    I noticed another little quirk with the UV-5RM. If either the vfo or memory channel is set to an AM frequency and you switch to the weather scanning function, the weather channel is just static. Presumably because the radio is stuck in AM mode. You have to go back to the main screen and set the radio to an FM frequency. Then going back into the weather channel function allows the FM signal to be received

      You weren't kidding! I just tried that and yup! Still could hear it, but very faint with a lot of static. Just really bad. Went back into FM mode and then back into weather and clear as a bell. Interesting for sure. Hopefully they'll come out with a new firmware update soon since it is a new radio release. Radio definitely has a few little glitches to get worked out...

    I purchased this radio primarily because I live within 15 miles of three airports and wanted to listen in on the aviation traffic. Accordingly, I want to emphasize reception on the aviation band and wondered if you could recommend an antenna. I am not a ham and won't ever transmit on those frequencies. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you in advance for your efforts. I like your site.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thank you. If you're not transmitting, the stock antenna will probably be OK. Otherwise, the Nagoya 771 and Signal Stick are good third party antennas. Although these don't advertised being tuned down in the low 100 megahertz range. That's primarily for transmit, though.

    • @Alchemist39
      @Alchemist39 Před 2 měsíci

      I sort of disagree. Since this is a multi-band radio I would look for a tri-band antenna. I think it's called the 773. The 771 is really only good for the 2m and 70cm bands, but if that was all you would be using it for then yes. It's a good antenna, but not so good for other bands like you were asking.

    So what is really the problem with this radio?
    It costs $27 and has civilian air band RX.
    It easily transmits over 5W. So it looks like it’s perfect for hobby and for an emergency use.
    And it was approved by FCC.
    I’m just a regular user. Please elaborate on this radio more from this point of view. I appreciate it.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 2 měsíci +1

      The FCC certification is for Part 15 which has to do with incidental RF radiation and things like not receiving cell phone signals. It is not "approved" for ham use. No radios are. A licensed ham has the responsibility to operate within the Part 97 rules. The radio I tested did not meet Part 97 emissions standards in the 2 meter band. For me, that was the issue. Cheers. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Are there any FCC documented reports on Baofengs or any other low cost HTs causing serious problems with local emergency responder transmissions or repeaters? Seems like there would be some with it being the most used radio.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 5 měsíci

      The last big story was when someone used an open radio to talk on fire frequency on purpose. As I recall, fine was about $25k. It seems the root of your question is 'what's the harm if there's no evidence of harm.' My sense is that mitigating harm through frequency management is a legitimate goal as opposed to waiting to act until something bad happens. That means someone suffers some kind of loss.

    • @Alchemist39
      @Alchemist39 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Are you talking about spurious RF emissions coming from the HT or something like that? If so, I doubt it. There's just soo much RF interference nowadays with everything it would be hard to notice. Just another drop in the bucket as the saying goes. If you're talking about intentionally broadcasting over emergency frequencies for no good reason. That's a big no-no unless (very unlikely) you're in an emergency yourself and you have no other way of communication.
