  • Hello and welcome to episode 54 of Trash to Track.
In this episode we take a look at a Hornby Railroad 9f that has been sent in by Mike. He states its a non runner so lets take a look and see if we can return Evening Star to the tracks.
    Thanks for looking.

This was a good one Dan. Railroad 9Fs are highly respected models even today despite their increasing age - and let’s face it, Chinese made Hornby models come up all the time and yes the pick-up arrangement makes them fiddly but you laid it out in a very straightforward fashion which really made it seem easy.

One of these days I’ll get one of these. I have three of the old tender drive ones, but I really do prefer a motor in the locomotive ! My favourite is my 92240. Very heavily weathered and detailed it really looks the part. When you removed the coupling rods from the rear drivers it reminded me of photos I saw of the last 9F’s at Carnforth and Lostock Hall MPD’S in summer 1968 where some of them had had their rear coupling rods removed and were running their last days as 2-8-2’s!

How did you remove the ringfield casing from the tender chassis? Mine seems to be in so tight I can’t remove it. Feel like I’m going to break it. I want to make my tender wheels more free rolling like you did in the video

The mechanism is great on these but the Mazak rot issue is a thing to be constantly aware of. I've got a couple of of the late 5-pole Ringfield Tender drive 9f's R2105A and R2105D which I am looking to convert to Locomotive drive with this chassis. Hopefully it is just a simple case of transferring the bodies across.
EDIT. Having just received delivery of Hornby R2880 I can confirm it is a straight body swap.
