- After some conversations on our morning 220 MHz simplex talk group here in Teller County, Colorado I decided to purchase the 2023 Baofeng 5RM tri-band HT from Amazon. I heard it only ships with a 2m/70cm rubber duck so I also included the 18" Abbree tri-band antenna as well as a 42.5" version of the Abbree tri-band antenna. Once I got the radio in and at least the 18" Abbree I got to programming it up for local communications and set out to do some field tests using the radio and antenna combination. I will show in the radio how to use Chirp to download the image file from the radio and then import a previous channel list setup from an older Baofeng model so I didnt have to manually program in over 55 repeaters. Once that's done I will also show you how to upload a 160x128 bitmap picture to use as a startup logo. Finally I will take the unit out to the field and do some distance tests and audio quality transmit tests on 220MHz as well as 2m.
Great video!
At first, manual programming was VERY frustrating. I found that if I EXIT the Menu after EVERY change, it programmed just fine. FWIW
My only complaint about this radio is the battery life, but in Amazon they have these 3500 bigger batteries that I’m gonna try out
Nice Vídeo.
Great video. I just ordered that radio yesterday. Can’t wait to listen with it. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for another great video about my favorite HT. Answers a lot of my questions about antennas.
Appreciate the thorough video 👍🏻
Holy shit yall sound very familiar. I reside in Las Cruces New Mexico and I bought a 2pk Baofeng UV-5R and for now I jus listen to County Fire and Sheriff's. At one point I had a repeater programed and would listen to guys who sound jus like you and your buddies. Hopefully I'll get my license and a ican finally get back into radios again
😂 I'd love to figure out how to listen to anything but one of my other radios. No pc 😢 programming way over my head😂
@@redndeyesI’m new to this world, but I have seen Bluetooth enabled plugs that allow you to program through your phone(&PC), instead of pc/cable only.
I just ordered one too should be here tomorrow as well ! Can’t wait to try it out ! 73 W4ZTX
It’s been decent enough for an HT. I need to do some more use on it but have had some other radios to try out in the meantime. I hope you enjoy it as I found it to be quite functional. Ham-Solo K0FYR
The 42.5" inch made a huge improvement for me on my 5RM
Yeah I just got it so gonna play around and do some tests soon. Ham-Solo K0FYR
I got one of these last week and so far it has been a really great radio. Your video confirmed what I have been experiencing. So far, so good. It is built really tough. I just got a new mobile antenna for it today, so I can use it in my van now. Should improve reception in a big way.
What mobile antenna did you get and are you happy with its performance?
@@geraldhenrickson7472 I got the VFAN dual band magnetic base mobile antenna from amazon.
Good review I just ordered one $28.00 bucks on Amazon it came next day with 2 antennas a short one and a Abbree that’s about 18 inches I manually put in 20 repeaters and one simplex so far really like it mine was advertised at 8 watts not 10 and I know there’s some bad reviews and it puts out spurious emissions but 28 dollars come on all so the air bands I don’t know where your at but looks like cool place thanks for the review. just got the 5RM (CHIRP) tried to upload to it from a UV-5R file, but it would not take, the only way it would take is to download from the 5RM then to import my existing UV-5R file into that file then upload that to the the new 5RM.
Great video thanks for the info, Do you know the difference between the Baofeng AR-5RM and the Baofeng 5RM ??? Thank you 😊
I’m sorry I do not and can’t seem to see any info on the differences. The AR-5RM is cheaper by about $5 and they don’t mention the air band (aviation). Not sure what else might be different. Ham-Solo K0FYR
I am pretty sure you mean UV-5RM. that is an old UV-5r type radio. I believe they are at least 5 years old and not the same as the new 5RM in any way.
Do your channel names show up after using the chirp software?
I actually prefer to see frequencies but I believe you can show either channel names, frequencies, or a combination of either. Ham-Solo K0FYR
so with this radio you can do uhf/vhf/gmrs/DMR?? or am i misunderstanding tri-band
That isn't exactly accurate for the description for tri-band. In this case for this radio tri-band refers to the frequencies the radio is able to operate on. It is able to be used on VHF (144-148MHz) which is the 2 meter band, VHF (222-225MHz) which is the 1.25 meter band, and UHF (440-449MHz) which is the 70 centimeter band. It is not able to do multi different modes like DMR which is a digital mode and this is only an analog radio. I'm sure that if you modified it you could probably use it on GMRS but that technically wouldn't be an official radio compliant with Part 95 but in an emergency could be used that way. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Is that the one with airband.....that what interests me...if so have you tried it?
It does have airband receive but I haven’t been home to try that. I’m sitting near the airport in Sacramento so I may try and go there and see what I hear. Ham-Solo K0FYR
You need an airband antenna for it. The stock one works, but it isnt great.
@@keithfoco yeah I’ve been trying with Abbree antennas and it’s kind of noisy. I will edit that video soon and post it. I’m kinda behind a little due to work travel. Ham-Solo K0FYR
You need to invest in the Nagoya 77 Antenna!!! The one you have is junk. Thanks
@RobertPierre-pi6pb it's more than just the antenna. I just got a uv-17 pro gps and it receives Air band way better than the 5rm. I guess it's been a popular complaint with the 5rm that the air receiver sucks
I ordered a 5rm but ended up getting an AR-5rm not sure what the difference is. Hopefully it will work out.
👀, It's the same 😎
I just ordered two, got one today 🤠
Is the antenna you bought the 18.8 abbree triband on Amazon for 9.99
Yes, and I also got the Abbree 42.5” triband on Amazon for about $15.99. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Abbree is junk. Nagoya 77 is recommended, Antenna is most important part of the Radio.
My image keeps saying failure and it’s the right size what bmp settings did you use
Oh sorry are you talking about the screen picture on the radio? Stand by let me look.
It is 160 X 128 BMP file. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Ham-Solo K0FYR
@@Ham-Solo I figured it out. The image setter had a different com port I had to pay attention to details. But thank you for this my radio is awesome now on startup
@@Ham-Solo thanks for the great content btw
@@thomasthewatchman I appreciate that. Thank you and keep watching and I’ll keep doing. Ham-Solo K0FYR
Find someone with a spectrum analyzer and you will cry. I was very disappointed with the harmonics.
I bought it for the aircraft receive capabilities and the larger memory bank.
I kind of take that for granted with the BaoFeng radios and don’t expect to much on that front given it’s only 35 dollars. I just happy to have a decent 220MHz HT. Ham-Solo K0FYR
@@Ham-Solo Yes my UV-S9X3 is a lot cleaner than the 5RM. Out of three UV-S9X3's I had one that would not even let me enter 220 frequencies.
I will use my 5RM for mostly monitoring and grab a different radio to transmit.
Supposedly the new amazon 5RM's are a lot cleaner than those original aliexpress ones that all the youtubers initially got. I have not been able to verify this with my own radio though.
@@keithfoco I bought my 5RM last month. 2nd harmonic is-12.5
3rd harmonic is -41.2
4th harmonic is -48.0
it is my dirtiest radio yet purchased.
@@keithfocoMy 5RM came from Amazon.
