I quite like the way that when Capaldi's character sees the kid hooked up to the 456, his first instinct is to shout ''What have you done to him?'' It's a nice way to humanise these characters. John Frobisher was, before a government agent or anything like that, a parent, so of course his first reaction to seeing a child in such pain was to shout in protest.
I see it like this I feel like
After 50 years of pain you would probably stop making a fuss about it.
@@profblack Apparently they aren't in pain but they're fully aware of what's going on.
@@vimtocat1741hat’s the horror of it, they know what’s going on (their bodies being harvested and used as a recreational drug), but they can’t speak up about it or even do anything about it
@@bandersnatch9469Pretty much yeah, even if there also isn't pain I can imagine they still feel themselves being butchered, plus fifty years of being kept in a near vegetive state judging by the heartbeats would probably drive you mad, I'm guessing the slow one was the child's heart.
This is so haunting, probably by far the darkest the who universe ever got.
@Withnail I think the guy that literally got blown in half and still alive was pretty freaky.
@@jplegend98 Big Finish did some stuff which is arguably darker (I Davros and some of the War Master serials come to mind) but this is much closer to home. Most of the evil in Children of Earth isn't even commited by the 456, but by ordinary human politicians. It's scary because you can almost imagine it.
One of the most disturbing scenes in the Doctor Who universe.
@realmaximouse That Mutated head in Revelation of The Daleks is a close second.
children of earth is a prime example of why an 18+ more serious style doctor who could work. Torchwood Series 1, 2 and 4 came off as quite silly at some points but Children of Earth was so good.
No. RTD say that Doctor Who is a family show. And Torchwood is not Doctor Who.
@@mayotango1317 I didn’t mean that doctor who should go 18+ but a spin off that featured the doctor in more mature scenarios would be excellent to watch
@@MentoRyuzaki Id love a whole 18+ show based on Lumics cybermen, in yet another parallel world without the doctor intervening.
The cybermen are such a good concept that I feel is sometimes wasted on doctor who, they deserve their own show where its basically the plot of rise of the cybermen but without the doctor, but stretched out into a whole series, with more scenes on the streets hiding from them too
TW series 1 was often a bit silly , especially the sex alien. I’m pleased they moved beyond that.
I think what makes the 456 such good villains is the very human like nature of them. In the end they are a bunch of junkies whom will do whatever they can for their next high and if that means hurting some animals, even children for it, so be it, as the needs are more important. It just this time they are in a considerably stronger hand due to their technology. They are quite understandable, twisted mirror for the dark side of humanity.
Add to their random fits of anger when they yell and hit the glass. Just like an unstable junkie .
Gwen's right, there are times where The Doctor is never there to defend the Earth from alien threats
+makeupby Aidan I think the Children Crisis and Mirical Day and other such events are fixed points in time, they had to happen without his intervention, so he stays away.
+Ben Todd It's also possible he was simply occupied with saving someone else's planet or was unaware of it happening entirely. He is not perfect and can only be in so many times at once.
What are you talking about he's righ- oh wait Peter wasn't the doctor when this episode came out.
That thing is creeeeeepy (456). And the fact that you never get to see it w/o all the toxic gas makes it more effective.
It took me HOURS to dig up what series this scene came from, as I saw this scene as a child myself, because I HAD to know . I had to know why, to this day , it’s one of the most traumatic scenes I’ve viewed on television.
The saddest was Closure from X-Fikes, but this- THIS one haunted my memory for YEARS
Okay I'm glad I'm not the only one cause I've been hunting this terrifying show down for the past 2 hours. I didn't even remember that it was torchwood and assumed it was some bizarre Syfy miniseries. This show haunted me for so long I'm not quite sure why anybody let me watch this.
Don't remember this series of the thick of it
I do this is how the prime minister truly looks behind the door at number 10
There is zero chance he only had a bpm of 109. It would be through the roof with adrenaline, just watching I was a bit amped up.
Depends on his training. Buzz Aldrin had a bpm of 90 during the Apollo 11 launch
That Cameraman's going to need some serious PTSD treatment...
Children of Earth was the first Torchwood series I saw
I remember watching this on tv when it first aired in the US, I cried as well. So hard to watch.
The 456 sound like Kylo Ren with an English accent
You know, I would make a mashup of their voice over images of Ren but no one would get it.
I’ve watched Dr Who & Torchwood from 1963 till today & this scene & story line were the only things that ever disturbed me.
"THIS PLANET IS DEFENDED!", The 10th Doctor.
You allow children to be used as drugs whilst you saunter off on a merry holiday to prove how great you are to others.....VANITY ISSUES
Well there are some things that he can't go and do.....BUT he was there omg how did I not notice, PETER CAPALDI! The Doctor was there.
Antonio De Medeiros True, Frobisher would have been called John Smith and he would not have had a wife and kids.
Antonio De Medeiros Steven Moffat said he would address both occurrences of Capaldi in the Whoniverse
Emily Calles That doesn't mean that both characters are the Doctor. He would never shoot children. NEVER.
waiting for the 12th Doctor to spring into action.
this scene and the scene where Jack sacrifices his grandson are the saddest in Children Of Earth
That's horrible. I'm going to cry now.
That is HORRIFYING. And just think, the true horror isn't revealed until the next episode.
the best doctor who story to this day
Best season
I keep forgetting this I'd the same universe
I think its awful and sad what the 456 does to the 11 children from 1965 :(
Me too, those poor children bored because they're attached to the 456 for the rest of their life. :'(
Who knew, that Dekker the civil service engineer was secretly an Elder God in disguise.
RTD's definately better at adult dramas. :)
@ Kothapalli Hemanth
thats a good idea, but i'd like to see torchwood set in the future. this would tie in the Face Of Bo subplot as well hopefully. :)
@penninefilms Nope, Torchwood is the *very* adult spinoff of Doctor Who. If you want a children's show, that's The Sarah Jane Adventures. It is the kiddie spinoff of Doctor Who. Still good, but it's aimed at kids instead of the whole family (like Doctor Who) or adults only (like Torchwood).
Love to see the 12th Doctor keeping an eye on things.
Hello and im new here and that s child on 456 snd he has three heart beats
they should be a dr who episode about someone hire by the 456 who traps the doctor in another dimension or keep him otherwise away from earth to minimize the risk for their plan.
@penninefilms dr who is the series mostly for children
3:46 UNSEE UNSEE UNSEE. GET ME THE GOD DAMN EYE BLEACH!!
I think I read somewhere that moffat was going to take this and the pompei into account with capaldis doctor
I believe Frobisher was the descendant of... the roman whos name I can't spell
He must have assumed that it was a children's show because Doctor Who is kid-friendly. He did not realize that Torchwood is not kid-friendly.
You do realize dr who is not
Kid friendly right there’s a scene where jack was naked in series one of the dr who revival show right
Jaden Bryant not kid friendly family friendly it was supposed to be reimagined there’s a documentary somewhere interesting
So I went down to Torchwood and said what you gonna do about them aliens
Mr dekker is Zelen!
I was thinking only earlier today "Are they the same actor?" and they are! Both played by Ian Gelder.
omg it's the doctor!
The one time the doctor is NOT there
@@gdearing1 it's in the same universe but he either didnt know, was a shames of seeing it or knew this was a fixed point in time
Nah, The Doctor is the hero on Dr. Who. Captain Jack has to be the hero on Torchwood. Can’t have the guest-star supersede the Show’s protagonist, relegating him to just supporting cast status on his own show. It’s just not done.
Gerald Dearing uno they was gonna have jack do his best but still loose only got the doctor last 2nf to show up but I guess they changed there minds
@@DalekCaanOfSkaro Why would the doctor not doing anything cos they're ashamed of seeing it??
Peter Capaldi - 12th Doctor :D
One thing that doesn't make much sense is how the kid is still alive after all that time, might have been more interesting if the 456 had made more clandestine deals with each nation and we're increasing their dependency on the supply to the point.
@penninefilms
Torchwood isn't a children's show.
Who like me feels tears when he see this scene ?
Hmmmm... They don't seem very pleasant
@Kothapalli, That wouldn't work because they got Peter Capaldi to play a very big role in this episode to it would just look wierd
"the stolen earth"
I thought I was watching doctor who
Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood could get pretty dark, even more than Class. At least we had a spinoff of the Sarah Jane adventures which wasnt depressing as hell.
Ino that but like in torchwood
This is just disturbing...
So at 3:00 what was that suppose to be I know it's one of the children but what they do to it?
i could never, should let the planet go down together than to sacrifice one child's/adult's pain for this monstrosity. Like we're not even all that decent so... who are you sacrificing for? If you can't fight for one another's (equal) rights, then there is no point. Especially orphaned children, whom have already lost so much and felt bitter loneliness their whole life? Sacrifice ordinary people's children and it's suddenly a crime against humanity that will not be tolerated? Lol, I felt like this series was so cruel. Honestly I think they ruined the Jack character for me with this one. Like, he was no longer a person to me that I could be concerned about. But since the series hit a nerve, I have to say, it was better written, at least, than some of their other stuff.
+bell lab Well, it was implied in many series that Jack wasn't always the niceish guy he is now. It's also possible he had no idea exactly what the aliens would do to the children, or they lied to him about it. As for handing over the children, what annoys me is how no one thinks about the fact that if they did, then the 456 would just keep coming back for more and more. They *are* drug addicts after all.
Yes,at first they wanted 12 ,then they wanted more.I was too young at the time to watch .Were the children attached.Could they come apart.were they kept young somehow??They seemed aware of what was happening because the little boy was crying.Actually my parents not letting me see this was a good idea
The Doctor is not our babysitter. He can't be in all place at once. To save humanity from a conquest by a superior humans race we must sacrifice what we have of our humanity in this generation to save the next. so at the very least they can survive. to do otherwise is to doom everyone
What I thought was most amusing was the fact that no one picked up on the fact that the 456 didn't bother introducing themselves (as in "what are we called/known by"): do you introduce yourself to your food/prey?
I read a fan theory that the alien was high.He had the boy with him and they would not be stupid and let Earth see what they did with the original kids.Right after that they made their request and demands because they realized their cover was blown
It never was. Why would you even think it was?
What do you think happened to the child when the creature died in Ep 5
the alien was being hurted and about to die bc of jack but it left right before it happened the same way it arrived with the huge fire teleportation thingy in the sky so i’m guessing it took the child along
@@cutielyzzie It clearly exploded, there's no way the child wasn't killed along with it
To be honest, brilliant as CoE is, it's sort of the reason that Torchwood was cancelled. Because it is simply too dark to have any mass appeal. It is the most distressing and disturbing TV to ever be produced. Every time I try to watch it again, I almost throw up because it's impossible to watch if you know what's really happening. It borders on being anti-life affirming.
Danny Westbrook Some people can't handle anything more than sunshine and rainbows, but many can. Sometimes you have to be brave and take risks, make the audience reflect their own humanity. It's better that this existed and had an ending than to never have existed in order to favor the fluffy people.
It might've lasted longer if they'd aired it on HBO. Often, shows that air exclusively on HBO last far longer than they would have on regular networks. I sight for example, Arliss.
Danny Westbrook dark shows do have mass appeal tho.. black mirror for example
DR WHO and TORCH wood should get together for an episode
matthew devine in a way they do, and The Sarah Jane Adventures, cos the series 4 finale was when the Daleks stole 27 planets, including earth to create the reality bomb, Jack, Gwen and Ianto was in that episode aswell as Sarah Jane and Luke from SJA
No wonder why the good doctor wasn't there,he like a galifeion would of made that thing non exisant and made us nearer to it...
Can someone explain whats happening to the children, what they need them for, and why did Jack send them. And are they feeling everything and how does it stay a child for so long?
To put it bluntly, children are recreational drugs to the 456. The 456 literally get high off of them.
The 456 voice is so creapy
so why the heck is there o video show the 456s true intentions. p.s i love the philosophy of this series
It is...so it's like...Doctor, is that you? What are you doing? Do something? Kill the bastard aliens, would you since you were foul-mouth Malcolm Tucker (from the "In the Thick of It" show) after using the chameleon arch.
So what exactly did they do to the child?
how is it still a child after 40 years?
Why do the 456 want children?
the 456 can generate remedies for incurable diseases, and by that logic; they can do much more. so it really should not come as far fetched if they can immortalise a child for drug use. however, the question still rises: why do they need more kids?
@@nivaneh1010 I'm pretty sure the kids become less and less useful as their lifespan goes on. So maybe because they realised how good the kids felt, they not only wanted to restock but this time, bring back more. Maybe even extra to sell off if the kids are seen as valuable, expensive drugs. It's so fucking depraved.
