    HI Dylan: Was just introduced to your broadcast skills through your anchoring of the 2024 WSER
    I was heavily involved in the technical end of live sports broadcasting for near 2 decades. Worked 5 Super Bowls, 7 World Series, Stanley Cups, Daytona 500s, Olympics, America's Cups, etc. and (with team) earned 3 Emmys. I'm also an Ultra runner who retired to the eastern Sierra near Tahoe and spend ever hour I can (which is a LOT) in the back country wilderness. Few are as qualified to understand the crazy task the production crew took on to bring us the AMAZING coverage from a hundred miles of wilderness. Blown away. Absolute kudos to all.
    Yes, I know the learning curve is steep, and y'all know where you went wrong near the end of that brutal yet amazing 15 hour show so I'm not going to pile on here.
    Just want to say how WELL y'all did with a ragtag crew of amateurs who worked their hearts out and stuck everything but the landing. I've worked for years with the likes of John Miller, John Madden, Al Michaels, etc. You are a NATURAL. An amazing talent.
    Overall grade. A freakin' A++. The team should be so very proud of what was accomplished. If the WS gets to sports broadcasting big time, we know it all started here in 2024. Damn good, and a team of horses won't be able to stop me from volunteering for 2025. I'll sweep floors and dig trail ... don't care, just want to be a part of it.

      I echo your grade! I have only been tuned into the ultra world for a little over a year now and this was by far the best I have seen them do it. The tech actually held up for 90% of the race. Which never has happened. Also, both Corrine and Dbo are absolutely amazing at triage when it comes to coverage and field reporters not having audio or something coming up. Yes you can tell its still grass roots, but we will absolutely miss this type of coverage when it becomes better and better.
      You def should hook up with Mountain Outpost if you want to help with the broadcasting part of things. They are the ones who provided all the camera's and other tech stuff.

    Ryan’s story about reaching The Escarpment is why us middle of the packers put in for WSER year after year. Hope to live that dream in the somewhat near future!

    Ran my first ultra during the first hours of WSER and considered putting the livestream in my ears, but didn’t due to missing cell coverage. When the blind runner crossed the finish line I felt deeply for him, because some hours ago I missed the final Cut-oiff by 33 seconds. Kudos to Ryan for bringing it in and thanks for the work you all put in. It was amazing.

      This feels so impossible to me. They can't show/audio two things at once. People complain if they don't interview Jim, complain if they don't show the rest of the runners, complain if they're interviewing the men's podium but not giving updates on Katie. It boggles my mind how much improved the coverage was between 2021 and now. I believe 2025 will be even better. I just have no clue how they could possibly make everyone happy.

    • @ChrisSherwood-gj3sw
      @ChrisSherwood-gj3sw Před 25 dny +2

      I think it isn’t really complaining, considering both Rod and Hayden were on the track and closing, and it just seemed like no one was paying attention. In addition there was confusion as to who was on the camera. I’ve seen it before as well when towards the end, runners have not been mentioned as they came on the track because the commentators were busy just talking. Otherwise it was a tremendous job of coverage throughout. It was awesome.

      @BariatricUltra I don't think it would be very difficult to improve in the future. Simply have different people doing the interviews, keeping dBo and Corrine in the booth. Like what's done in every other sporting event. Or have one stay, one interview. Many options are possible

    I watched probably 10 to 12 hours of the race. I live in Indonesia so the time zones were a bit weird, but doable. The coverage has gotten better every year since I started watching 5 years ago. Dbo and Corrinne were excellent, as were the rest of the talent. Mountain Outpost elevated the visuals to a whole new level. The audio cut out more than I expected, but Jamil noted in a pre-race interview that the audio was surprisingly challenging while they were preparing. The on-course reporting was next-level - absolutely knocked it out of the park, especially the human interest reporting from Rucky Chucky during the night. The ending was disappointing, with the awkward change of announcers and the total confusion about what was happening in the race between Rod and Hayden. However, the people producing this coverage are responsible folks who will no doubt work their butts off to see that it’s coordinated better next year. Congrats to all involved.

    What an incredible round of racing and coverage! The grit & the glory @FreeTrail captured every moment. You have this roadrunner inspired! From the pre-to-post coverage I was there for it all...especially, "Tim's Takeaways" at the end ♥

  • @TimothyDohner
    @TimothyDohner Před 25 dny +1

    At Western States, as it is, Rod at 28 years old is ahead of where Jim was at that age. Weird to think about. Rod has a lot more to learn and experience to gain, but he really grew at this race. Next Level Up for Rod. Same goes for Jim. Jim got to experience some heat and the importance of understanding who he is by having the composure of an experienced ultra runner. Next Level Up for Jim too.

  • @EmptyeyeDotCom
    @EmptyeyeDotCom Před 24 dny

    A bit late here, but great job overall on the coverage. Definitely appreciate that, being a 100-mile trail race, being in a place to broadcast any of it at all is a miracle, and it was leaps-and-bounds improved over last year!
    The "start of the finish" of the men's race was, well, a cluster. And I'm speculating here, but I don't think the issue was that there wasn't a plan; I think the issue was there was a plan that was too rigid, basically relying on "Oh Jim's gonna dominate like he always does and the other finishers are going to come in staggered like they always do". To be fair, this wasn't exclusively an issue at the finish line--Tim mentioned having to basically shove media members out of the way at aid stations because the idea that someone could actually be on Jim's heels had apparently not occurred to anyone, and also mentioned a couple time seeing people on the course after Rod had passed Jim going "wait, ROD?!". Either way, though, the fact the race didn't go according to the script that was apparently in everyone's head probably made an already chaotic situation even moreso.
    Regardless, it seems like you all know that, whatever the cause, you need to do better on that front in particular, and I'm sure you will next year.
    Which I'll definitely be watching!

    It was the first Western States that I watched. Didn’t even know what it was til this year. I watched the damn live stream for probably at least 16 hours. Luckily I get my run in early. But, was totally unproductive all of Saturday. I don’t follow many sports. So, this was rather out of character for me. Anyway, probably the worst sport to try to watch since it literally takes hours and hours. But, I loved it!
