  • From the album " The Night ".
    Lyrics:
First we'll pick Priscilla up. And then we'll stop for Jane.
And Mary Ellen needs a ride. We're going by her place.
We're going to a party. Our friends will all be there.
I got the directions. It's across the river somewhere.
We rang the top floor, bottom buzzer.
Top floor, bottom buzzer. Top floor, bottom buzzer.
The middle won't work. Ring the one under.
Priscilla's in the kitchen she's mixing drinks.
She's mixing one for me I think.
And one for Mary Ellen and one for Jane.
Priscilla, she knows how to use a shaker.
She doesn't get up as early as a baker. Uh huh.
There's a muchacha, teaching me to mambo.
There's my buddy Pete eyeing a bowl of combos.
Ramona and a man do a tango dip. Cheek to cheek, hip to hip, come on.
The window's open it's the heart of the summer.
More people coming looking for the number.
Mary Ellen sees them she has a little stutter. She yells...
T-top floor, b-bottom buzzer. Top floor, bottom buzzer.
Top floor, bottom buzzer. Top floor, bottom buzzer.
The middle won't work. Ring the one under. Come on. Woo.
It was later it was after two.
We found a bottle of good chartreuse.
The lights were green and gold. We played Latin soul.
By the time Priscilla put the Al Green on the bottle was gone.
On the top floor, bottom buzzer.
Top floor, bottom buzzer. Top floor, bottom buzzer.
The middle won't work. Ring the one under. Come on. Woo.
Top floor, bottom buzzer. Top floor, bottom buzzer.
Top floor, bottom buzzer. The middle won't work. Ring the one under. Come on. Woo.

Years ago I got a call from my daughter's 8th grade teacher when my girl was overheard at lunch declaring that she liked Morphine. In fact she went on, my whole family loves Morphine. My personal highlight of the day was explaining to the teacher that Morphine is a band.

Mark Sandman was such a talent.....I wish he didn't have to leave us so soon....but at least we can continue to listen to his gold....he was our Morphine, and he sure knew how to treat her right.

They were without a doubt the coolest band of the 90's....No I take that back... the Coolest of any time.

Glad I got to see them before Mark’s passing. Watching a man play two saxophones at once nearly melted my face.

......"She doesn't get up as early as a baker",....that verse always cracks me up, because my wife was a baker, in the 1980s. And she did in fact have to get up at 2AM to get to her baking job, at a gourmet Italian restaurant. She baked their breads, fancy cakes, & desserts. ( She was sweet to begin with, personality-wise.) When she returned home after her shift, she was even sweeter. (Delicately dusted in powdered sugar & all sticky from honey.)

My speakers are insanely expensive and this song blew most of the drivers in them. I spent a lot of time an money replacing those drivers myself. It was soooo worth it. Love these guys!

If you live in the Boston area and listen to 92.5 The River, they will occasionally play this song and tell the story about the actual party at one of their DJs' apartments in Cambridge that inspired it.

For some reason this reminds of my fun times in my youth, when I was in my early 30s in the 1980s. I was an artist, and all my friends were too. We pooled our money and rented the top floor in an old, 8 story, defunct, light manufacturing factory, built in 1900. The elevator was an industrial one, with open, wooden slat sides, and a slatted, manual pull-down door. It was large enough to hold a 1960s VW Beetle. To ascend & descend you had to manually pull a braided steel cable, located in an opening on one side of the elevator car. That action released counterweights & turned on an assist motor. You had to press a stop button, once you observed that the elevator floor, was aligned with floor you exiting to. As the car rose, you experienced rare views within the elevator shaft. We divided up the whole top floor into individual studios. The warehouse had 16 foot ceilings, and was 50 foot wide by 200 feet long. Approx.10 thousand square feet. The space was rented in "as is", condition with no improvements. The rent was dirt cheap because of it. However, there were working radiators, and even by that late period of time, (1980) the building's boiler was still fired by burning coal. We made our art there, held exhibitions, and wild parties.

I totally missed these guys in the '90's. But I love them now. Wish they were still around, we could use more music like this.

'Early to bed' is definitely the gateway drug to this incredible band. It's terrific. Sad the lead singer passed away.
