  • BTUFF went and watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. If you've never seen it, it's a must see. The procedure is done at Arlington Cemetery, in Washington D.C. This procedure happens year round. We got a closeup of the inspection which is one of the most disciplined things you will ever see. At the end you see a Honor Flight ceremony. Make sure to give the video a like if you enjoyed it. The tomb of the unknown soldier is a must see.

Yah they do that during the inspection and when they finish their shift. If the rifle was loaded it would be a serious hazard to be spinning around like that so it’s a flashy way to do a basic safety check before the rifle gets flipped and smacked and stuff. (Yes I know that m14s have a magazine and they don’t have one but a lot of accidental shootings happen because people take the mag out of the gun and don’t realize there is a round in the chamber. The guard charging the rifle would eject the round if there was one in the chamber)

To all those who may laugh about the old men in the background:
Once they where well trained, once they fought for their country, once they where in a condition enemies where afraid of.
In just a few years all those who are now the strong ones will look the same. YOU will look the same.

While I don’t know much about what we used to call ‘Delta Force’ and is now ACE (and has a new name that they’ve been able to keep civilians from finding out so far) I have heard that more soldiers will pass their training and make it into Delta than there are soldiers who pass their training and become one of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I had the distinct honor of being at the changing of the guard on Thanksgiving weekend in 1976 when I was on liberty from Camp Lejeune North Carolina.
I was in my Dress Blues, and was standing at the back of the crowd as I watched the ceremony.
When the Sergeant of The Guard was at the front, and spoke to the crowd, he said; "Members of the military who are present, and in uniform, are required to render the proper salutes upon the orders of 'present arms'...." I thought to myself; "I would have done so, no matter what".
But when the orders of "Present Arms", and "Order Arms" were given, I did as ordered. And thus became a part of the ceremony. I have never forgotten that, and will carry that honor with me until the day I die.
I don't know who the Unknown Soldiers are...but I will never forget them.
May they rest in eternal peace, and may perpetual light shine upon them.

There's one particular moment in this ceremony where the guards "salute" the veterans in attendance without raising a hand. They don't do it every ceremony but if you pay close attention they definitely do something different when there are veterans in the crowd.

When the guard comes on the Tomb Plaza, as he walks by those veterans, he scuffs his show. It is a secret salute which the veterans listen for. And the guard gives it without any fanfare.

Hi, all the movements with the rifles are very fast and accurate. So I wonder why the new guards are putting down their rifles so demonstrative slowly and carefully to their side 1:28 ? Of course they don‘t want to hit the ground too hard in order to not damage the metal, but it seems to me kind of overdone.
And there‘s this tiny delay in presenting the rifles at 3:28 , what dose that mean?
This can be seen in every footage, so it‘s intended and no mishap. Any ideas why they do that? What‘s the intention?

The Relief commander or whoever is conducting the changing we mumble under their breath whatever you got wrong, the new guard then has 1 minute to fix it, and if they fail a second time they do not go back out.

Yes. They are fully functional vintage M14. These soldiers are fully trained on the M14 and the bayonet. However, they are not loaded.

Small ones get fixed. Bigger ones get rejected. One notable mistake was the guard that dropped the rifle… the replacement had to continue but was relieved a few minutes later

One dropped on a sentinel. He guarded the tomb for a few minutes while another sentinel received the word from either the old guard (the one originally being relieved) or inspection guard (the one who dropped the rifle while inspecting the relief) to get ready quickly.
