We want the children - Torchwood - BBC

- From their temporary base Gwen, Ianto and Clement listen in on the Government as 456 makes its demands of Frobisher. The 456 want a gift, they want the children. Clement remembers the first time the 456 came to Earth in 1965, and when a familiar face emerges from the shadows his distress is all too apparent. Dramatic clip taken from the third season of Torchwood.

Peter Capaldi just really, REALLY wanted to be in Doctor Who. Do you think he ever imagined he'd go even further than this?
He was also in Doctor Who, before he was the doctor.
@@unmannedmechanic yeah, I assumed everyone was already aware of that. My point was that he jumped on 2 separate opportunities to be involved in any way, before being offered the dream role.
@@8Rincewind He is also one of the many actors who turned down the role to be the 8th Doctor, but I think at the time he knew it was only going to be a one time thing since it's movie. I'm glad he waited but it would've been fantastic to see him as the 8th, maybe then RTD would've recast Capaldi instead of Eccleston?
@@SteveCowlishaw But we would never have had (is that English? ^^') 12 and Clara + 12 and MISSY !

The Doctor chose the face of Frobisher and the face of Caecilius as his 13th face because he wanted to have a face that would constantly remind him of his duty to save the life of every innocent person he came across during this regeneration.
Edd Sampson Thanks. 12 even comes right out and days this specifically, when he talks about why he "frowned" himself that face. How are people still confused about this?

The greatest plot twist in television history is when the 456 turned out to be junkies.
John Scally when they were squirting chemicals everywhere and screaming and we had no clue what they were doing until we learnt the kids were drugs and it all fell into the place that they were just spazzing out from withdrawal. So creepy and unnerving
like the real adrenochrome junkies of the Elite. This is Pizzagate in a nutshell.
What if it was just one of them? My pet theory is the 456 calls itself 'we' because it's a gestalt entity - three heads. The human race got rinsed by a single strung out junkie.
@@jasonnicholasschwarz7788 Except this is more plausible.
@@jasonnicholasschwarz7788 except Pizzagate has no basis in reality whatsoever
The 456 seriously freaked me out. That screechy noise, mixed with the deadly calm, deep voice, the slimy stuff they threw out....and poor Frobisher. This was the first thing I saw Capaldi in and I thought he was brilliant.
Agree with you 100%, and also my first Capaldi, he was so very good.
Alien: "We want 10 %"
Middleman: "I remember why I chose this face.. Its to remind me. I AM THE DOCTOR AND I SAVE PEOPLE!"
Frobisher: "What do you want?"
456: "We desire....macaroni pictures."
Should have had a Monty Python twist:
"What do you want?"
456: "We desire... A SHRUBBERY!"
456: We want cookie dough ice cream.

TempusWare I thought the doctor was going to be in it
Nope, just re-watching this, 😔
You know, sometimes when the Doctor of this era fought off alien species, I thought he had a tendency to overreact. But this time, I'd really like to see what would happen if Ten was here. And I wouldn't want to be the 456 if he was.
We all know how much the doctor cares about children. All doctors would have been furious
He/she probably would be a lot angrier with the humans than the 456

@@kimmyjean1577 You're about as coherent as the 456 before translation.
@@alisonpurgatory85 Hard to say what he’d do in this situation. On one hand he should’ve learned his lesson about meddling with governments, but on the other this was around the same time he was doing the Time Lord Victorious shuffle, so I’d split the difference and say he’d blast the 345 off the face of reality and leave Torchwood to deal with the Prime Minister.
Children of Earth remains by far one of the greatest series of anything I've ever watched. Probably will do for a long time to come.
Shame Mircale Day happened. Children of Earth was the better send off.
It was horrendous in all the best ways.
Truly the creepiest of all villains in the Whoniverse - the 456 were basically toad-licking drug-addicted paedophiles. That's the long and short of it.

Oh, yeah, I would have LOVED to see Malcolm Tucker negotiating with the 456!
I don't think I EVER wanted to commit a genocide towards an alien race so much until I met species 456...
So... you're way worse than they are? You met one of them, and now you want to kill the entire species. At least they only wanted 10% of our kids :-/
@@PhilipZeplinDK Yeah only 10% of our kids to keep connected to them concious for at least 40 years.
And all for chemical pleasure they get from them... Using kids as Drugs.
I doubt The Doctor would stay calm after finding that out.
@@Archangelsvoid the Doctor would've decimated them. He cab forgiving to most, but to a species that does that to kids ... the 456 would've been very short-lived if he found out.
@@PhilipZeplinDK You'd let a race who demands that of other races like that exist? They are a threat to us and probably other races. They warrant only destruction.
@@PhilipZeplinDK you are not fit to speak on behalf of the human race, get a job
Absolutely loved Children of Earth, hands-down the best Torchwood series - far better than Miracle Day. I think what made it so good was the realism of it, and how the aliens were so ambiguous and threatening without being overt about it. The fact that we didn't actually know whether or not the 456 were actually capable of destroying the planet or not made for a real eye-opener - if this happened in real life, could we possibly take that risk? No. And it's not even that they're just asking for something like resources or water - the fact they want children is chilling enough, but the fact they want them to use as DRUGS of all things is just abhorrent, probably as messed up and offensive to the human condition as you can get. No warships, no lasers or bombs or even a properly visible enemy - just a threat, in words, that we could not possibly risk refusing. The concept of the aliens is very human and real-world in itself - drug use and child abuse - and our reaction to it is, unfortunately, disturbingly true to what would likely happen: governments would cave in, especially our petty British one. Very clever concept and execution. Can't praise it enough!
Dan French definitely agree with that. What a statement you’ve made about this bombastic and brilliant series of television. Children of Earth is one of the most chilling and realistic alien threats we will ever see on television or in cinemas. Bravo, Russel T Davies.
Good point, but resources like water are far more vital to survival of life on earth than human children. Here they ask for 10% of the Earth's children- which is a lot, put into perspective, but it's not near as important as if they'd asked for 10% of the Earth's resources. Sad though it may be, (and for a rather sick purpose, too) it would also help curb overpopulation.
@November Does objectivity and rational thinking offend you? What I said has nothing to do with the NWO (which is not only a silly conspiracy theory, but irrelevant seeing as we're talking about a fictional show here), and furthermore, isn't wrong. I acknowledged it was sick, but from another species' point of view it would be nothing (we do far worse to existing species). If your sensibilities are so easily affected, perhaps you should lay off the internet and follow your own advice, "douchebag".
@November stop drinking the cough medicine, kid - it's doing something to your brain.

He's in there again! That man is everywhere.
because he's the Doctor! 😀
Peter Capaldi... The Impossible Man
The fact The 456 exists in the same universe as the man in th eblue box makes me realise how dark the whoniverse is
Just rewatched Children of Earth, my favorite season of Torchwood ever. Just love the moment and his expression when Jack says, "As a gift.", he got so dark and emotionless it creeped me out the first time I watched it.
Dragged myself through seasons 1 and 2 of Torchwood.
Finished Children of Earth in one sitting.
It's not the 1st time they have had Actors/actresses play minor roles in doctor who and then move onto major roles. Just look as Freema Agyeman. She appeared in "Army of Ghosts" as a Torchwood 1 scientist and then she was casted as the doctors new assistant as Martha Jones and they mentioned in an episode that the 2 characters were cousins to each other to account for the same actresses. In my opinion I think this is a great move for Doctor who and I think Peter Capaldi will do an excellent job as being the new Doctor.
Colin Baker (6th Doctor) appeared in a minor role as well
Gillian H. Yes, and in The Fires of Pompeii Karen Gillan had a small role as a soothsayer - she would later appear as Amy Pond.
***** Peter Capaldi can fill an episode by playing every character himself, it seems like!
Gillian H. And depending if you consider Blake 7 to be set in the Whoninverse (I alwalys thought it was, I mean its a 70's scifi show by the BBC written by terry nation originally creator of the daleks) then Baker was also in that as a bounty hunter
The character Freema Agyeman plays in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday is Martha Jones' cousin. I think they chose her to play as the next companion as the writers saw potential.
Jack's "As a gift" line at the end is so chilling.
Gwen Cooper: There's one thing I always meant to ask Jack. Back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. The man who appears out of nowhere and saves the world. Except sometimes he doesn't. All those times in history when there was no sign of him, I wanted to know why not. But I don't need to ask any more. I know the answer now. Sometimes the Doctor must look at this planet and turn away in shame. 😔
Bruh, the doctor was right there, he was just being a troll
Shit what if the doctor was there tho? No one asks but I think it’d be so interesting. Actually no the doctor would come up with something stupid like filling up the tank with helium 😂
Moffat said the Peter Capaldi's roles in Doctor Who and Torchwood will not go unnoticed. I can't wait to see what he does with that.
Not much unfortunately. I was expecting something a little bigger.
Are you kidding? He became the Freaking Doctor Himself. Many Series, Specials, and even an Special Comic with his last 2 incarnations.
That was Big stuff.
Nah, if you say something like that then fans are gonna expect something big continuity-wise. The fact that he became the Doctor is completely separate - despite how awesome it is. Id've loved for some links to be made between Frobisher, Caecilius AND the Doctor. THAT would've sent whovians mad, but Moffet passed it up.
Charlie Wolff Not links with Caecilius? Someone hasn't watch the episode about the doctor discovering the reason why choosing said mans face for his regeneration.
As a promise, to never forget Donna's Words.
Yeah of course there were links with 12 and Caecilius but I was referring to all three - imagine if they linked both characters with Frobisher?!?! I know RTD said Frobisher ended up being a relative of Caecilius but that doesnt link him with the Doctor. Think about it - the Doctor (according to Jack and Ianto) would've stood up to the 456 but Frobisher complied with what they wanted eh? Also, I have seen that episode actually lol. It was the best moment of Who since Tennant left ahaha
A perfect opportunity (missed) for the 456 to have said "we want 10% of the Children of Earth"...gah on you writers!
TORCHWOOD: Children of Earth. One of the greatest pieces of television I have ever seen.
unedited footage of the Queen of England demanding more children to eat.
More like Prince Andrew
Thing is, if this were real life, I can't help but think those 10% would be stolen from third world countries.
Still better than being rigged up to giant birds as drugs for their entire lives, but yeah, that would probably happen.
V-Rex Just because they live a different life to what you perceive as "normal", does not mean they are less worthy of living. By your ridiculous logic, I could say that children from 1st world countries should be the ones to die because they've already experienced a good life. If we really couldn't fight the aliens then a fair response would be to take 10% of children from all countries from all walks of life. It does the least amount of damage to any one nation/culture/ way of living, spreads the pain across the board and isn't insane.
Why is that worse than from the 1st world?
oabuseer Just to point out, the aliens don't want the kids just so they can kill them. Earth children's brains have a cemical that "gives them pleasure". They want to use the kids as drugs to get "a hit" that makes them feel good. Yeah, they're literally paedophilic junkies, and that was their only motivation. This story is all kinds of messed up.
@@oabuseer Just no. That is not a fair response, it would lead to anarchy and violent protest, governments would collapse along with modern society, not to mention the sufferimg of those children
I'd rather go down fighting
Perhaps one of the best Science Fiction premises ever on TV, some hammy acting aside it's great, well structured, well thought out and with a stunning, some might say terrifying conclusion for our heroes.
Shame the BBC has fallen away from taking risks with shows like these nowadays...
This is such an amazing series. Incredible cast, but PC still stands out.
Peter Capaldi?
456: "You have no significance."
Frobisher: "Actually, I'm THE DOCTOR!"
456: *GTFO*
Frobish-Doctor: "EVERYBODY LIVES!"
Wait what, that was peter capaldi?.. jesus christ i didn't even notice.

No, he was no one back then so everyone just skip the character.
I assume you're joking? Peter Capaldi has been one of our greatest actors since Local Hero! The Thick of It for a start!
Sherlockowiec You mean Academy Award winner Peter Capaldi? Yeah, a nobody... 😒
@@sherlockowiec1693 I don't know about him being a nobody (I think probably not) , but this series was the first time I ever saw him, and I remember I was so captivated by him that I looked up anything else he'd appeared in and watched it. He's brilliant.
This is why I knew Capaldi would make an amazing Doctor.
This is who Jack really is. He'll float with the wind. Those who have seen him in Doctor Who have only seen him taking the side most likely to come out on top.
He abandoned the rest of them with little provocation. Don't understand how some see this as so out of character because Jack was never conceived as a heroic figure.
No he had to to save the planet. It's not like Doctor Who where the Doctor has loads of gadgets and gets lucky every time. Children of Earth is darker and a more real drama. Jack is the hero, it's just that in real life sacrifices have to be made sometimes. Yes, it's sickening, but Jack is a hero above all, despite the dark nature.
+katie9918 Still, the doctor blow up his own planet to save the univers. We just never saw it.
+Mike Fortin He saved it in a Moment of Time and Space and we DID see that...
Yeah, after thinking about it 400 years he change his mind. But he did burn his own people the first time... the proof is that when he change it, it create a paradox that erased the war doctor mind and the tenth doctor mind. He did burn his own people...
@@michaelfortin4930 nah mate. Ten and war don't remember any of the events that happened in the anniversary special for the same reason the eleventh (or the curator) don't remember it either.
When multiple incarnations of the doctor meet, it throws their timelines out of sync, meaning they don't keep their memories.
Otherwise anyone who isn't the youngest version would be to preoccupied by trying to exactly recreate the past and probably fail in their wordings and inflections with sentences.
It's much safer for for a mental fail safe in time lords to make them forget.
The doctor NEVER destroyed galifrey. Kinda sad they took that event away from the story.
This was the best series of the entire show. Loved every second of it. Kept me glued to the screen for all episodes that season.
Capaldi was brilliant in Children of Earth. Definitely best season of Torchwood.
This story was absolutely amazing. I loved it.
I have gotten used to saying "Damn it Peter!" Everytime Capaldi appears in something related to DW.
Add World War Z to your list, since he plays a doctor for the world health organization - the Dr. (from) WHO
The question is, would this still have happened if the Doctor hadn't gotten Harriet Jones sacked?
Probably as there's no doubt in my mind the Master would've have removed Harriet himself to get to power before this time.
That voice still creeps me out 😬 and when they go in the tank and see the “child” 🙈🙊
Been watching this entire series over the Easter Holidays and I thought it was absolutely phenomenal. It had everything in it- action, suspense, comedy, drama and hit every one of my emotions. The storyline was fantastic, it was full of mystery, there were fantastic characters with fantastic supporting performances from the actors (especially Eve Myles as Gwen and Peter Capaldi as Frobisher). The monster, the 456 was probably the most creepiest and most disgusting monster I have ever encountered in a sci-fi series. Truly wonderful series, a thoroughly deserved 10/10 from me.
Lets be fair here, if the Doctor was here and the 456 knew even the tiniest fraction of him, if they are smart and value their existence, they would flee from earth so quickly.
I still think about this today. It was so terrifying and still is.
This is the Torchwood I liked, before America ruined it.
+Robert Lythgoe there is another version of Torchwood?
Torchwood: Miracle Day?
I didn't like miracle day, or any classic doctor who, there were 5 episodes a plot, I lose interest.

Lucky for the 456 he was dealing with the Master Race I believe at this point, judging by when he sees Jack at the bar before going to regenerate.
The noise that the 456 is making was also in the first episode of Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston.
Am I the only one that loves the fact that Peter capaldi (?) plays the twelfth doctor and the guy in this
he was also in rome during Tennant's run I think.
He also plays in Season 4 of Doctor Who "Fires Of Pompeii" with The Tenth Doctor and fellow Scotsmen David Tennant
I'm really looking forward to Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. I mean, he's a great actor and a fan! According to MOFFAT - RT Davies had a storyline to explain why he was in Pompei & here in Torchwood. Moffat asked if he could still use this storyline to also explain why he's also the 12th Doctor and this will be played out of Series 8.
Agreed! He is a great actor and a fan of the show. I am also interested to see how this plays out with all the apparent duplicates about. Should be good to say the least since Davies had a plot penned out for such a scenario. It's just Moffat I am unsure about..... O.o

wow this really made me want to start watching torchwood
This was the best season of any tv show I've seen. So much tension and pressure in just a few short episodes.
I love how Capaldi had his share of minor roles in the DW world before his tenure as The Doctor!!

@@MANJYOMETHUNDER111 Why would they take those guys? The 456 have no need for adults.
The ONLY aliens in all of the Whoniverse, that actually frightened me. And then to find out that they want the children as drugs basically, made it even more disturbing. Im kind of glad that The Doctor wasn't involved w/ the 456 at all, because that definietly helped increase the "fear" factor of them/it. Id love to see the producers try to top the 456...not gonna happen for a while tho lol
After seeing Flatline I can just imagine after the 456 declaring that they will take the children, Frobisher suddenly switching character giving the "I tried to understand but you are monsters" speech and that his role is the man that stops the monsters revealing he is the Doctor and blasts the 456 away with the sonic. Yeah...that would have killed this series xD
Yeah but at least that weird thing America did wouldn't have happened... I'm still trying to figure that out
Now I wanna watch that show.
Loved this épisode 😍😍
best Torchwood series?
Now imagine what would have happened if Jack met Peter Capaldi's version of Doctor!!
That's still one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen.
Right all those complaining that Peter Capaldi was in Fires of Pompeii and Torchwood, Get over it, If there is a story line great if not it's not the end of the world.
Also Peter Capaldi didn't shoot his wife and children the character he was playing did jeez it is a sci-fi production, make believe, After the director shouted cut the woman and children got up and went about their normal everyday business.
This is why do-gooders say that television corrupts minds, people can't differentiate between make believe and reality.
Enjoy the programme for what it is.
I agree with you that it's not a big deal but it goes without saying that the actors dont actually die. You cant get mad at people who like to dive into the lore, even if the characters hes played are completely different
While I initially didn't agree that The 13th Doctor also played someone different in Torchwood, it's normal to assume that different people looking the same exist in different parts of the world. It's happened before
Cryio Z Whenever I see an actor who played a timelord, like the doctor or the master, I just pretend they were messing around with fob watches again.
***** I doubt it. Capaldi's character in Torchwood has a fuckin dark ending. The two shows are completely different beasts

It takes a lot to actually creep me out and terrify me, even within the horror genre. The 456 are the only Whoniverse monsters that I find genuinely unsettling.
Wish torchwood came back like this
Imagine a light hearted Doctor like the 3rd Doctor battling the 456
cant beleive that peter is the doctor now and is also in torchwood OMG
Mind Blown! It's the 12th doctor undercover!!
Like how they keep the 456 ambiguous they could be a civilisation, a drug cartel or even a junkie from a truly advanced race.
This is such a great show. So dark though. There is no good solution. It would bring out the worst in everyone.
The 456 are my favourite Doctor who franchise villian
I'm not a big fan of Russell T Davis, but this is by far the best thing hes ever written
I can understand them clearly. 😃😃
You know, the Colin Baker became the Sixth Doctor as well after he had already appeared as Commander Maxil in "Arc of Infinity" opposite Peter Davison as #5. There have been lots of actors who had multiple roles on the show or media associated to it. Even including, yes, David Tennant. Who appeared as multiple characters on the Big Finish Audios (Daft Jamie in Medicinal Purposes, Feldwebel Kurtz in Colditz, and a Roboman over the course of the third Dalek Empire series).
Please bring back torchwood
Luke Wilkinson it is back. On audio at least
Can't wait to see what hes got in store for Doctor who
I'd forgotten Capaldi was in Torchwood.
This must have been The Doctor’s mid-life crisis era...
Watching this and The Thick of It shows just how good an actor Capaldi is. Similar part, but very different characters and ways of acting. I can't wait for the 12th Doctor! ^_^
Doctor "Dalek, Cybermen, etc attacks the universe," I'm coming to save the day!
But when Torchwood has these problems. Doctor: You guys are on your own for this one!
Really makes you think how the doctor would have dealt with them if he had been there
ah love that welsh accent
So why is the prime minister in this named after a shape-shifting penguin robot?
A race of shapeshifters known as Whifferdills, but close enough.
Dom Jordan Frobisher is not the prime minister. 1:24, that’s the prime minister
I guess the doctor turned himself human again
Resulting in the most awkward post-regeneration moment ever.
"Where did i get this face" i found it again you got this one too, and the man from pompei and Malcom Tucker (who if he isnt DW canon ill be pissed)
In the same episode we saw him too :)
"Why did I choose this face?"
Of all the aliens on Doctor Who and Torchwood, none have scared me more than the 456...they're horrible! And, they killed Ianto...
Im looking forward to see Peter as Dr Who. I wonder if he can play a character that is so different from the ones he had yet. Especially the compassion doctor who has with the ones that suffer or are in peril. Or will the doctor change and become darker and more like " i do what i have to do " without much remorse.
Yes. Which is good.
The doctor only became Pious around the fourth doctor. Genesis of the Daleks.
Hrm? Yes, I agree with that.
David McConville Nah he just suffered from midlife crisis :D
Yes it did :)
Miracle Day did an amazing job with that it.
I've been binge watching Torchwood and thought it was pretty dark, specially the 2nd season, but Children of Earth made me change my mind. I don't think tv has ever got creepier than this. It was very painful too - Jack has made many mistakes, but how much did he have to endure in his life? Killing Stephen in front of his daughter was horrible and sickening, but better dead that way, rather then live your whole life attached to a terrifying creature that uses you as a drug. I think the most disturbing thing was seeing the child with the 456. And I would have probably shot my children as well, rather than being forced to give them to those monsters, condemning them to a lifetime of hell.
The Secret Sun brought me here. I hope this brings you there.
