Same here, I'm turning 45 and I was lucky to see them live at Roseland. Another band for me is Pantera, I saw them in 97, opening act for Kiss, in Santiago Chile and then back in 98, Santiago again for their 101 Proof tour.
This is and was a criminally underrated song, by a very underrated band.. I still have the original cd. Absolutely beautiful. I even remember who introduced me to this band.

I was a metalhead that time, came home deadly drunk in 90's. Immidiately gone to bed. My brother started to play this cd. I remember myself listening it for the first time, telling myself what a great music it was. I was totally fascinated. Still the best.
The amount of rockers and metallers who like Portishead is astounding. My mate a huge Metallica head played me this back in 95 and it’s remained the best album I’ve ever heard since
I was a hard Slayer/Sepultura/Metallica fan when this came out. It was this year that my tastes started to change. I began to listen to more Pink Floyd, Ozric Tentacles, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and of course Portishead to name a few. Sometimes being fixed into one scene makes you miss so much. Luckily some music breaks the barriers and forces you to listen. And it's usually worth it.
Why were the 90's such an incredible time for music.. Those of us who were teenagers in the 90's were incredibly lucky, so many amazing, trailblazing bands, in every genre . I'll be forever grateful I was a 90's kid, proud to be of the MTV generation 😆 For all it's faults, it gave me the gift of discovering bands I would otherwise never have, thanks to programs like 120 minutes and many others. Thank u MTV, and thank u glorious 90's ❤
This song & Requiem for a Dream made me run fast for my life, one life saved in those troubled teenage years. Now 10 years later looking backwards after many ups and downs I can say it proudly, i made it and it was more than worth it. This unravel you at your core. doesnt matter how thick your walls are. it hits you right in the feels. No other song portrays the fragile nature of a soul as accurate at this. The tremor in her voice is a perfect match to the song. So vunerable that a gust of wind would chatter her beeing. Amazing.

One of the few bands where the singers voice was even more impressive in person than on the studio albums. Saw them at coachella quite a few years back, truly beautiful.
How I loved the 90s. The culture was so varied, so exciting, especially the music. It felt like the days of racism, sexism etc were on their way out, and we were at the beginning of something great for humanity. We were so wrong. I would give anything to be back there at that time.
There is no such music cultures now as it was back then unfortunately. Look at the grunge scene, triphop, even electronic bands like The Prodigy were huge. There is hardly anything as diverse sub cultures nowadays unfortunately.
If you are an old school video game player at all, you should give the TPR channel a listen. Really hits the spot for something "different". Especially the Final Fantasy 6, 7, and Chrono Trigger albums.

Absolutely love it.. many years later and it still gives me goosebumps! I remember the day I first heard Portishead, playing in a weird lil shop in a side street somewhere in downtown Orlando.. back in 1998.. I was working in the US for a year from hometown Johannesburg, South Africa. I remember the smell of the shop, the assistance behind the counter and even some of the goods on the counter (smiley face pinups!) .. this music was and is part of so many days in my life!
Back in 2007ish it was shown on free tv in Australia late at night and I was waiting to go get a red eye flight but I cannot forget the music. Fantastic

I often remember past times by the feeling in the air. It fascinates me to think that despite photos etc we can never know that feel of the atmosphere in history. You’re right, the 90s had a quality, even though they were somehow less well known than the 80s.
This song always hits me. So many moments have been accompanied by the "Dummy" album. 25 Years later I sit here, in this moment........ having the feels.
Beth Gibbon’s voice has always made me feel at home. She has a way of drawing you in so that you are so undeniably connected to her consciousness that you start to forget yourself. It’s a unique form of intimacy that she shares with you freely. I experience this with some musicians and their instruments, but she captures it in a way that is beyond anyone else.
Yup, I absolutely love Portishead's cover of ABBA's song "SOS." Not many people can turn a really happy upbeat song into some dark brutal emotional version that destroys you at the very core like Portishead. There'll never be like another band as good as the extremely talented Portishead.
I'm too guarded. I would never be a vocalist. I could never let myself be so vulnerable. Over the years I have come to respect singers for their courage to express emotion.
You know what it's unbelievable? To be 50 and to just discover Portishead !!! Man, it feels like a home I never knew I have... No, I don't recall the rock under which I lived in the 90's :))

"I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right." All I have to do is think of that line to get instantly choked up. From the way Beth sings, I sense a slight hint of trying to downplay the pain, but it still comes through like an emotional dagger. It feels so human.

So few bands will ever achieve making a perfect song, even fewer will achieve it at the rate Portishead did. Such a small catalog of songs and so many absolute gems.
Well said. This is a very special band. Not my time as I am a 57 man . I worked for a young funky South London girl back in 1996 and she made me aware of this band and I've loved them ever since.

I am 64 but I really like Portishead. I only discovered them whilst googling Portishead when our neighbours moved to said town ! Roads is absolutely awesome and Beth Gibbons puts such passion into it.
I remember being like 16 yrs old listening to them , I am 40 now! The memories this brings back is amazing 💕 Now I've introduced my 14 yr old daughter to them ❤

What a masterpiece. This is my favorite from Portishead.
How I loved the 90s. The culture was so varied, so exciting, especially the music. It felt like the days of racism, sexism etc were on their way out, and we were at the beginning of something great for humanity. We were so wrong. I would give anything to be back there at that time.
There is no such music cultures now as it was back then unfortunately. Look at the grunge scene, triphop, even electronic bands like The Prodigy were huge. There is hardly anything as diverse sub cultures nowadays unfortunately.

Absolutely love it.. many years later and it still gives me goosebumps! I remember the day I first heard Portishead, playing in a weird lil shop in a side street somewhere in downtown Orlando.. back in 1998.. I was working in the US for a year from hometown Johannesburg, South Africa. I remember the smell of the shop, the assistance behind the counter and even some of the goods on the counter (smiley face pinups!) .. this music was and is part of so many days in my life!
I listen to this song about every year or so I never want to over play it. It’s too good I love to savour this absolute masterpiece.

This song always hits me. So many moments have been accompanied by the "Dummy" album. 25 Years later I sit here, in this moment........ having the feels.
Beth Gibbon’s voice has always made me feel at home. She has a way of drawing you in so that you are so undeniably connected to her consciousness that you start to forget yourself. It’s a unique form of intimacy that she shares with you freely. I experience this with some musicians and their instruments, but she captures it in a way that is beyond anyone else.

Yup, I absolutely love Portishead's cover of ABBA's song "SOS." Not many people can turn a really happy upbeat song into some dark brutal emotional version that destroys you at the very core like Portishead. There'll never be like another band as good as the extremely talented Portishead.

All I have to do is think of that line to get instantly choked up. From the way Beth sings, I sense a slight hint of trying to downplay the pain, but it still comes through like an emotional dagger. It feels so human.
