Hey, it's me, Hannah. I have declared this year to be the year of the con. I've never been to a proper fan convention of any sort, and I've only ever created cosplays just for my own joy. But this year, this year I'm going to at least one convention. I've only bought one pass so far. I have lovingly been peer pressured into going to court to con 2024, which from what I understand is very cosplay heavy and is only a few weeks away. After chatting with some friends about what to expect and what I should do to prepare, I have decided to make this con weekend very vampire themed for no other reason than I've just wanted to cosplay a couple of vampy characters. So we're starting with the Pale Elf himself and I'm going to kick off my con cosplay journey with Astarion from Baldur's Gate three. Now Astarion has a number of different options when it comes to his outfits, but I'm going to go with his official character, Art look, which is his default armor, starting with his blue jacket with the purple jacket and gold embroidery.
There's probably a bunch of different ways I could have done this and probably easier ways too. But I decided to just map out the shapes of the blue and purple panels on my mannequin and then drape some scrap fabric to create a pattern that way. I obviously wanted this jacket to be relatively form fitting, so that's why I went this route.
Once I knew where everything was going to line up, I cut out all the pieces in the blue fabric as well as some red lining fabric and the purple velvet for the collar, all with a half inch seam allowance. Let's get to sewing.
So I'm using this gold piping bias tape to get that sort of effect in between each of the panels, and then I'm going to glue some of the leftover pearls from my last project to the piping. Once I have everything, I'll set.
There's also this like small panel of leaf detailed fabric on the sleeve, just under the arm. This actually matches the fabric of the I guess they are chaps very ornate chaps. I ordered some fabric that I'm going to have to dye that I think is going to work really well for both the chaps and the sleeve detail. I'm going to have to wait for that fabric to get here. So that might end up being in a part two.
And then I also have this really pretty purple velvet for the I guess, the black IT area on the jacket. This is where a lot of the embroidery is going to be. And I thought about and started the embroidery detail by hand. This would take me hours. I actually started shopping around for an embroidery machine. But those are so expensive, so a dear friend of mine is letting me borrow hers. In the meantime, I'm going to sew together the blue panels of the jacket and see how far we can get.
So I drove an hour to visit my friends Aaron and Morgan and borrow Morgan's embroidery machine. I had purchased some files from an Etsy shop. I went to a down below and they worked out okay. But we had to do some guesswork about lining the different pieces up. And those machines still take a good amount of time to finish.
So I was able to wrap up the sleeve details, but then I had to head home. Huge thanks to Morgan and Erin. With their support. I had everything I needed to work on the sleeves when I got back.
I basically just treated these embroideries as applications and used some golden thread and a really tight zigzag stitch on my sewing machine to attach them directly to the ...
Don't think of it as falling short - think of it as the beta release! The outfits in BG3 have incredibly intricate designs, this is a wonderful job so far and I can't wait to see the rest! Just think of what you'll be able to create next with new knowledge unlocked and upgraded machinery.
Despite the problems youve encountered, that jacket is truly stunning. You continue to amaze me as I cannot even fathom trying to piece this all together how you have. I look forward to part 2!
You’re the best, and always know just what I need to hear 🥹🫂
This was so fun to watch, subscribed!
not only is this jacket stunning, but your positive attitude is a great example of of, "hey, accept it as it is, do your best in the time you have, and if you just have fun with it you'll have something you can be happy with the results with." And I love that! Great vibes, instant subscribe.
ahhh I'm so excited to see how this turns out!! Next time you have to do that embroidery with your machine, you may want to try a similar coloured regular thread in your bobbin if you didn't already give that a go. Might have an easier time with the thread not knotting up on the bottom. Sewing machines are fickle things though so that could make it worse idk rip sewing machine though. I'm sure you'll find a way to get it done!
Great point! Thanks for the tip!
Aaaaaah I think it is coming along nicely!! I am always so impressed by your skills - both with crafts and your video production. Looking forward to viewing the final result and hopefully see it in person!!
So beautiful! The embroidery looks amazing. Maybe you can edit the etsy pattern to make it more accurate for the back.

Thank you so much!!
The jacket looks absolutely stunning, would you post the embroidery pattern for the back if you ever figured it our?
Will do!
oh nooooo not the machine!! sending all the good vibes ✨
Rip in peace, sewing machine 🪦🥲
oh my fucking gooood you are a life saver! I am also doing a Astarion cosplay !
What type of blue fabric did you use for the jacket? I want to make my own astarion cosplay so I’d like to know. I plan on cutting up a pair of dark denim jeans for the chaps, and sewing a little pocket on the inside so I can store my phone and stuff.
I used a sort of canvas material with a slight stretch. Great idea for the chaps!
I will admit to being biased here... you might want to look into getting a vintage black iron straight stitch machine (I have 3 from the WWII era) that can be your heavy duty work horses. They are HEAVY (28# for my 15-90 and 33 for my 201's), but they are powerful and very easy to maintain. If you get a modern machine for the specialty stitches, having a big, bad girl to do the heavy lifting will protect it to a large degree.
I actually just got an antique machine from like the early 1900s that I want to try to refurbish at some point. It works, except that it needs a new belt. I think that would be such a treat, and also be capable of handling these kinds of projects a bit better!
@@makinghannah is yours a round bobbin model, or does it use a long bobbin and shuttle?
