Making More From Less - Why a Small D&D House Can Be Better.

- Crafting an XPS foam (D&D) house seems a rite of passage for crafting, especially for tabletop gaming and wargaming, but also for other crafting goals like a fairy gardens. D&D is obviously my main focus here, but because this is all modular terrain, it can work well for a lot more than that :)
The main idea with showing the difference between a large and small D&D house here is both that you don't need to make much to get started, but also that if you make that small start modular, you can keep using it in larger crafts.
Equally, if you've built a ton of tiles for bigger buildings or houses, a few new tiles can give those walls and floors a ton more uses, and look far more detailed as a larger house to boot.

Measurements:
The initial roof tile blanks (the ones I cut two parallel angles into at the start) - 3"x4", 1/2" thick. The 4" is to give you room to cut the angles :)
As some people seem to have gotten a bit confused (my bad!), when I say measure down 2 and 13/16", I mean from the first angle you cut, to the side directly opposite. it doesnt matter whether you measure from the pointy bit or the less sharp angled bit - the angles will be parallel so it'll be the same distance from both to the other side :)
Blue painting:
This is the exact mix and method I used to get the blue roof - feel free to use different paints, but honestly different brands can vary so much in tone and opacity, if you don't use the same paints it's hard for me to say the result will be similar :)
I started with a 1:1 mix of daler rowney phthalo blue to mod podge
Then paint 1/2 the tiles with a mix of blue and white shown below, and the other half with the other mix
It's good to leave a bit of the basecoat in the shadows of the tile above, and thin the paint with water a bit (about a 1:1 ratio) otherwise it'll be too strong/bright for the drybrush to show well.
4:1 phthalo blue to white (dark)
2:1 phthalo blue to white (light)
Then drybrush with 1:1 phthalo blue to white along the bottom edges of the tiles mainly, keeping it gentle so it shows up against the basecoats but doesn’t overwhelm it. I also gave a lighter drybrush over the whole of the tiles (except the shadowed bits) to pick out the details a little. Basically you want the bottom of the tile brighter/more drybrushed than the rest :)
Tin safety tips:
Wear thick gloves (I use woodcutting gloves)
Cut with scissors - use cheap ones, they will get wrecked for other uses…
Use a metal nail file to file down the edges to be less sharp
I don't always bother filing down the tin when it is going to be hidden/not touched very much, but that is MY risk to take. I do not advise you do this, and having warned you I do not accept any responsibility for you doing so! Just so we're clear ;)

hi, awesome crafting. I was wondering what are the dimensions of these small magnets? Are 5x2mm (5mm diameter, 2mm thickness) good for this purpose? I've tried with 5x1mm ones they didn't quite work as good as I'd imagined. Mostly because my cuts with a crafting knife are not as precise as a hotwire table. But I thought a thicker magnet would help me with my sloppy cutting to offset my sloppiness.
Why would shingles be blue? Blue paint, presumably.
Blue shingles are a fantasy staple, everything from Warhammer to World of Warcraft and many more before...
But yes, painted. and if you wanted to get historical about it, people painted their houses and dyed their clothing a wide range of weird and wonderful colours in the various periods of the middle ages (as you've mentioned before on your channel).
I'm not exactly sure about rooftops, but it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for a fantasy world - catch the eye of the wizard on a flying carpet or druid in wildshape to drop down for a nice hot meal on his journey etc. Aerial advertising :)
Its surprising how many people paint their shingles blue. I finished some buildings and did exactly that... when I showed them off online no less than 5 people shared the same 3d printed building with the same color roof.
I imagine fantasy games like World of Warcraft helped influence this kind of thing in crafting. Historically I wonder if painting wooden roof tiles would help them last longer? I imagine if it ever did happen it was prohibitively expensive
Oh I think WoW certainly has an influence, it was too popular not to, its nostalgia for many (myself included)
As for the durability thing, it feels plausible, but I haven't looked into it enough to say :)

Maybe painted but I doubt it would be blue as that was generally a prohibitively expensive hue.
Could be paint, or there could be minerals with blue tints in the local geology in a much higher concentration than anywhere here on Earth
Could be a form of Cobalt, or one of many metals that turn blue when oxidised
Or it’s just magic

That's true, but there are easier projects on the channel :) start basic, build up - you get comfortable with it quite quickly once you get started

This is a great addition to your system as always. I have made a set of your floor tiles but decided to try and use only larger 5mm magnets for attachment. They have a much stronger pull force (~1.5 lbs vs. ~.9 lbs) I used PVA glue to attach them as I feel it makes a stronger bond, but does take much longer to fully cure. Moderate tugging with other 5mm magnets did not cause them to be pulled out of the foam once the glue was fully cured.
They might be a good way to get around the card system all together, but I don't have nearly enough pieces to test all possible scenarios. One down side is the 5mm magnets are more expensive than the 3mm and you need 8 per tile, so costs can add up quick.
Just some food for thought. Thank you for your videos. They are honestly what got me into this hobby and I have enjoyed every moment of it since.
Interesting. Might be worth it for a few tiles to use for wide upper floors, and just use 3mm for the rest?

You can temporarily make your shifting lands stay put by laying a bit of kitchen towel on the runner slot then pushing the guide into the slot, I doesn't make it immovable but I does need more than a knock to move it

Honestly it doesn't take up that much space, it all stacks quite well in my storage box - the building pieces only mostly fill one so far, and it's not even full!

I'm trying to replicate some stuff for our dnd terrain but I'm having a hard time with the main pieces. I don't know if I'm always missing the measures for the main pieces but I can't find them. Are the main pieces 3x3 inches before you cut the angles?
The main pieces of these roof tiles? I believe they were 3" wide, and a bit longer than 3" the other way - so I could cut the 45 degree angle 2 and 13/16" down one side :)

I am concerned about the safety of XPS foam, like with small particles and fumes, Is it safe to cut?
Note: I do not have a hotwire cutter at this time, only knives
It is safe to cut if you keep the area ventilated. From what I understand the fumes released aren't toxic persay (unless you burn and blacken the foam), its just enough to make you a bit light headed. Again, from what I understand. I am not an expert on this matter :)

I've been trying to work with magnets for removable walls, but I've been having problems with the magnets pulling out of the foam/hot glue. First i create a hole, add hot glue, and then insert the magnet. I then add a little more hot glue to seal it in. However, after 1-2 uses it just rips right out of the hole. Am I using too powerful of magnets (they look just like yours), or am I missing something here?
Are they 3mm wide 2mm deep? If so they shouldn't be stronger than mine.
The problem is more than likely your glue gun/the hole you make - I'm going to be talking about this in my upcoming beginner tips video :)
The absolute best way to do it is use the surebonder glue gun I link in the equipment list. It's nozzle is a perfect size to push in a magnet sized hole, which then grips the magnet with pressured, elastic foam - not solid, inflexible glue :)
A quick and dirty solution is to just make sure the hole is filled with hot glue and there's still space for the magnet, and superglue it back in. The hot glue should protect the foam from the superglue :)

It very clever system you got going I don't Do the whole D&D stuff but I make models I will try and use some of your tips in future dioramas I like the foam tile idea I been using weetbix boxes for years cutting out individual tiles 🤣 What a idiot I was could have done them in strips.

@@RPArchiveOfficial thanks! You are amazing, however Dutchess Bronzefire is severely challenged when it comes to making square cuts. After struggling with cardboard and foamcore for floor tiles, I got some XPS foam from a construction site. A knife was a miserable failure, so a proxon was acquired. I’ve been trying to make foam blanks on my lunch at work to take home and texture and finish. I am desperate to actually make a building, so I watched the video to write out notes for the blanks to cut to begin making roof tiles. Now, I have watched the other roof videos, but I thought, Dutchess, wouldn’t a tiny roof be easier than those great big roofs? So… I am really at a loss as to what size tile I am starting with to make the large roof section. I presume 3” wide, but I don’t know how long the tile was before you started cutting the angles. The “down 2 3/16” really confuses me. Down from what? The extreme pointy edge of the tile, or the face up now shorter side where the angle left the original surface? The Dutchess then thought, “well, maybe if I make the end triangle it would make sense”. So…. Why is the blank to cut the triangles from 3 1/8…? Rewatching pieces of the other roof vids does not enlighten the Dutchess. Those are from tiles the same size as the wall on that end of the building. The trimming off of the points in the end of the roof slopes is super confusing when I’m still not sure how long those slopes were supposed to be. Is all this clear enough to explain the confusion and perhaps receive enlightenment? I really hope so. I’d like a sense of accomplishment that I’m currently not getting by waiting for nickel strips to arrive from China so I can mangle my floor blanks before installing magnets and making actual nice floors.

So, the length of the tile just needs to be large enough to accommodate the angled cut - That's my bad for not including it in the pinned comment! The pieces I used I believe were just over 3", but lets say 4" to be safe. Basically you need just enough larger to accommodate the angled cut :)
When I say measure down 2 and 13/16", it can be from either large flat facing, because the angled lines will be parallel, though I do see how that might be unclear! Measure directly away from your first cut, towards the opposite side of the tile. and 13/16" is important! it's definitely not 3/16" :)
The wall is cut from a 3 and 1/8" black tile basically because I initially made it using a 3" tile...and it was too small :) I can't remember exactly why... but it was, hence the size getting a bit bigger! I think it might have been something to do with the walls not quite connecting to the magnets on the bottom, and there being a small gap there...not sure why, I can't quite remember!
For the trimming off the points bit - do you mean where you cut off the sharp edge, or where you can optionally cut off 1/2" to make the edge detachable to use to make larger roof pieces?
