FINALLY! A VR headset that’s actually MADE FOR ME

  • I HAVE BEEN WAITING TWO YEARS FOR THIS. THIS IS THE BIG SCREEN BEYOND. Almost certainly the headset that will be replacing my Valve index.. but it's not entirely certain yet. Kind of crazy that BigScreen a primarily software company is getting into the hardware business.
    Fair warning though; this is NOT for everyone. This isn't some mainstream VR headset that is meant for all consumers; it's very niche and pretty much built to JUST BE the best PCVR headset possible. So.. I can respect that.
    If you have an Oculus Quest or Quest 2.. this probably just isn't for you. If you're a current index or Vive owner though.. well.. it just might be worth it.

      @@HeckinDoga Don't think so. In my Quest 2 I have magnetic prescription inserts. If I wear the headset with my glasses my eyes are a good distance away from the lenses. If I wear it without the glasses and use the inserts instead I can reduce that distance. I can't use the headset without inserts or glasses, so I really have no comparison to using it all by itself. But I don't think leaving the inserts out does very much to the FOV.

Being able to go through all of their services but not buy a actual headset is a win in my books. Yeah as long as you can order facial interfaces and lenses separately, I think this is a really awesome addition to the market. Most VR people are going to be enthusiasts who want the perfect custom solution, and often will ALSO have a standard solution like Index or Quest to introduce others to VR, so it really mostly applies to reselling, but also if you want one of these custom headests for multiple regular users, then you could just swap in and out your custom pieces as necessary, plus the modular nature of it gives room for tinkerers to make their own custom gaskets or whatever. Best displays in the space and a custom fit I think are BIG selling points even without those other considerations. The only thing that I would want in addition would be eye tracking for foveated rendering but also focus-based depth of field. Oh and wireless would be good, maybe through the use of a battery pack headstrap / wireless combo unit, to balance the weight and maintain that modularity

    • @EmblemParade
      @EmblemParade Před rokem +7

      The IPD is fixed per unit during manufacturing, so even though you can swap face molds and lenses, it would still be unusable if a person's IPD is too far off from that of the unit. Some people are really sensitive to IPD differences.

    • @WilliumBobCole
      @WilliumBobCole Před rokem +2

      @@EmblemParade ooh youre right, by the time I had formed my opinion, that part had flown over my head. That certainly makes reselling less convenient than I had first imagined, I mean I guess you could sell them WITH the IPD value listed, and trust that people would do so accurately and truthfully, and that buyers would know theirs and look for one that matches... I guess in my head the IPD was "adjustable maybe with a set screw but pre-set from factory to match your scan", which obviously there is no basis for. I still think this is a cool and good product, and I don't think resale potential should have too strong a bearing on that fact, but it certainly is A consideration that I had mis-considered, thanks for clarifying the point that I missed :)

    • @EmblemParade
      @EmblemParade Před rokem +1

      @@WilliumBobCole Yeah, I was also disappointed to learn that. I think they went too far on this. Would it really make the HMD much bigger if they added IPD adjustment? This thing is gonna truly push the boundary for PCVR headsets, and I'm totally here for it. Personally it'll be out of my price range or feature preferences to matter to me in this current iteration, but I'd love to see this with a slightest extra bulk later on wherein it's then capable of working with inside-out tracking exclusively for PCVR. Overall I'm supremely looking forward to future headsets aiming for this kind of form factor.
    All of you with Indexes that have been hungry for an HMD replacement are probably all ready to hop in though, which is amazing. Good point on "why tf do they need to be so bulky if it's just for the PC?" lol

    My suggestion for the company: Make the device modular, so some components can be resold and make it so that that only the parts that needs your measurements are needed and can be swapped on the fly. Decrease the price for the headset as time goes on, to make it more widespread and attractive to regular consumers. Also make the service which requires custom facial measurements separate as well, because our facial shape will change over time and eye prescriptions also change over time.

    imo its really dumb to do what they're doing. The price is pretty ridiculous for this device and it's mainly because of all these custom things they are doing. What they should be doing is selling the base headset much cheaper with an ipd slider and a more general face plate. Then they should be selling the more customized face plates separately as an addon for the people that really care about that or need it. I genuinely couldn't see myself spending almost $1500 CAD on a headset on its own, especially as someone with an index. I understand the standpoint of it being for people already in the steamvr space, but at the same time as someone with an index already in the steamvr space, justifying spending so much on a device thats only a better version of the already great thing i have is hard
