The RF&P Railroad's Odd Operations

  • The Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad was a bridge line transporting freight for railroads like the Chesapeake & Ohio and Seaboard Coast Line. It wasn't a very big railroad, only spanning 113 miles from Richmond, Virginia to the United States' capital at Washington D.C. Within their trackage however, were some interesting operations unlike any other railroad of the time. In this video, I talk about 3 unique operating practices on the RF&P Railroad.

    I hired as an engineer on the RF&P on this date in 1980, having been promoted to engineer on the Southern Railway in 1979. The RF&P was a great outfit to work for! One slight correction: the GP40-2's (141-147) only had one control stand, but the ATC system could be set up for long hood forward by breaking a seal down in the nose and changing the position of a small brass lever which was the same as the acknowledging lever mounted on the cab wall by the engineer's seat. The GP35's (131-138) and straight GP40's (121-127) had dual control stands. I'm still running for CSX with 42 years seniority on the roster.

    Great little video! Never knew railroads as small as this had so many unique operations. Maybe you should make a mini series going over quirky or unique facts about a railroad, whether is be a fallen flag or shortline.

      Virginia is quirky like that.
      We had a large number of short railway lines that were major money makers due to their strategic placement. The Virginian Railway is another good example, since it funneled coal down from West Virginia to the ports in Norfolk. In fact, prior to the US’s entry into the Great War, the US Navy’s ships were supplied with coal shipped by the Virginian Railway, since the railway was in close proximity to the Naval base and manufacturing facility in Norfolk.

    I never knew the RF&P had any of these features in their operations but that makes it even more unique and me more fascinated by it. Even though I learned something new here, my favorite feature about the RF&P was that they named all of their 4-8-4s after Confederate Generals, Statesmen and Politicians. These were the last steam engines in the US to be given names. Shame none were preserved.

    I've got a small fondness for the RF&P and I have a few DVD's featuring their motive power. While it may only take up like 8 minutes of runtime across all of the train dvd's I own, its still an interesting line. Also Ik RF&P and ACL diesels were leased to the N&W which bumped the J's from passenger service in late 1950's.

    • @johnstone2647
      @johnstone2647 Před rokem

      SW1200's 84 and 85 had standard AAR type "A" trucks and were not equipped with ATC (cab signals) for road service. They also didn't have MU capability until the mid-late 80's. 81-83 were equipped with flexicoil trucks, ATC and MU and could be used on the road. SW1500 91 was also so equipped.

    Ah, yes, RF&P park in Henrico County.
    It’s right next to Meadow Farm, which is where I went a lot as a kid for living history events and the Civil War Reenactment they used to have there.
    Also, RF&P is one of the few pre-war railroad lines still in operation today.
    One example is the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad, which was a railway line running south from Richmond to the city of Petersburg. The main depot was photographed by Matthew Brady and his photography team shortly after the Fall of Richmond where Brady and some other men pose in front of a ruined Baldwin Locomotive owned by the railway in the pre-war years. It was merged into the Atlantic Coast Line in 1898.
    Another one would be the Richmond and York River Railroad, which is the railroad that’s often featured in Civil War Photography (particularly anything related to Savage’s Station). It was later bought up by Southern Railroad and was connected up to the Richmond and Danville Railroad line, forming the ground level line of the famous Triple Crossing.
