Morphine was an American alternative rock group formed by Mark Sandman and Dana Colley in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1989. They disbanded in 1999 after frontman Sandman died of a heart attack.

Mark Sandman, thank you, wherever you are. I discovered the band in early 2000's, I was very depressed and it was like a cure for pain but over a decade later, I rediscovered my once favourite cool post-punk jazz Morphine to actually be an amazing music to make love to beautiful women and while seeing her wilderness. to succumb to the magnificent beauty and temptation of Nature herself. It is magic.

I loved this band. Never got to see them live, but I did get the privilege of seeing Dana Colley play out with some local musicians in my hometown.
Not easy to make a 3 piece band hold people's attention. Morphine accomplishes it with ease.
Nirvana did a fab job with that also.

Discovered Morphine recently,with the "Like Swimming" album and being totally fascinated with middle eastern music for some time already...and this song is just a perfection
It's a shame how it turned out for dear old Mark, but I can't think of a better song he could have signed off with. "The Night" was a righteous masterpiece and a brilliant final chapter to his life's work.

Well the Morphine band is composed only of 4 musicians a bassist a drummer a percussionist and Dana Colley with Sax but you can hear clearly at 1:43 4:16 and 4:48 a Oud sound i just wanted to know who played this eastern melodies I guess it's impossible to be realized with the standard Morphine instruments and musicians

Impossible dude it's a typical Oud sound I can hear the percussion of it's typical pelectrum specially at 4:48... this is a real Oud solo or "Taqsim"

Correction- Morphine is a three piece. Sandman, Colley, and Whoever was playing drums at the time.

I feel the same way. Been listening to this stuff since it came out in 2000, and I'm still just as mystified by how he put these incredible songs together. The imagery and simple poetry of it all are too damn good, then match it with that music and that voice...perfect.
