  • I drove out to Governor Bebb Metropark in Butler County, Ohio to try out iOS 18’s new Satellite messaging features (and made a video because I couldn’t find any others).
This is only my second project ever, I hope you enjoy :)
I am not used to talking into a camera lol

Sweet, thank you. I swear it's s underated feature. I was hoping it kick in automatically, but i understand why i have to launch the feature to use it. It sweet also that tho not perfect it is technically available for immediate use on the beta so imagine the main release it should be working right

I know of one problem and it’s not the Sat service. It’s the fact that my 14 pro max (and most phones) tend to show 1 bar of weak service even though you can’t do anything with the phone and because it show’s service the satellite system won’t kick in because it thinks you have service. I have a Zoleo satellite communicator that uses sat and cellular service I constantly have to put my phone in airplane mode to get it to send by satellite.

Were you able to make this work by disabling your eSIM entirely or removing your SIM card? or do you have to be in an area with a valid SIM but no coverage?

you need to be in an area with a valid sim but no coverage. satellite connectivity is disabled otherwise.

Any idea if this is going to be free to everyone in the U.S.?

I don’t think it’s been confirmed by Apple, but the assumption is that it will be free as long as the previous satellite sos features were free (3 years from iPhone 14 or 2 years from iPhone 15).

I tried to use this yesterday with iOS 18 beta, it did not work, I was only allowed to use the demo.

you need to have no service or else it won't work

@@nicholaskiefercan you just turn off your cell service in settings to get it to work? The demos work for me and I can get SOS to display when I turn off cell service in settings but I never see the option to use message via satellite.
