The St. Clair Tunnel Company's One Of A Kind Locomotives

  • The St. Clair Tunnel Company was a small, yet border crossing railroad subsidiary that hosted a small variety of unique steam and electric locomotives. The needs of this railroad were rather specific, shuttle freight and passenger trains from Port Huron, Michigan in the United States, to Sarnia, Ontario in Canada with 2% gradients leading into the St. Clair River Tunnel underneath the St. Clair River. Strong and heavy motive power was going to be needed for the job. From 0-10-0T camelback tank engines, to boxcab electrics, this is the story of the St. Clair Tunnel Company and its unique locomotives.

    I’m so glad you covered the St Clair tunnel locomotives such a niche railroad in the state of Michigan yet such a small yet interesting roster. Very nice video!

    What a lovely and informative video! One could only wonder if the St. Clair Tunnel Company would have been more financially successful if they had stopped spending so much time renumbering their engines!

    grew up about 1/2 mile from the tunnel and my dad, an uncle and their dad worked about 125 years (combined) in the Port Huron Car Shops. my dad would sometimes hop on a train coming out of the tunnel and ride it back into the yards (he did inspecting for 18 years and walked from 16th street to the western border of the yards)

    As a Sarnian, it's nice seeing the city get some attention, especially with its unique railway history! Fun fact, there is still an actively used spur that cuts directly through Sarnia's waterfront parks, which is directly connected to the track used by the tunnel!

    Love to see the 0-10-0T's get attention. They were pretty much one-off's, but Baldwin used the design quite heavily in advertising. An odd design for an odd job, love it!

    I was really surprised when I first read about this company - an electric railroad, in Michigan?! I've always wanted to find out more, so this was a great video! In a similar vein, based on some pictures from one of your previous videos, Michigan Central Station and the Detroit River Tunnel were third-rail electrified.

    • @JohnGeorgeBauerBuis
      @JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Před 2 lety +2

      Those were not the only electric operations in Michigan, either, there was also the Michigan Electric, which was an interurban line using both third rail and overhead wire with trolley poles, with some street running.

    • @TrinityShoji
      @TrinityShoji Před 2 lety

      Look up the DT&I sometime. Henry Ford had the line electrified to serve River Rouge, and since the catenaries were built from concrete, they're still there, albeit the wires are long gone. You can see them from I-94 if you're going from downtown Detroit to Metro Airport

    • @emjeebutterz4405
      @emjeebutterz4405 Před 2 lety

      @@TrinityShoji Oh right, the DT&I is another one! It intrigues me how widespread electric railroading was in an earlier time.. living in Detroit, my younger self used to think that the Northeast Corridor was the US's first and only electric rail line.

    Awesome video. I lived in Sarnia when going to Lambton College's Railway Conductor program. We talked a lot about the tunnels since one instructor was a 37 year CP veteran engineer and when he worked out of London he made a lot of interchanges with CSX in Detroit, through the tunnel between Windsor and Detroit.

    And then those modern CN trains go on to disrupt car traffic parallel to Gratiot, all the way into Detroit. I always thought it was interesting that Richmond and New Haven were basically built on that specific line, like literally the dead center of both towns. I actually purchased a car from a used car dealer that rents part of the old grain elevator in New Haven, you should go check it out sometime. Also it'd be interesting to see a video on more of that line as it travels through southeast Michigan, I'd argue its possibly the most disruptive line in the state as far as interrupting traffic goes.

    Very good video but a couple of corrections/additions: The renumbering was 1305 to 1310 > 2655 to 2660 but in 1923 was done in reverse order 9150 ex 2660 to 9155 ex 2655 The last electric operation was September 28 1958 and the new tunnel opened April 5 1995, not 1994 (Canadian Rail Magazine Issue 446)

    Diesel exhaust in tunnels is no fun -- I remember this from the tunnels into Back Bay Station in Boston before completion of Northeast Corridor electrification from New Haven to Boston(*), and from Grand Central Station in New York in the 1980s, when the station was full of diesel smoke because of FL9s running on diesel power instead of the 3rd rail electric power they were supposed to run on, plus E units even being run into the station for a short period (although I don't know if that coincided with my visit).
    (*)And Back Bay Station still has this problem, because the MBTA refuses to electrify their Commuter Rail.

    • @spartan117zm
      @spartan117zm Před 2 lety +1

      This reminds me of wanting to slap whichever genius decided that work trains in the NYC subway should be diesel powered. Every time one passes through the station you’re in you’ll feel your lungs burn for a good few minutes after. Meanwhile there’s been battery-electric equipment in existence in small trains like these for decades (I get that the work trains can’t be powered by the third rail since usually when there’s a work train it means the third rail is off for whatever they’re doing).
