Are you talking about being a landlord? I don't know how it could be illegal to not hold rentals in other states. I talk to investors all the time who have rentals all over the country. They love their returns in Detroit the most though. There are many apartments that are national chains. A lot of properties aren't owned by one person either. They're typically held by a company anyway. So this makes no sense.

I don't have a link yet. Please email me: Monique@greatdaypm.com. I do talk a lot about Detroit, but I also go into each of the local housing commissions, which you may find valuable. I talk about passing inspections and how to work with Section 8 paperwork and tenants.
Yes, and you will find that person here while you live anywhere else in the world. It doesn't have to be YOU. When I talk with tenants, it's often the tenant never once has met the property manager or owner. They only ever see the maintenance crew. Why pay a property manager to simply send a maintenance person? Call them yourself. And if you're the one hiring the person here, you will get the information you want, instead of a property manager covering up their shortcomings.
Oh my gosh! Have never met a property manager here? This is one city I would NEVER rely on a property manager. I know way too many of their tricks. My course teaches you how to avoid throwing you money away on a Detroit property manager. My course teaches all the things you need to know about working with the city, many things I've learned property managers don't even know or don't bother to do. I could make a video a day of the bad things property managers do here in Detroit. I just don't want to be that negative. We see firsthand what they do. It's deplorable.
In some states, it is ILLEGAL to not reside in the same state that you rent in.

Detroit’s too rough and tumble for a remote landlord. Property mgmt worth it.
