    Hello Shelby, I believe that the opening in the back will slip over a nail that is in the wall. I think that they would be well supported and hang flush with the wall. It is nice to see all the different versions and I am confidant that you will learn how to fix the cracking issue. We all can be hard on ourselves when things do not react the way we expect, but this is how we grow. Thanks for the hard work you do for these videos and for taking us along on the journey.

      @deadphoenixrising Před rokem +45

      As someone that has the 3 flying ducks on the wall this is exactly how you hang them. You hammer a nail or put a screw into the wall and then the little round hole slips over the end of the screw/nail so they are flush to the wall. I also think there is a special type of hook you can get to hang them from drywall.

    • @someonedifferent198
      @someonedifferent198 Před rokem +9

      Was thinking the same thing, a nail or a hook are often used to hang something like that "invisible". Sadly not a potter so no advise about the cracking. The birds are very cute though!!

    Shelby I used to pour these you need to pour much lighter drain sooner the head to wing crack is possibly an air gap in the head but mostly due to head being full. Then get the mold open to set up and then add wing when it is formed wings also need to drain and poke a hole into the body where they join.

  • @LoveMeCeramics
    @LoveMeCeramics Před rokem +92

    I have some roosters that hang the same way…all you need is to tap a nail angled upwards and they will sit flush on the wall. I’m restarting my grandmother’s ceramic business and absolutely love watching your mistakes and experiences with your work! You give me confidence that everything will be okay and I will make my grandmother proud. Thank you Shelby! ❤

  • @JulieRansom
    @JulieRansom Před rokem +16

    I think the cracking problem could be fixed by taking the birds out of the molds sooner. If too much shrinking occurs while the clay is in the mold and part of the mold interferes with the clay's ability to shrink without being stressed it could result in cracking (especially in that curve where the wing attaches to the body). I also slip cast and have found that that usually solves the problem. Good luck!

      I agree with the notion of reinforcing the hanging method. Adding a hanger with more options for angles and direction will give you lots of choices and the confidence that all of your hard (hard!) work won’t come crashing to the floor! Like other commenters I had to google up some photos and the pics show the pink as very vibrant. You’ll get the glaze right. Test tiles may be the ticket since the birds are so so delicate?

    I know you weren't too happy with these, but I think they're fantastic! I love the vintage flying birds. I'm not a slipcaster but I do work with clay... I think you're right that there's some sort of tension causing the cracking. I wonder if just taking some extra time to compress the spot would help. That or maybe adding a bit of extra clay in the spot to support it. As for the hanging, maybe a couple of holes on the back that you could string a wire through? Just suggestions! Love the video, as usual, especially your commentary at the end when trying to hang the birds. You're an expert at the "Australian No".😆

    I think what may help with the cracking is when you're letting them get to leather hard, have them dry more slowly. That spot is really thin compared to the rest of the piece. I think it may be drying too quickly, but not enough to where it's cracking before you fire it; but it's introducing enough stress so that it cracks when you do fire it.

    In terms of hanging, I have a few ideas: If the hole is hollow enough, you could thread something through to the other hole and tie it up. Or you could have... Something like a stick with a loop, that you could insert in a hole and then it clings to the back and because its broader than the hole, it would hold? What about hooks on top before bisquing? Or just a nail in the wall? There are other nail like hangings and hooks, that go into the wall, where you can just hang things from.

    The cracking would bother anyone who works with clay. From what I remember, cracking happens because of air bubbles, drying speed, or joining the wing. Maybe the clay is too thin right there too. Many don't realize these flaws take away the value of the piece too. I worked with clay a long time ago in college and have made my own mold aming other things. Cracking happened there during a raku fire and rather mysteriously on this gentleman'd piece who neither him nor the professor could figure out why. Its a real artform that has it's dissapontments. I had an instructor who threw away pieces by slamming them into a metal trash can breaking them. It was so dramatic and she was so talented, most of us didn't get it. You're good natured about it. And I like this series.❤ From Texas USA 🤠🇺🇸

    You are so pro! I mean how you pay attention to every detail, like the eye that you think needs to be slightly less prominent. I'm sure you will work out the crack issue and the hanging method and find the the coloring that transmits your vision in the best way. I don't have a favorite yet. What a coincidence, by the way, as I have been watching some parrot videos lately (Gizmo, the African grey is my favorite of those).

    I love these, I’m sorry you had such a hard time with them. We had a set of flying swallows on the wall when I was a kid. They were black and gold and possibly cast metal. These are so beautiful and colourful 💖💖💖

    I have never seen a Galah, I love your enthusiasm for Australian nature. The brighter ones remind me of flamingo tourist pottery from the 1960’s. Not necessarily nature accurate, but a beautiful decor addition. The trio of primary colors are my favorite and could see them in nursery design with primary colors. I would not allow the crack to dim your enthusiasm for these, painting them to match their real counterparts can be a work in progress. If you get a chance to show us your inspiration plants and birds it would be lovely. Cheers from the Midwest USA 💜

    I bought a ceramic wall art piece once, and on the backside it was a permanent patch/sticker with a small metal ring to hang on a nail. I have seen them in shops where they sell frames and home repair stuff.

    To hang them just look for plate hangers. The ones that have an adhesive back, which I'm sure you epoxy, and a metal triangle. You can usually find them on different sizes. Cute birds.

    Yeah I slip cast a lot too. Where you're getting those cracks is a narrow point in the mould. When its drying its contracting and you're getting tiny hairline cracks that open up when you fire them. Its also possible that because of the shape the moisture is being pulled out by the plaster a little unevenly, so this area is drying faster and making the problem worse. You could try pulling them from the mould a bit sooner than you usually would, but I don't know if you'd then get warping.

    I’ve seen doves like this but they were applied to a flat planter front. I’ve also seen the doves, which have the wings just like those, applied to pillars around the top and to a ceiling medallion. As a 3D ornament and they were glued. And E6000 is a great glue for the hooks

    Beautiful colors and design. The hole in the back is supposed to fit over a nail in the wall so the bird hugs the wall.

    In NZ we do use blutack to stick ornaments down in case of earthquakes, so hopefully the birds stayed up a while with blutack in their backs

    Can't speak for the gallahs, but the ducks are weighted so the nail in the wall (that everyone has suggested) hangs them at the perfect angle. I love these. I love seeing all the versions of the duck on a wall. Crown Lynne in NZ did some copies of the ducks, as well as a set of swallows and I think a couple of other birds. I adore the *ducks on the wall but make them not ducks* aesthetic so much!
    My initial reaction to the purple guy was also "argh!" But I think it was just because it was among the galah coloured galahs. As a set I love the pop colour ones... but maybe wouldn't put them somewhere they could stare into my soul for too long at a time...😅
