I have most all the patterns I have ever bought. Many are from the 1950's. I buy used patterns all the time at yard sales and fabric too. I just got two big Rubbermaid totes full of fabric. I am excited to start sewing again. I am 88 years old.

I have saved and remade a few patterns, especially a cotton robe. I've made it 4 times for myself and even once for my dad! Got sticker shock the last time I looked in catalogs!!

Yes, I only ever buy them on sale!

Actually- rayon predates many fabrics, having been developed in response to war era conservation of natural fibers for troops. My aunt gave me several of her rayon blouses from the early 1940s and they were a dream to wear. It was a good dupe for silk back in the days when silk was needed for parachutes!

Oh interesting! I wonder why people fell so hard for polyester in the 70s, was it inexpensive?

What a fun and informative video! I love the blouse your wearing. I could kick myself because at a garage sale a few years ago, they were selling a whole big box of Vogue patterns (I don't even recall if they were old or new). I didn't buy the whole box and still regret it.

What a blast from the past! I sewed the Butterick 3953 blouse multiple times in the 70's. I still have it, but I no longer fit it. LOL I love how your blouse turned out!

Years ago the pattern companies changed the sizing of patterns. So the really old ones and the old/vintage are actually sized different. So definitely need to do a lot of measurements before cutting out.

Interesting! Any idea when they changed? I’ve so far only used as old as the 70s and the sizing is the same as my modern patterns, so it must have been before that?

Thanks, Nikki, for permission to cut! I’ve seen so many folks trace, and that just seems like a pain to me, then I leave off a notch and can’t match the pieces! Argh! Love your new hair - so cute! And I might try an older patter, because there’s so much ease in some of the new ones, it looks like a sack!

I trace because I have to. I change sizes like the seasons.

Unfortunately thrift stores are not selling patterns. I don’t know why but after covid I can’t find them anymore. Some reproduction patterns are horrid. They changed them and not for the better.

I trace. I don't cut anymore because in Canada patterns are so very expensive.

Interesting video! I remember seeing a big package of old patterns at the thrift store a few months ago and you could only see the first pattern! I didn’t get it because I didn’t want to spend my money on something I couldn’t see.
Does a muslin still work if the recommended fabric is a stretch knit?
I think your blouse is adorable!

It is annoying when they package them like that! If I’m super curious, I tear the plastic just a tiny bit haha.
