  • 1957 Excello mower survivor. Fully restored and functioning. Found stored in a crawlspace, untouched for years. Five decades worth of years!! Don't want to mow the lawn with it, though I suppose I could.

Great job. I’ve been doing this for 50 years. Great job.

Beautiful restoration, it looks like an advertisement you would see in a 50s popular mechanics magazine .

Really nice restoration job. I know that that offset wheel pattern was real popular with Lawn Boy mowers also.

We had a craftsman with a similar body from about 1954 albeit with chain drive. On our unit the grass separators or "teeth" at the leading edge of the body were painted red. Thanks for a wonderful job and the memory jog. Narragansett Bay.

The deck and wheel setup looks like a Lawnboy mower.

I don't blame you for not wanting to mow with it because parts for the mower are obviously obsolete.
I've got an old 4 HP Supa Swift (Big Bob) lawnmower which was made in 1985,it needs a complete rebuild & I have to chase up another camshaft because its bent & another can follower because it snapped.
That was caused by a stuck inlet valve which needs replacing (its face is badly pitted) which jammed up due to a Lack of oil.
I'm pretty sure my old neighbour who threw it out probably just couldn't keep oil up to it & it drank itself dry,I'm pretty sure it just needs new rings as they have a 2mm ring gap & the cylinder is still good.
The original rings ,camshaft & follower are no longer available as OEM parts through Briggs & Stratton rather as either used parts or from new old stock on EBay & elsewhere online.
The rings I can probably get aftermarket or there are a couple of different part numbers which supersede the original part numbers, they are still available.

That's a nice old mower. You went to a WHOLE lot more trouble fixing yours up than I did. Of course, since mine didn't have the original engine, I doubt it has much value to anyone other than me and my Bro In Law.

Very nice. I have quite a few mowers I'll be restoring and using, I have an early 70's 2 stroke 160cc Victa I use as my regular mower, the power that thing makes is incredible, it will go through tall, wet, thick grass, I love it. I will first be restoring a Rover 4 stroke self propelled, which will be my regular mower though. I'd love to get a reel type too. One day. I'd rather have 4 old mowers than 1 new one though.

Yes. the deck is cast aluminum and the handles are thick wall steel tubing.

That’s because a lot of them are tried and proven designs, and the manufacturers just didn’t change them.

Well done! Fresh off the assembly line! You really should cut the grass with it at least once just to see how it does! You can always wash it when you're done!

Wow, beautiful job! Surprised it says Lauson / Tecumseh that early on, must've been from when Tecumseh just bought Lauson Power Products. Gorgeous mower! Edit: Forgot to mention the deck design looks strikingly similar to the old Cooper Cyclo-Mow that I had decades ago, wonder if they’re related?

I just found one. Honestly, I don't even think it needs restored... just cleaned... grass clumps and fairly clean-looking oil spilled out... NOW WHAT??? lol
