    ENGLISH LYRICS:
    A lifetime of war
I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to fight
    And the world burned
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?
Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time
    Far from home
    Baptized and die in battle
    And the world burned
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?
And when my time runs out
    Who cares then?
    They fight on
Does a soldier get a worthy end?
    To fall asleep
    Pass away
    And never wake up
    For war it can
    Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
    But who will mourn me?
    So see me as
    A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
    But who will miss me?

As a swede i can assure you that the english translation on the video are spot on. (unlike the english version that changes the story a bit). That makes it wild to me, how hard this cuts and how poetic the swedish can be sometimes, to tell such a story in lyrics, which has to have a certain rhythm and cadence.

    • @494Farrell
      @494Farrell Před 6 měsíci +3

The English version is a good listen and has its own place talking about the tragedy of the overall conflict. But this one just hits different, so much more impactful and personal, and this performance is just incredible, the chorus with just drums and clapping is one the most powerful bits of music have ever listened to.

The best music lecture I ever went to was on Arnold Schönberg's String Trio. It involved a string trio playing the piece then the lecturer giving a lecture with the trio playing excerpts then a second play through.
The amazing thing was there were SEVEN students in the auditorium and that included me who wasn't a music student.
So playing the full song again has a great pedigree in my books.

I have been in the crowd for this song at least 5 times, i can say the hit in the feels is different live, you don't well up in the eyes, you well up with pride that you and several thousand others are basically singing praise for fallen warriors of any time really. This is why sabaton is special, i have been to their own festival 5 times and each time they played this, people from so many different countries sang this in swedish.
Also, Joakim (the singer) does not have to sing a SINGLE word in this song, if you just listen just a little you can hear how the crowd NEVER stops singing. It is amazing live.

One of the best reactions I have seen. The interaction with the crowd in this song is electric and immense. Sabaton has the rare ability to reach into your soul, pressing all the emotional buttons, making you feel pride and sadness for those who sacrificed all for their homelands. I saw them at the Ryman in Nashville, and they didn't play "En Livstid i Krig" but they did play "Gott Mitt Uns" in Swedish. We didn't do a very good job singing along though. best concert I ever attended. (Epica was awesome as well).

Samaltau by Dimash is also sung from the perspective of a soldier who doesn’t know if he will ever see his country again. There are also additional circumstances, but similar emotions. The song is also hauntingly beautiful and sad.

Just before this clip started Joakim said no one carries around a lighter anymore but you all have phones right? So turn on your lights for this one. Then at the start he said totally wounderful, my friends, let's sing together en livstid i krig. Ahem. Winged Hussars? Siege of Vienna wasn't an entirely insignificant moment in history.

The thing with this song is: listening to the English version of the song, it takes an Objective view of the 30 year war. Now, if you choose to go for the Swedish version of the same song, it tells the story of your average Swedish conscripted soldier, which makes the whole thing so much more Subjective. And That is what makes the song so much more powerful and hits you on the feels on a whole different level when sung in Swedish.

Sorry if I also might add that all of the journeys rabbit holes we are on at the moment honestly I've never heard of any of the bands or artists including Sabotan.. I'll admit some of the journeys and types of music wouldn't be for me but we all can't like the same thing but I will say this I will listen to them and even if it takes a couple or several songs that I hear that's what it could take for me to say ohh this is different I like this ..all I'm trying to say is my ears are open for it all no harm in listening if it doesn't appeal to me it doesn't but I will as I said take the time to listen I mean no disrespect to anyone we are a community from all different styles of music let's enjoy it
