- The Baofeng 5RM is a newer offering by Baofeng. I do a brief overview and some of the most popular menu items for simplex operation. Available now in a nice two-pack on Amazon. Is it the UV5R killer? Is it the best SHTF HT Radio? Let's find out!

I need the video with all the channels explained! The over view for the 5rm was great!
We have a companion video coming ip in the near future for the 5RMG which the GMRS version of that radio
I just want it for push to talk. Just ordered. Can’t wait!
You will like it. Good radio for the price
Nice work. Be patient and good luck.
Thanks! More to come
Sorry, we find the microphone earpiece invaluable for hunting. The group operates at a whisper. We keep the noise in the woods as clean as we keep the campsite.
@bulldogbrower6732 No need to for sorry. I certainly agree with what you said. It's not the idea of the earpiece, I just wish the build quality was a little better. I have a set of noise cancelling headphones with a PTT mic I plug into which is great for hunting. The headphones have ambient sound amplification which is a bonus too. I know for the price point they can only do so much, but I would rather they either upgrade the ear/mic combo or use that cost for extra radio features.
I wouldn't trust the earpiece for too long. Spend $10 and get a air acoustic earpiece (the "fed" earpiece) and a set of earmold or over ear earpieces. Something that doesn't block the entire ear canal.
They also generally have much better wiring and better PTT switch
I just picked one up on amazon. Im excoted to get it. I have a uv5r and a bf8td
This will replace the one I will carry is my pack.
I have a couple of baofengs, and when I decided to document the serial numbers of all my radios, I can't seem to find a serial on my baofengs. Am I just missing it, is it inside the case? Or are they making millions of these without serial numbers?
My UV5-Rs have it printed on the the label on the radio body under the battery. It's a barcode printed toward the bottom. My 5RMs have no serial number printed. So it appears they may or may not include a serial number with every unit. And honestly I never even looked for one before you posted this question. Learn something new everyday!
Above everything else, the USB charging and AM aviation bands sold me on this as an upgrade to my UV-5R and UV-5X3. I don't expect BaoFeng to put the money into the required hardware changes but I really wish we could get USB programming as well and ditch the proprietary radio cables. However I found one MAJOR downgrade from the 5X3 and that's the ability to set channels for skip during scan via the radio itself rather than requiring CHIRP to do it. If you're in an area with a noisy channel or one with interference it gets annoying while scanning and not being able to temporary set it to skip like you can on the 5X3.
Yes having the skip function is nice when scanning for sure
Is the stock antenna good? I cant seem to find upgrade antennas for these. Only for the uv5r models..
The stock antenna it comes with is not bad. It has more sensitivity in the UHF/GMRS bands than in VHF. And it is an improvement over the stock UV5R. **Any antenna that is compatible with the UV5R will work with the 5RM.** The Nagoya 771 is decent, the Abbree 42.5 inch is an excellent performer with the 5RM, but almost cartoony in length. We have antennas in development that will be for sale soon. They are custom-designed and tuned specifically for triband handhelds. A video on them will be out soon.
Look at the Nagoya tri-band antenna..
My 5rm can work the local repeater from inside my work building, something my uv5r couldn't do.
Antennas are not model-specific, but connector-specific. As long as it has a female SMA connector you can use it. When I got my 5RM I took my Nagoya 24J off my UV-5X3 and put it right on.
Question … does the smaller battery on my UV-5R fit this radio? Thanks
Unfortunately no. The battery is larger and it also uses a different charger
Kinda wanna pick one up this does digital modes
No unfortunately not. However they may have an analog simulcast. Radioreference.com should have that information if avaialble.
I see bodies with UV-5RM and bodies with 5RM. Does enyone know if thees are the same?
They are two different radios. The 5RM is the one featured here. The UV-5RM I believe is only dual band too (2m/70cm)
@@CommodiumThanks!
Just got one and im having trouble figuring everything out. Need help!
No worries. We can help! The manual is always a good place to start. The menu can be a bit overwhelming to a beginner. Is there something in specific you had a question on?
i can get 1.25m on a uv_5r
Yes! the 220Mhz band both transmits and receives with this radio.
can you jail break it
As of the time of posting the video, and using the link in the description, there is no lockout on the frequencies the radio is capable of operating on.
Thanks for the review. I see you're new like me. It looks like already good editing, which is a huge plus. Getting new material will be on the forefront of your mind all week, every week! It's kind of exciting.
Waving at you from NW Georgia.

Thanks Matt! I appreciate it! Will have lots more content on the way.
to be honest some of the fcc's rules are made to be broken nlg
Remember they are rules not laws. Also with the recent Chevron ruling from the Supreme Court they ruled these agencies can't make laws. Do as you will, the government doesn't own the air.
