Oden was winning, not barely winning, winning. Kaido was seen in the manga very bloody and damaged. It also explains why the old hag interfered, and why kaido fears him to this day.
There’s no basis to say kaido was physically weaker. In fact, kaido was the same exact age as oden (40) and had triple the amount of experience as a pirate.
Do you know who else is 40? Shanks and Blackbeard currently, are they far from prime? How about roger garp and Rayleigh who were also that exact age at god valley? They physically weak? There’s countless examples. It is abundantly clear that that age is prime in one piece, and thus kaido and oden were both prime.
Furthermore, kaido did use hybrid form. If you’re not aware, the fight was off panel/screen. It is foolish to believe a soon to be yonko would not use hybrid or their strongest attacks against a guy who has advanced forms of haki that had the advantage against him. Again, kaido was prime age, fighting against (at that time) the worlds strongest swordsman. If he didn’t have ACOC, kaido would’ve been absolutely bodied.
To add to this, CURRENT kaido is the one that compared oden to the greatest pirates of all time, in a list of the strongest pirates he’s seen/faced (above big mom confirming oden > big mom), that he deems are capable of fighting him equally in a deathmatch.
It stands to therefore reason that if he’s putting him on a list with the strongest ever, that oden has to be comparable, otherwise It would make no logical sense.
Even more to the point, there are canon sources that further back up kaidos statements. The one piece magazine confirmed kaido won by *deception* , not force.
