    Great presentation and overview, now we need Ben to do an interview with the makers :-) Noy my personal choice of acoustic sound but they will sell well. The Sheeran name on a guitar comparable with the high PRS SE acoustics? They did do an excellent job on the built in electrics, sound very similar miked or through amp.

    I own a high end Lowden and although it’s not my favourite guitar it just does something special, there’s a Lowden sound that is glorious. These on the other hand are dreadful, thin, rattly little tin cans. To think for similar money you could buy a Maton Srs60 or Performer. Or an Eastman. Or a low end Furch or a Faith. I simply cannot believe George Lowden put his name on these.

      BUT I PREFERRED THE SMALL SHEERAN GUITARS BEST HERE & MAINLY THE 1ST ONE...

    I’m surprised by the amount of people that appear to have never heard of Lowden guitars. They’re hand built in County Down and have been going for decades...they also sell for thousands! Don’t judge the brand on these...although the fact they’re trying to keep an “affordable” line under £1000 should tell you something about their core instruments.

      I bought my first Lowden guitar in 1992 from the Guitar Shop in Washington, DC. It was a jumbo Cedar top Walnut back and sides. I outfitted it with a double paddle Fishman pick up under the bridge. It kicked butt in performance and even better in the recording studio. Beautifully balanced midrange and a bass resonance that I could feel down to my knees. It was a masterpiece by George Lowden. I had to trade to smaller bodied Taylor guitars because of torn rotator cuff, but these smaller Lowden guitars are looking just right.

    Interesting thing about these- George Lowden wanted create a value line of guitars under a different label than his namesake brand because he didn't want to compromise the Lowden brand. Ed Sheeran partnered with him and this value lineup was born so that newcomers could have an affordable quality guitar, built in the UK by one of the top guitar builders in the world. But... It's a value line of product. Much in the same way that you don't get the quality of Martin D18 out of one of Ed Sheeran's signature Little Martins.

I guess this size & style suits the Sheeran persona & the name will attract some purchases. Don't think I will be chopping in the GS Mini, the Sigma GMC-STE the Faith PJE Legacy or the Mahogany Neptune any time soon for one of these. Great playing as always & a good demo.

    @larrydunn4626 Pƙed 4 lety +6

    First, I commend you for keeping a straight face while playing these dreadful sounding thunky wooden-ish things. And you played well.
    ................
    you did ask which was the favorite. S02, S04, W02. All the cedar tops sounded like they were lacking bass and playing through a pickup -- buzzy, fuzzy, overdriven type sound, even without using the pickup and into the mic. Truly dreadful sound. Massive fail. The spruce tops ameliorated that to some extent, but bottom line they're just not that pleasing sounding... especially when you've got Eastman for a more modern Martin style sound and Blueridge (eg. BR143 - 14 fret 000 size, about $600 US without case) for a more prewar, lively Martin type sound, at 65% or less the price of these.
    What we don't know is WHY Lowden agreed to do this. Increase employment in NI? get a higher % of return than the very laborious hand made guitars get (essentially selling out)? For whatever reason, I don't think the gamble will or has paid off. I doubt that AFTER the pre-sale orders are fulfilled, and everyone gets to hear them in person, they sell 25% of what they thought they would going forward. The fact that Lowden allowed this to go forward, after learning how rubbish they sound after all, means they don't think it will damage their brand of hand made custom guitars... I think they're wrong.
    I'm listening through Sennheiser HD660s.

    Aye. Thank you, Ben

    I asked you once what thumb pick you use and you were kind enough to answer. Thank you
    I've always liked finger picking acoustic guitars but have never, in 40 plus years, gotten the hang of using a thumb pick. Some of my favorite electric guitarists use them as well, but I find them uncomfortable and ungainly to use. I love the aggressive attack of a thumb pick,with the freedom of use of my other fingers but can't figure out the clumsiness of that bit of nylon on my thumb
    Can you give us some tips?

    • @odinogle
      @odinogle Pƙed 4 lety

      David Cummings have you tried different sizes of thumb pick? Might fit your thumb better. You do get used to them after a while, but if they're too uncomfortable you could try hybrid picking, where you hold the pick with your thumb and index finger whilst pick with your remaining three finger. This also takes some getting used to though.

      I think you're wrong. Fact 1, If you look at the price of the used martins with the Sheeran monicker some people have been playing these guitars for ten year and then made a couple of hundred on the original price. Secondly they're selling by the truckload already. Third point as was the original concept is that Ed Sheeran wanted to make an affordable guitar for people, possibly young people, from a top manufacturer. He did it with Martin. Now Lowden. Imho they sound great. Also, Imho guitar shops want you to buy things that don't necessarily have the best interests of the player as key. I've watched it happen in front of my own eyes, some of the guitars they sell are crap, the only thing as high s the profit margin is the action. While I'm having a rant, I'm going to add that a lot of people who knock this range of guitars are people who have a Lowden and don't want their brand to be sullied with a guitar for ,$600, de valuing their investment and exclusivity. Answer me this question honestly. Why would you consider this line. Big mistake for Lowden? What's your interest in writing this comment. I'd assume you played them?
      Best regards,
      George.
