- If your a bigger person, like me, you probably worry about getting back on your kayak if you fall off. With this technique, you can boost your confidence and be more comfortable on the water.
This is not a "sure thing" technique, it's just what works for me. But, it should at least give you somewhere to start! Actually doing it was the scary part for me. Now, I have much greater confidence on the water!
I know that what I do on the ground and what I do on the yak look like two different things. They aren't really that different. By practicing what I did on the ground, I was able to do what I did on the yak!
Remember, CENTER of balance is the most important part! Keep your head over the center of the hull and all will be fine.
If you didn't make it to the end,.. Well,... Let's just say you missed the best part... LOLOL - Sport
This video presents one of the most genuine and generous display of sacrificial effort to bring about learning to others. I liked the point you made about how some focus on getting on the kayak, whereas the goal in getting back on the kayak begins by getting the kayak under one’s body. I see the difference. Well done, Sir.
Thanks so much! I’m stoked that it helped you out. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻
3 years Later and still helping big dudes out. Thanks for this!!
Yeah I’m pretty stoked it caught on. I lost a lot of weight since then but I’m still no spring chicken. 😂
Just got done watching a toothpick get into his kayak and found this after. Much more realistic for those of us who are closer to the width of our kayaks...lol. Thanks. Keep on dancin' brother.
I’ve seen too many “toothpicks” giving quickie tutorials lately. I’m thinking they simply need the content 😝. Thanks for the kind comments and thanks for watching! 🍻
@@BizlaC I'm a big guy and UI don't float very well. 😖
I am not a "big guy" but this is one of the best...most informative....kayaking videos I've seen. Even though I am not "a bigger dude" I think this video has great value to ALL kayakers! Damn good job sir!
Thanks so much!! I’ve lost over 140lbs and I still find this to be the most consistent technique!
Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻
I couldn't agree more
As a somewhat out-of-shape woman who spent a good part of this last weekend in neck deep water in a lake, trying to practice climbing back on a kayak, in front of a gaggle of relatives and other campers- thank you for this video! Can't wait to try it this way. And why do I feel like dancing? 😁
😂 thanks so much for watching and commenting! Now bust a move! 💃
As a large figured women who wants to be a man I can tell that I’ll fall into the water first then scream rape somebody pork him
Just got my KAYAK haven't even been out on the water yet. And as a big guy myself after watching this I feel a lot more confident. So cheers mate 🎽👍👍🐺
Welcome to the Yakers brother! I’m so glad this gave you confidence 💪 Just be sure to purposefully fall/roll out in shallow water a couple of times to gain your bearings. You got this! 🍻
Thanks, from a 60 plus guy from South Africa. Never too old to have some fun.
Your so welcome! And no, your never too old! 🍻
Hi, I'm only 120 lbs and 5 foot tall and this method is even easier for me because i don't have a long reach. Climbing on from the side is hard to do. Thank you for sharing this video. It is very helpful. Cheers from the Bahamas, Barbara AKA The Rocket Cat.
That’s so awesome! I’m so glad it helped you out. Thanks for watching and commenting.
You rock! Very informative and thoughtful for the "bigger" crowd.
Thanks for the laugh at the end. It is so refreshing to see someone having fun!
Thanks so much for watching and the awesome comments!
This video single handedly got rid of my one fear as a beginner. Thanks man
That’s so awesome! Im stoked your more confident! Trust me, if I can do it anyone can.
Who ever said a large person cannot be an exceptional athlete! Bravo.
Thanks SO much!
and a great dancer
You sir are a magician. I have never seen such bravery, sheer daring, unadulterated talent before. You have enhanced my belief in humanity and all of its potential. You are deserving a genuine blue ribbon, Medal of Honor, citizen of the year award, and outstanding man and water instructor of the year. I feel covered in any of my kayak ventures. Thanks
Thanks for the awesome comments!
Thank you for sharing your TRUTH! Love it!! Now, I am not considered obese, I could stand to lose 10-15 pounds. I'm not worried about that. I'm more concerned with eating healthy and living my best life (which happens to include kayaking whenever I can). I really appreciate watching your video for tips on recovering from a fall or spill, if you will. Definitely informative and I plan to watch it again before I can set sail again. I am 61, recovering from full knee replacement surgery, and I was never a very good swimmer. So, first thing I had to do was fight my fear of the water. Then I went to REI to get fitted for a good PFD. Now I'm going to gain even more confidence by watching your video over and over again until it sticks to my brain. Thank you so much! I am sure that others will find your video as a helpful, valuable tool as much as I do!
Such amazing comments!! Thanks so much!
I always have to tell people that kayaking didn’t cause me to loose weight, loosing weight over time caused me to kayak more! You got this and I pray you have a speedy recovery! 🥂
Not a big guy, and not one of your 100 subscribers, but that dance at the end made me subscribe. Thanks for the info and moment of pure joy.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and commenting and especially for the SUB! 🍻
This video helped me a lot! I’m a big girl and this is the only video I’ve found that helps our people!
So glad it helped you! Thanks for watching and commenting! Be safe out there!
Yesterday was my first time in a kayak and I'm never leaving it now. I'm 43 and it's the most fun I've ever had. Thanks for the safety info. I need to learn all I can
So glad it helps you out! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Dude! This will, literally, save someone's life! I'm a big guy and I can swim rather well but wondering how to remount my kayak has plagued me for some time. I think I'll take my 'yak out into the shallows and try this technique. The best advice I've received is 'if you're going out on the water, dress like you expect to be IN the water at some point.'
Thanks so much for this! Yes, practice makes it so much easier! I was only able to develop and be proficient at this because of practice, practice, practice!
Awesome, thank you! There were a couple big guys on kayaks last weekends. One tipped over and couldn’t get back on. He panicked, thinking he was going to drown, even though he had life vest on. Had to be rescued by fishing boat.
It was scary.
I'm glad he was ok! I've seen so many that simply need to practice falling off and getting back on. I couldn't do it at first but now its much easier. I'm thinking the next video I film should probably be how to become more stable on your kayak. There are a lot of really good exercises out there that absolutely anyone can do. Thanks so much for the awesome comment!
You probably saved a few lives with this video. Thanks.
Thanks so much for saying this. I have seen way too many kayakers pull their yaks 100 yards or more to shore only to hate the entire experience. Yes, falling off a yak is part of the experience but it should never be considered as a “risk”. 🍻
Good tips. There is no substitute for practice. Everyone should practice. I like how you kinda came in from the side of the bow. When I practiced with my Bonafide EX123, I came over the bow (had to take off my PFD to accomplish getting up). Once I was up I rested like you say. The next problem was that there was nothing to grab onto to help me scoot forward towards the seat! I like how you have those YakAttack rod holder bases to grab onto. I'm thinking to improve balance I'll use my paddle and a paddle float. I already use those with my Jackson Cuda 14. That kayak is so big and heavy I can't flip it back over so I use a homemade stirrup to help me flip it back over. I also use it to help climb in from the side. The paddle float and my paddle help keep the Cuda stable while I'm getting in. FYI: I'm 69 yrs old and 270lbs. I practice re-entry every season. I've only capsized for real one time in nine years. You are so correct about emphasizing the center point for balance. Thanks for posting this video. Tight lines.
Thank you so much for sharing this awesome information!!! Such great feedback. This is definitely one of those things you hope will never happen but probably, at some point, will. Stay safe and save some fish for me! 🍻
I just got my first kayak a few days ago and trying to watch as much as I can about kayaks... your video my friend is by far the best of all.
You have a new subscriber.
Thank you.
Martin Jakubiuk thanks a TON! And welcome to the yak club. Be safe out there.
I'm in the same boat! (😂😂sorry)
But really I almost wish there was more that I can do than like/subscribe, so helpful and fun and cute!!
I was diagnosed with MS and there are times when I am in the water, that I just do not have the strength to pull myself up. I am looking forward to trying it, this weekend! I just got my kayaks yesterday. Besides being 225 pounds, I am also a 54 year old with MS. I will come back and tell you how I do! Thanks again!
I'm SO looking forward to hearing how it goes. Please be sure to practice before "relying" on this technique. My wife has Scoliosis which comes with two rods in her back. She kayaks with me ALL the time. She hasn't fallen in but she has practiced different techniques and found one she likes. Point is,.. find what works for you, practice, then use that confidence on the water. You will have WAY more enjoyable adventures that way. Thanks for sharing and thanks watching!
Same here I weigh about 250 and want to try a kayak we have a bunch of nice streams here and I think a kayak would be better than aluminum boat thank you very much
@@FaithsWindmy teenage son around 6 ft/220, has moderate scoliosis. If you do not mind, could you share (in text) what your wife does that is different from what you shared?
@@Oderick801 she does have a different technique or two but she is also 5’ tall and only weighs 97lbs. While she has limited movement this gives her a tremendous advantage over bigger folks. If the kayak has a small or foldable seat in it the best way would be the same approach as I showed but from the stern instead of the bow. With this method he can simply “scoot” into position with each leg over the sides without having to turn around. However this technique also has a flaw as the stern of the yak must be clear of obstacles such as coolers and bags. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching and commenting!
thank you for this, i'm a bigger lady so this is definitely helpful and boosts my confidence if it ever happens.
I’m so glad it helps you! Thanks so much for watching!
Watching till the end: PRICELESS!! 💯👍🏽
Keep up being awesome, mate and thanks for the tips!!
Thanks so much for the awesome comments! 🍻
I have a similar kayak and had the same issue as you, hard to get back into the kayak after rolling it.
I came to the same conclusion as you, crawling in from the front, but I also added a short looped rope to make a step for my foot.
This also helped my young grandkids get back into it easier also.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for this info! I’d love to see a short video of your setup. I tried to implement a rope step off the front but couldn’t get it to work every time. 😢
The “pushing” of the yak downward would definitely be easier if you could use your foot to help with it.
I have just started SUP-boarding, and I want to get a kajak. Not bring able to back into it is a worry. Thank you SO much to you and everybody that makes content like this. As a large woman I have a full breast and a big butt, a pfd and _not_ a mans upper body strength.
Sharin information like this is so important, because it helps the rest of us to be able to do the things we wanna do!
THANK YOU.
Thanks so much for the awesome response! Be sure to practice. It builds confidence and you have a much better time on the water.
Thank you for making this video! At long last I've purchased my first kayak, am a bigger person, and a lady of a certain age. After watching your video, I feel more confident about how to get back in should I fall out. Thank you for sharing, and for your dance! I appreciate both your knowledge and joy.
So glad you found us! Thanks for watching and the awesome comments.
You probably just saved my life! Well, actually you just opened up my kayak experience to bigger waters as I've been too scared to stray too far from shore because of being worried about being unable to get back in. I'm going to be trying out your technique this weekend to practice. Thank-you so much!
thienderthiender I’m SO HAPPY for you! Please let us know how practice goes. Now go be AWESOME!
I want to learn how to kayak, but I'm currently pretty big, and I, like many others, was afraid of whether or not I would be able to recover if I flipped over. This just gave me that missing puzzle piece of confidence to go ahead and learn! Thank you so much
I’m so happy it helped you out! Just go your own pace and practice until you gain your confidence! 🥂
Dude. You rule. I've been so nervous to get me a kayak because of the good old quarantine 40. I'll be buying mine next week and have a lot less fear. Thank you for your thick boi service!

I am a big guy (6'4" 300 Lbs).
I haven't been kayaking for a couple years due to transportation and finances, but I might have a chance again here in a month or two. I was glad to see this in my CZcams feed, because while I haven't bailed in decades (all the way to Summer Camp back in school in the 90s), I wanted a quick refresher. As soon as you said "move the boat, not yourself" all the memories came back to me on how I was able to do it in the past. That was a good reminder. Thank you. :)
That’s so awesome!! Thanks so much for your comments! 🍻
I’m 50 years old and plus sized. I had- still have a sit-in tandem Pelican kayak. I thought about it- my thighs are a little tight in the hole where you sit. I was really worried about flipping over and being stuck because my body would be inside the kayak still upside down in the water. AKA you gonna die. So I got a sit ON Sundolphin kayak instead. Much safer imo.
This is GREAT information because we always wanted to know but were afraid to ask. It’s super hard to maneuver around without tipping. I haven’t flipped it yet but I way more confident now thanks to you. We don’t want to be featured on CZcams in a video of us flailing around like a fish out if water for the world to laugh at - people can be so mean.
Doctors always say we should get into shape and kayaking is a great way to do it. I’m a really good swimmer and I’m getting in better shape with weight training and Pilates. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Thanks so much for this awesome comment!
I weighed over 360lbs at my peak and at 5’ 10” that’s way over weight! I lost over 140lbs over about a 7 year period and I didn’t work out a single day to achieve it. I always tell people that my weight loss isn’t due to my new active lifestyle but that my active lifestyle is a result of my weight loss.
I have a video on here about what worked best for me. Losing weight was NOT my goal; being able to do things with my loved ones is and always will be my goal.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Be safe out there!
@@FaithsWind Good job! I’m sure you feel so much better. I know I do. I started at 245lbs at 5’6”. I’m around 210 now. I’ve started weight training. Apparently we loose muscle after 40 and that makes us age rapidly- as in we can do fun stuff anymore. I like your mentality with thinking you’d like to do things with your family. That’s what motivated me too.
Weight lifting makes me feel like a kid. NO KIDDING! There’s a spring in my step.
I’ll check out your video! Thanks so much. You be safe too. God bless
I genuinely appreciate the efforts you put into this video. I'M not a big guy, but it gave me a better idea of the struggles that my bigger friends will face and good advice for the real world. Thank you!

For me the best dancer in the world. Love your sense of humour. Take care and go well. Very useful tip
Thanks so much!
Great study in ingenuity. Just ONE thing. 10:44 Your head/shoulders provide balance for your ass trying to tip you back over as you "rotate".
Being aware of that could make the turnover much easier and more controlled.
As another gravitationally disadvantaged person, thanks for your research.
I have to go off and try this in an open Canadian canoe. One day.
Thanks so much for your awesome comments and info! I would love to see it tried on a canoe! 🍻

Great video! I’m a newbie to kayaking. I’m average-sized, but upper body strength is not my... strength. :) The techniques you demonstrated are great. I’m a big fan of having several different methods of doing something, for safety’s sake, especially since I’ll be kayaking alone most of the time. Nicely done. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Thanks so much for watching. I’m so glad it helps you out. Please be sure to practice, lord knows I had to lol.
I've been kayak fishing for a long time down on the Texas coast. I stay on the flats or close to shore for fear of tipping. I haven't done it yet, but I figure it's just a matter of time. I've tried different ways to get back on with no luck. Watching you gives me some hope. Thank you!
We live on a sailboat and have never drug anchor in over 15 years. However we have always had a plan in place in case we do. Sure enough, last week we anchored in Sarasota bay and a huge wind front came through unexpectedly and we drug 350 feet. If not for the practice of the back up system we wouldn’t have recovered from it. It’s always a great idea to be prepared!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 🍻
Thank you! Getting back into my kayak is a big concern for me, bring 6'4", 300 lbs, with bad knees. What got me into the sport was my father buying one. He's 77, and full of arthritis. I needed to be there for him. Thanks again.
Kurt Misner it’s so awesome that he yaks at 77! #MyNewHero thx for watching!
Kurt Misner hey Kirt I am 67. I had a bad knee since high school football. Wish I had never seen a dam football. Anyway I got it replaced about 20 years ago!!!!!
Swear to God most days I can’t tell it’s not OEM. Some days it does ache a little.
Also have a hip replacement for 20 years got them both done about the same time.
I lived years in a chair for years. Stupidity. Thru away a lot of life. If you hurt and can’t walk go get it done. The knee hurt like hell. The hip was nothing. But I would have it done again in a heartbeat.
@@tomharrell1954 thank you for the insight, and encouragement. I'm working on my weight, and that is helping too. One of these days I'll check in with the doc. Thanks!

Really like the fact you took the time to teach a large person how to recover a kayak , I’m an open water swimmer and long distance kayaker ( seat on top my favorite) and I’m always often found my self rescuing someone a few large ones , in open water to keep the wind in mind and never solo , I’m the short guy with a bad back . Thank you !
So glad you enjoyed it! Oh, and thank you for being there for people in need! I have had to "haul" a few folks in myself. :D
Awesome! 👏😎 I just gotta go paddlin wit dis guy. Not only is he helpin out the paddlers of the.... larger variety, he’s also got some moves.
C’mon man, let’s part some water together! I’m ALWAY up for a paddle! As for the moves... well, that depends on the mood... 😂🤣 🍻
Thanks for the video. It always seems to be stick thin people demonstrating self rescue. Next time I go in I will definitely give it a go.

Mowing the lawn was a nice intro btw.
Thanks so much!
THIS just made the difference on whether I buy a kayak or not! Thank you!
So glad it helped you out! Thanks for watching and commenting. 🍻
Awesome video! Love to see someone over the age of 25 and over 150lbs do a recovery video. What I also appreciate is that you didn't totally strip your kayak down for the demo. You may have me in lbs, but I have you in years ;however, I use a rope to flip the kayak then put my foot in the rope to "launch" myself onto the kayak. It's a very graceful move. I would imagine it is similar to watching a new born foal trying to find its legs. 😄 The only thing I would recommend is finding a PDF that you can adjust better. It shouldn't be riding up to your eyeballs when you are in the water. If you can't find one, get some strap and take it to a seamstress to have the PDF straps modified. Even if it means putting a strap under the crotch to prevent the PDF from rising too high. Anyway, awesome video! Don't ever lose the humor. Subbed. Because you kayak and your a small channel. OK, I want to see what you do when you hit 200 subs. 😄👍🐟
Thanks so much for the comment, advice and the sub! Not sure what I'll do when I hit 200 subs but... it will definitely be better..well, at least more entertaining.. Though, I'm not sure that's possible! LOL Thanks again!
From one big guy to another thank you so much for making this video

Oh I love this guy!!! lol ...and yes....lots of different ways to get into a kayak....
Thanks SO much!!
Great video mate. A really good technique for really anybody who gets thrown out of their kayak.
Thanks so much. Yeah it is also way easier to do when your slimmer. 😆 🍻
I LOVED the dancing at the end!! Great vid by the way. Very entertaining 😁👍
Thanks so much! And thanks for watching until the end! 🍻
Great video! Thank you I'm shorter, older and plumper with trex arms, with the lifevest it really shortens my reach, this is a method I can use without getting my vest pushed up and half strangling myself!! Even though my knees are finished I'm sure the adrenaline will help me kneel to get back in sitting position. I love kayaking as my arms and shoulders are still good, the legs eh. Now I need to find a way to build an easy entry/exit ramp/mini wharf/stabilizer bar/grip type thing to build. Woo hoo you rock!!
Thanks so much! Yeah I have Degenerative Joint Disease in my knees and can’t do a lot of leg activities anymore. But this technique really doesn’t bother them. This is all about moving the yak under you instead of moving you over the kayak. They actually make a “standing bar” for kayaks. I had to get my Dad one when he couldn’t kneel down anymore. They work great! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🥂
Getting my big boy Kayak tomorrow, thanks so much, best tutorial out there
Thanks so much! Let us know how your first trip in the new yak goes! Stay safe! 🍻
I could have used this video prior to Friday. Yak scupper hole got a hole. Water got in the hull and flipped me. Ended up in the cold 40 degrees water of the lake. Thank you for sharing, us big guys need more for us about kayaking.
Sucks to get wet when it’s that cold🥶. I’m curious what may have caused the leak. Might you have used something in or through the scupper holes? Not being nosey, just may be able to help avoid any future issues. 😊
@@FaithsWind Im in a Native Stingray and the scupper holes are huge. There are only 4 of them. We were paddling at the Tenoroc Management Area which is reclaimed marsh land so there is debris below the water surface. I ran up on a tree truck below the surface that must have had a sharp branch that pierced the hole. FWC said they’d never seen that kind of damage to a yak and the repair shop says “well, that’s unusual.”
@@aliciamanautou2759 ahh, gotcha! Yeah, that FWC response doesn’t surprise me at all. Scupper damage is almost always caused in 2 ways; stress to the scupper from an awkward angle and weak points from the manufacturer. It’s also one of the top 3 places that’s near impossible to fix without the proper tools/machine. This is one of the biggest reasons I look for hull warranties before buying a yak. Thanks for the response. Glad your ok and I’m praying you get fixed up and back on the water soon! 🍻
@@FaithsWind thanks, and please, keep posting videos, just found yours tonight, we are enjoying them! Stay safe!

I was taught 50 years ago to get in on the back of the kayak. it saved my life in a cold Scottish 6ft swell when there was snow on the ground, when totally knackered after 15 miles heavy sea water canoeing at the age of 15. Just one important point don't loose your paddle - its the only thing you'll need when you get back in.
Yes, your paddle is extremely important! It’s the reason I noted it in the video 😊 Thanks so much for the input! 🍻
im glad i found this video. im a "larger person" and about to start kayak fishing and i was tired of seeing toothpicks get back in a flipped kayak, again thank you for making this.

WELL DONE! THANK YOU for TAKING THE TIME to actually illustrate and DEMONSTRATE a VERY HELPFUL "self-rescue".
You’re so welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you sir!! I fell out of my kayak recently and I tried it the way everyone else does it and I couldn’t do it. I got to the nose and almost did what you did minus pushing the kayak even more under me. I was lucky my dad dragged me up the rest of the way.
Thanks so much for sharing your story! It took me quite a few times to get it down but practice payed off. I hope you never have to use this techniques but if you do it’s a great feeling to be prepared.
Great technique! I agree Rules Number 1 and 2 are DO NOT PANIC! After that things will work out.👍😎 ~Maverick
finally a kayaker who knows how to have some FUN. thanks brother.
Kenneth Ketchum your very welcome!! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Wife and I are both "bigger persons" and have rented kayaks for an easy down river run and loved it. So now we are interested in owning a kayak or two. Biggest tip I got from your video was PRACTICE! Being a certified SCUBA diver, I know the value of being prepared for any situation. I have a lot more confidence in my abilities over inabilities but my wife, not so much. This video and practice will help her gain the confidence she needs. Thanks again.
I’m so glad this helps you! Thanks so much for the amazing comments! Be safe out there and above all enjoy life! 🍻
@@FaithsWind Do you recommend individual kayaks for a "bigger couple" or is there a stable 2 seater out there?
@@jakenyon56 🤔 as for multiple seats I would advise renting those. It’s not too bad to go tandem once or twice but you really don’t wanna do it every trip. As for Kayak preference I have a video that breaks down the characteristics of kayaks (Calling all Yakers) that will help you figure out what type of yak you or your spouse would be most comfortable in. That is something you would definitely need to test out. There’s a number of shops that have areas where you can get on the water with them. Good hunting! 👍
@@FaithsWind thank you very much. It's a little overwhelming for us older bigger folks. St Augustine is not exactly the best place to price shop. :)
Obviously, this took a lot of thinking, practice and time. Excellent ! Thank you.

You may have just saved my life. I have practiced many ways of getting back into my capsized "Salty" but none of them with my life jacket on. You are absolutely right that it is cannot be the same. Back to the drawing board I go, but at least I have a pool to practice in first. The obvious solution would be to not be a "big guy" and I am working on that for sure. But for the time being I'm 5'-9" and 237 lbs. which is the heaviest I've ever been. COVID pounds? Too many IPA's? Whatever.... Portion control "---hole"! (not you, me....LOL).
I know one thing. If you are a kayaker and have not turned over in the lake or river, it is just a matter of time before that happens. Goes with the kayak game and then "stuff" happens. Fortunately when it happened to me, I was close enough to shore to just swim and drag the boat until I was in shallow water. But there have been many times I've been out in the middle of a large body of water. I also don't kayak in deep water when it gets real cold. Hypothermia has killed many a fisherman.
Got some cool moves there, breau. Boogie on!
Thanks so much for you awesome comments! Well, at the time of this video I was around 285 and that was coming down from 363. Now I’m around 230 and still loosing. I have a video on my channel that sums up how I lost all my weight. Needless to say it has been a long journey.
In the military we didn’t train for what went right, we trained for worst case scenarios. That kept me alive many, many times over. However the key word is “train”. Watch, learn, apply then teach!
Be safe out there! 🍻
When I had a 10' Portabote, I wanted to make sure I could enter the boat from the water, so I made a loop in the rope attached to the front of the boat such that I could put my foot in it, and from there I could put my chest on the bow and enter the boat that way. Whatever you have, have a plan and practice it.
Ray Brensike thanks for that good advice.
There are many ways to re-enter. You are right about it being tougher for big, or older like me, paddlers and tougher with a pfd, especially with full pockets in the front. Boats matter a lot. Fishing kayaks are extra wide, low so as not to blow around, and have lots of gear on the back while fishing. But most other kayaks have narrower and taller bows to slice through rough water better. These have wider and lower sterns, so this is the place to re-enter, not the front.
I've helped a few people through the years and found nimble people can go directly into the seat from the side, sit on top or sit inside. If they can't quite do that, they may be able to go just behind the seat, slightly sinking and tilting the boat. If they can't manage this, then they can usually get up from the stern, lying prone and inch-worming along.
A great option is to make a sling with the bottom strung though a tube of some sort, like a garden hose, to make it easy to step into. Attach this along the side of the seat opposite from the side you are about to re-enter from. Stepping onto the sling will counterbalance the forces and not tip the boat over onto you as will happen if this sling is attached on your side of the boat. You can also use an unfeathered paddle as an outrigger when pushed through the bungees with or without a paddle float.
The important thing is to sort this out so that you are certain that re-entering is not a problem, even while worn out. Another thing, wind can easily blow a kayak away from you, so if windy, tie yourself to your boat or use a paddle leash and hold onto this if you capsize. Make sure there is nothing to catch your line. This recently happened to me when I exited my surfski to practice re-entry and I forgot my leg leash. I let go for a moment and I couldn't catch the boat.
yakinsea thanks for all the info! One note for the readers though. If you feel that you need to tie yourself to your boat, please use a “Break-a-Way” leash! Thanks for watching. 😃
Most real video on CZcams , thank you for this . Thank you for taking your time to do the drills
I’m so glad you like it! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻
@@FaithsWind from Canada so lots of choppy water just getting into kayak fishing
@@Offthegridfishing practice builds confidence! Trust me, if I can do it anyone can!👍
Saving the best till last. Truly outstanding. 😂🤣🤣
Lol, yeah... thanks for watching and commenting. 🍻
Fantastic info. I'm only 150lbs and I found this super useful
So awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fantastic Video. I have watched hundreds of others and found they all try thre same unsuccessful method for myself. Your video provides the perfect solution for me being almost 70 years and overweight. At last i can get back into my kayak and not be out of breath and still have the energy to continue on my way. THANKS
Robert Woods so glad that it helped you! Thanks for watching and for the comment! Be safe!
Hi from OHIO! I am a big gal and I LOVE kayaking. I have my own (12’ sit on sun dolphin) but even in the buoyant water of the gulf I could NOT get back in it the way most ppl tell you to. I tried and tried but I just decided well..if I ever do flip over im just gonna have to dog paddle my way over to the water's edge to get back on. I can’t wait to give your way a try!! Oh and A+ on the dancing ..LOVE it :)
Hello to you in OHIO! I LOVE that you are still wanting to hit the water! Thanks SO much for watching! I hope you never have to try it but, know that you can do it!!
Thank you very much! I will go practice these skills. I had given up on thinking I could ever get back onto my kayak if it flipped.
That’s so great to hear! Let us know how it goes and thanks for the comment! 🍻
Well done! Thank you, sir! And congratulations on taking off the weight. No small feat. Well done again!
Thanks! Also, thanks for watching and commenting ! 🍻
Going kayaking for the first time today, doing some research and ran across your video. Hopefully I won't fall off but if I do I know I can get back on safely by watching a video. Thank you so much.
So glad you found this! Be safe and remember, just sit back and enjoy the very slow ride! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻
Just found your video. Thanks so much, this part of kayaking has always had me concerned. Your video is a huge batch of info and effort that's greatly appreciated. Still looking for my first Yak and learning what I can. I'm running 245-ish these days, but after illness I'm far softer (plump) than when I was 265. You have really shown that a flip isn't the end, and not to fear it. Again - great work, well done, and thanks so much for this video. P.S. Still got those moves 🙂
Thanks so much for your beautiful comments!! I’m so glad you have more confidence! Practice builds even more confidence. Remember it’s not the end of life until we stop breathing so go LIVE! 🍻
Glad I found this video. I just know it's going to be the one instruction that's going to save my ass in the future
THANK YOU
Glad it helped you out! Be safe out there! 🍻
WOW that's awesome info 👍 for going out of your way even with the bad knee
Excellent video and you’re an amazing dancer! I’m one of those “toothpicks” that has found it easy to “leap” back into the kayak but as I get older and weaker, new techniques are welcome. I used to help teach kayaking and we often used the paddle float/outrigger/ foot stirrup system which worked for heavier people. These were sit in kayaks but I’m sure it would work with sit on top kayaks. With this method, your Center of gravity is always low. Thank you for your interesting and very informative video. You got talent! I have subscribed!😀
Thanks so much for the awesome comments and subscribing!! So much more to come! 😉 🍻
Mate, the whole thing was cool, live life and have fun, regards from Australia.
Thanks so much! One day we will be on your side of the world but until then go be AWESOME! 🍻
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this. I am a short, big girl who really could have used this info yesterday 😂 I can't wait to try practicing this next time I go out! This is awesome!
So glad you found us! Practice builds confidence! Also, some of this technique can be practiced at home 😉
@@FaithsWind I will for sure need to practice the knee balance ninja pivot roll on the floor before I try it on a yak - but I feel so much less rattled than I did yesterday after my roll (which involved climbing a low-hanging tree to get back on board because NO WAY could I just pop myself on top of the thing!) and WAY more confident that I can better recover in the future. Again, thank you for this!
@@sunshinenoona ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome video, I've been looking to get into kayaking, mainly for recreation and fitness and to keep my mind off of current events, but I'm 285 pounds and I would probably find it hard to reboard my yak in the middle of the lake and would probably just end up using it like a log and swimming back to shore with it capsized. Thanks for showing us a better way.
SO glad it helps you be confident on the water! Be sure to practice. lol, It took me a few times before I was able to do it but now It's way easier to do. Be safe and be AWESOME!
Man you rock!!
This technic is prefect
More kayak fishing videos please.
You got a new Sub.
more kayak content has just been scheduled!! Yay team.. lolol
Thanks so much for sharing these tips and showing exactly how it's done! I'm not a little girl. I'm thicker than a Snicker at 5'11" and over 200 lbs and this has been weighing on my mind as a fairly new fishing kayak owner. I, too, have watched the videos showing climbing back in from the side, but with the water sucking you back down, this is hard enough for an athletic, slim, smaller person to do. Thanks for sharing something that a lot of people might be too embarrassed to discuss or show themselves doing. You could be saving someone's life.
I’m so glad it helps you out! Kayaking is one of our favorite activities so having confidence on the water is vital for us. As for being embarrassed, 😂 I’m not sure that’s in my vocabulary 😂. My wife has left me many times in stores 😛. I guess I just love who I am and understand that if people are offended by anything moral I do,.. well,.. I simply believe they are the ones with self esteem issues. 🤷♀️
Be sure to practice and enjoy life however God allows you too! 🥂
@@FaithsWind your dance at the end made my day!
Do what you love and having fun doing it NEVER gets ugly.
Great stuff. Thanks for posting. Properly fitted and secured PFD helps during the execution of these and other techniques.
Hello and thanks for this video. I’m a big guy and would love to have a go a kayaking. Too many people have been telling me I can’t, or aren’t I a bit too big for that! Well, to all those people, it’s as if you’ve just given them the big finger and said come on lad let’s do this. Thank you.
I love this! Thanks so much! Goals are just stepping stones to out wants, needs and desires! It’s natural to trip on one every now and again,.. as long as we keep on stepping!! 🍻
Thanks for the vid.... I'm a big dude 6'6" and 350 want to get into kayaking and this made my decision easier.....
So happy it helped you out! Thanks for watching and commenting! Remember to practice. 🍻
Loved the info but I have to say that dancing 🕺 at the end was awesome 👏🏻
K Wood awe, thanks so much for that!
This is such great technique and advice!!! Thanks.
Vg2 B thank you for your comment and for watching!
Tip 1: put tag lines on everything. You will never lose anything when you flip.
Tip 2: add a foot strap and attach it to the side of the kayak. You can slip your foot in it and climb right in.
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I can’t recommend either tip to my viewers.
Tip one is decent info however there is a great amount of controversy over lines becoming tangled around people during the overboard process. I have experienced this myself. (Which is why I didn’t have my gear tied off during shooting or practice)
Tip two: I tried the foot strap method multiple times with different techniques and was unable to produce consecutive results. Problem one; when you apply pressure to the side of ANY kayak it drastically changes the center of buoyancy resulting (in most cases) with the kayak flipping again. While this isn’t an issue with our skinnier counterparts it creates more problems than good for us larger folks. Problem two with foot straps is when you apply tension in the strap it conforms to your footwear. I found myself spending way too much time simply trying to remove my foot from the rope.
Please understand I’m in no way trying to say that these techniques don’t work for people. I’m simply explaining why I don’t promote them to my viewers.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 🍻
@@FaithsWind Thanks for this video. I accidentally flipped my fishing kayak about a month ago. Fortunately for me, I was in relatively shallow water and close to the shore when it happened. I was able to self-rescue fairly easily. But, this is good instruction should it happen in deeper water and further from shore.
I also agree with you regarding not tethering all your gear. The only thing I ever tether to the boat is my paddle, as loosing it would leave me up sh... well you know saying. I do make sure my crate cover is closed and secured at all times when I'm not accessing it. I put floats on all my rods. That is a simple and very inexpensive solution. Worst case scenario, I might loose a couple bags of soft plastics and my fish grips.
@@1960HikerDude I love your setup already! Stuff is awesome but life is way awesomer. 😁
Absolutely LOVED the dancing at the end! Thank you for the helpful information!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed your video! Thank you for taking time to put creativity, humor, and practical instructions together! :-)
Courtney Blair Reed So glad you enjoyed it! Thx SO much for watching!
@@FaithsWind You're welcome! I might need to visit a few more times when the weather gets nice! I'm doing a test run on a couple of new kayaks today (all bundled up in a small pond). Do you have any experience with roof rack kayak J hooks? Mine were a beast to install and I still don't feel they are very tight. It has been difficult to strap them down on my own as well. If you have any videos on that topic or advice, I'd love to watch that! :D
Courtney Blair Reed It’s a perfect time to visit my area right now. Weather is mild and the water at the springs is 72 degrees all year! As for the J hooks; there are so many videos and opinions on them. I actually bought and installed 2 sets. They were a pain to get right. After loading them one time I ripped them off and built a small kayak trailer. Best decision of the year. Lol
great video. Thanks from a 6,4 and 300 pounds Kayaker
