles were taken down over a year ago and make room for more TVs to be displayed..
Ive noticed this in large cities like Calgary/Toronto and smaller cities too. In all cases, we just have a small kiosk in the front of the store with about 10-12 titles.
Very sad as we can only buy 4k at Sunrise Records and Walmart now.
When they started doing the super high MSRP on release date… like the 40.99 (but 31.99 with total tech bullshit) I knew the writing was on the wall. Goodbye forever Worst Buy
I remember in the late 80s early 90’s belonging to a VHS mail order club, I think it was Warne Brothers. Over the years I always found a way to get my hands on new physical media if I couldn’t couldn’t get it from a brick and mortar store .
UK collector here. Our brick and mortar stores have almost all gotten rid of physical media. The only places I can purchase are, HMV (specialist retailer music/movies), CEX (media and hardware trade/resell), ASDA (Supermarket, DVD and Blu-ray only). I'm already purchasing 90% online because 4K is not widely available in stores. Special editions are almost entirely exclusive to online retailers. Those Bestbuy exclusive steels will just appear at other retailers instead.
Very well said! Just recently returned my Blu-ray collection to the shelves in my living room. Just the quality alone was any eye opener to me. Yes streaming is convenient, but can’t argue that physical offers such a better visual fidelity, in my opinion.
Not just an opinion ,they are indeed crisper and sharper on disc because the file is not compressed!

It’s because of Best Buy and Barnes and Noble that I’ve avoided buying any 4K online. Looks like I’m finally gonna have to give in to Amazon. You just can’t beat the feeing of picking up and looking at cases before purchasing.
i'VE NOTICED THIS YEARS AGO! When Best Buy's original retail store Future Shop started decreasing their stock of CD's ,then when it became Best Buy the same thing happened to their stock of Blu ray, DVD's and 4K releases! The store I go to now doesn't even stock CD's any longer and it's floor display of product has slipped to only a couple of shelves when it used to have a whole section devoted to that!
I now mostly order from online stores and Amazon which actually has a great delivery record and saving's from it's Prime members! I guess this is the way ,that I will go forward with and I don't have a choice, but as long as I can still get my copies of the movies I love I'll be happy!
I used to go by one BB often, as I worked out near. Now, I live 12 miles different direction. My VW dealer/repair location is by that BB, had service went over,…such a small amount of media, and little that I wanted. I still have my physical BB card, for points. The last time I did use that card, that location, the clerk had “never” see a card before. “I’m 54 years, I have a bonus card.” I said
Last time bought the Jaws 2 Steelbook from Best Buy it arrived damaged! Have not bought a Steelbook from them since. Been getting them from Amazon. Don’t have to worry about it not being available like I would Best Buy!
Like others have said, Best Buy has been doing this for the last year or so. 1 of 2 of the locations I went to closed. And yes big ticket items may help best buy survive, but I only ever went into best buy to browse the physical media. I'm not someone who's buying a washer/dryer combo every few months.
I think Best Buy is slowly changing into some appliance/technology boutique.
This doesn't bother me since I tend to shop based on best deal and availability. As long as we keep buying physical it'll still be made available. If it all goes to online retailers only, just ship in boxes to lesser any possible damage.
This sucks for the steelbook collectors like myself, because BB has tons of exclusive steelbooks & have even been collaborating with Scream Factory lately. My BB has had boutique labels like criterion, Arrow, & Scream Factory for years. It’s not the end of physical media, but BB is the last mainstream brick & mortar store that carries a decent amount of physical media so it’s definitely sad & will hurt a bit. I hate that everything is going online not just movies but everything. I like not paying shipping costs & dislike that I have to pray that my items aren’t delivered damaged or wind up lost.

I walked into what used to be a busy Best Buy with a Magnolia higher-end store inside. Now it's just sad. Very few selections in TVs. Almost nothing in physical media. Just trying to sell a limited selection of home appliances and computers. Really sad. Really slow. Best Buy has been dying for years. I wouldn't worry about what they are doing.
Do you think I made a mistake by Putting all my Blu rays except my boxed sets in sleeves along with the paper work in tact. including front and back sleeves . I still have my 4 K's though
My local Best Buy remodeled their store over the last year, and have completely phased out movies. Their gaming section is small. The only thing that seems to be thriving is the vinyl display. It's larger than ever.

In the UK we have a store called HMV that is kind of the last bastion of physical media retail. Went to my local store last week and found that the presence of video discs was scaled back by around 80%, replaced by… basically tat. Hoodies, t-shirts, pop vinyls and low-quality action figures.
I live in Chicago and there is no Bull Moose, Obit, Etc. The only place that we have is Disc Replay, which is a used DVD, Blu-Ray & 4K's, and guess where most people buy their copies from?
For me in europe there's the thing about different subtitles and when you shop online you can't see alot of times the scan from the back of the movie box. So when searching for your own language you have zero info or half of it. And when they sell movies with Thai and Turkish subtitles in Europe and not my country or other countries from Europe, they kill the industry by itself when you as customer don't buy it anymore because of the missing subs. So many times the same story. Or only English France Spanish and Germany and that's it! For alot of people is the homecinema the number one hobby and homecinema become also very expensive and physically is harder to get. It's not in balance anymore....
