- Angela Lansbury giving one HELL of a performance as Mama Rose in the 1974 B'way revival of 'Gypsy.' This woman is SO amazing. Features "Some People," "Together Wherever We Go," and "Rose's Turn." Rex Robbins as Herbie, and Zan Charisse as Louise.
No copyright infringement intended. I didn't film this. For entertainment purposes, only.
This performance was 39 years ago and I can understand EVERY word she's saying. Now that's some incredible work on Lansbury's part
Thanks. She's so good it's scary. And the fact that she can break out into a dance shows what a great triple threat she was.
I saw her in London and wrote her a letter - and got a letter in return.
I still cherish it.
Jesus, No woman that has played this gave me chills like......She slayed.......For me, I appreciate multiple portrayals or takes on a role.... Angela is the definitive Mama Rose to me
I saw Angela Lansbury in this production. And she was magnificent. And yes, she brought the house down with "Rose's Turn".
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but what I remember was that it took a minute to realize she was breaking character by bowing at the end of Rose's Turn. You didn't realize what was really going on until the applause stopped and she kept bowing. "We" were in her head.
She brought a certain class to this role that nobody else did.
Love her!
The best Rose by far... the London cast recording is terrific.
No dislikes. That is how amazing this is.
I was 12 and was VERY lucky to have seen this. Changed my life. The woman can do no wrong on a Broadway stage. GOD BLESS ANGELA.
Thank you for posting this great footage.
ANGELA brought European Elegance and femininity to the role on top of the tour de force belting and devastating stage presence. I saw her live, I can't describe the volcanic eruptions of a true genius on stage.
Consider: this inhumanly talented lady -- and a great lady at that -- sings in this song "That's perfect for some people/Of one hundred and five." As of this year, Dame Angela is within ten years of that age.
She got so fucking fierce in Rose's Turn - the fiercest I've ever seen her. And by God, she may be the best actress to ever live, just judging by Rose's Turn.
God. Why did i have to be born in the 80's? I would give anything, ANYTHING, to have seen this. Angela is amazing and brilliant in everything does. Seeing her 'Rose's Turn' gave me chills. Too bloody perfect.
I was born in the 50s but no chance to see this fantastic lady
She is a goddess. Love love love.
I was in the audience in London in 1974. I never got over her performance! I cried my eyes out at Rose's Turn.
Her ability to sing is amazing, but her ability to sing after dancing in "Together Wherever We Go" is astounding. People usually say that Merman was the greatest Rose, but what could she have done on any level that could top this?
Ethel Merman was a ghastly singer. Angela Lansbury was fantastic in this revival. Even Julie Styne admitted that she was far better than Merman.
Merman was a foghorn voice with little to no acting ability. I think the best Roses are Lansbury and Lupone. I prefer Lupone's absolutely terrifying performance a bit more though, but Lansbury sounds nicer on recording.
@@BEE-mp9vk First, it's not a bake-off. What Merman had was...Merman. She was, and will always be, in my opinion, the best Rose.
What she lacked in acting chops--and she was thoroughly convincing as Rose, bringing class denotation to the role that Landsbury misses--she made up for by being...Merman. People who didn't see her live in the theater may not see or understand this.
Wrong, most people think Lupone is the best Rose. I've never heard ANYONE (alive in this day and age) say Merman's rose was the best. It's actually kind of shameful. Merman was a very talented actress and singer. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to mask their negative opinion of her in a fog of crap to make you believe she was genuinely bad but she wasn't a legend without reason.
@@WarperBlade I found lupone rose quite terrifying but wasn’t really likable like Angela’s rose who had more depth and warmth like a mother would.
I've been waiting to see footage of AL on stage since I was six years old. THANK YOU CZcams!!!!
I saw this revival when I was 13 or so, in Boston prior to Broadway - it's still the best musical I have ever seen. Met Angela Lansbury afterwards.
OH MY GOD. I cannot get over the amazingness of this woman. She is so incredibly talented - the best Rose! There is no one like her!
The only time I ever got to see her live was in Beauty/Beast when she was Ms. Potts! AMAZING. People applauded half way through the song! She is so so loved!
This would have been amazing to see live!
What a great great star in a great great performance. I'm so lucky to have seen her do this on stage. It's great to have such terrific close up video of Lansbury in action. Thank you!
I'm totally devestaded by her "Rose's Turn". Please someone find a complete performance of this. But even with this little bit I can die and go to heaven.
I saw this production on closing night.
Every once in a while, all the aficionados in NYC get the same idea & this night was one of them.
At first, I don't think the cast realized. The audience truly apprieciated EVERYTHING.
buttt then they caught on to the type of house they were playing to and one fed off the other until a crescendo at Rose's Turn.
I truly felt the balcony shake as the fans cheered & stomped.
BRAVO !!! a night to never be forgotten.
Absolute Brilliance all around!!!
What a powerhouse performance.Amazing!
O. M. G. If only I could have seen this live. When I go to heaven this is one of the performances I will see over and over!
I first heard this on LP in 1981 and for me she is Rose. No criticism of anyone else intended, but Lansbury is the consummate musical theatre actress who also has the dramatic chops and intelligence for this part. I guess I fell in love with her then and although I can appreciate other interpretations her energy and verve just do it for me every time. Thanks Angie and thanks for sharing. I've watched this many times over the years.....
WOW!!!!!!!!
Angela...basically, unlimited talent.
As well, Ms Lansbury has commented in her Archive of American Television interview that she was getting to an age where she was looking for some security and television seemed to be secure. Her expectations of security were surpassed beyond her wildest dreams, it would seem, with 'Murder, She Wrote' as it ran for 12 seasons and she ended up owning the show, thus being paid in perpetuity as an actress, producer and owner. She is a legend, we won't see her like again.
Saw her do this at the Shubert Theatre in Century City, California. Never knew Mama Rose could be so touching and insane at the same time. A wonderful performance!
At the absolute least she gives 150% shes too incredible....love her.
THANK YOU for posting...this is magnificent. Angela Lansbury really throws herself into these songs with a passion & brilliance I have never seen (or heard) before...Wow! I wish I had been in the audience. I did know someone years ago who HAD seen the London performance & he said Miss Lansbury was superb & gave an original & effective portrayal of Mama Rose & really shocked the audience, especially with Rose's Turn. He said they LOVED her & you could probably hear the applause in Australia!
I have been looking for someone who sang a version of Rose's turn who wasn't Kurt, and when i found Angela lansbury, I was over joyed. I love this woman (especially in Sweeney Todd) And this is the best rose's turn i've ever seen preformed by a woman
Actually, she went into television because of the fact that three of her next Broadway projects all fell through. She was set to lead the cast of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway-bound version of SUNSET BLVD, which Sondheim, himself decided against doing. She was also set to play the title role in "Roza" a musical. She also did "A Little Family Business" which was an unfortunate flop. She decided that a television series would be the best thing to do next.
Just the best! I think she's one of my favorite Roses from what I've seen. She can act AND sing with the best of 'em! Her Rose's Turn is terrifying!
Just incredible!
She is just perfection! A true artist.
wow, wow, WOW! sorry I missed her in this but I didn't move to NYC until the following year! I did catch La Lupone in 2008 and she was a knockout!
wow. what a force of nature
Thanks for posting this! I saw her do this just before it closed in early 1975x She was as electrifying there as she is here. I’ll never forget it.
This is wonderful footage! She has such a strong energy in her performance. It's not hard to see why she won the Tony for this performance at all.
Wow - thanks so very much! Living on the West Coast, I've never had the chance to see her live - this is so wonderful!
She’s amazing
She is phenomenal, only word for this woman. Thanks for posting! :O)
This woman is why I'm an actor....
there is no way you can say angela is not amazing in anything she does! regardless of all other "rose's" they all bring something to the role i think! and they are all strong in certain ways and all great in their own way. I enjoy all their versions of this character for different reasons. part of it may be being an actor myself i enjoy watching different people interpret a role and what they can bring to it or see what i might like what another actress did in their version better!
Chills.
I saw her on the pre-Broadway tour. I've always said I accepted Angela Lansbury as my personal savior in 1974 at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City. I've seen every Broadway Rose except Ethel and Tyne, and Lansbury is the best. I don't believe I've ever seen a better musical performance in my life. The OKC hicks didn't like it, though, and after the last performance she told stage hands, "Get everything, boys. We are NEVER coming back."
Perfection!!!
I was so fortunate to see her Rose in London 3x as a college student. This was all my budget allowed. Then, pre-Broadway in Phila., then the Winter Garden, & summer stock.I have seen all the other ladies on B'way except Merman. Angela was a FORCE OF NATURE -like a tsunami- from the moment she swept from the back of the theater to her final bow: NO ONE else has came close to this. It was a transformational. Where are the FILM roles for this great actress? Does Dame Maggie have a lock on every role?
People go on how great Staunton is but she's hammy in ber acting. Lansbury nails the madness perfectly
Wonderful,👍💯😎
Thank you so much for this ❤ what the gym
Seeing Angela Lansbury do Rose's Turn would be a religious experience in and of itself, without the rest of the musical. The woman is GOD XD
OMG, the speed of her! I own and treasure the London Cast Recording, which has only one flaw: Some numbers (Some People, Everything's coming up roses) are conducted too slowly.
I would have loved a studio recording of this!
Jule Styne (who wrote the music) was KNOCKED OUT by Angela's Rose. They even put some hot dance numbers that Merman could not do in the original.
poetcomic1 like what numbers
@@UmmOopsytogether
FIERCE
This is how its done
This is why we luv You Tube
She's different from Merman, but just as valid. What a wonderful artist!
Please say this version of Gypsy was recorded entirely on videotape so La Lansbury's performance is preserved!!!!
Sadly it was not. There is an audio recording of the whole show, but only about 12 minutes were taped on film.
@@shawnmulligan2894it’s still so amazing hearing Angela Lansbury in her rage , sadness, and desperation which is why she won the Tony and why she is probably the best rose because she acknowledges the “audience” by bowing after performing roses turn and has this crazy look on her face since it’s all in her head where she finally gets the recognition she longed for
She is wonderful ♥★★★★ The first time Isow her in gaslight walk down the stair to Boivier& Ingrid Bergman That was the first time I see Mam wonderful Angela Lansbury★.
My Gawd. In-freaking-credible! Can you imagine how tired she must be after doing just ONE of those songs?!
I don't care...she blows Lupone out of the water. I wish I'd been alive to see this live. Just look at the phenomenal change in body language around 4:50. Inspirational. Broadway has seldom known better - if at all.
I agree she’s the best rose of them all not too angst and not too extra she’s just perfect and she had the most experience in acting out of all of them and did it in such a realistic and terrifying way that she exceeded Ethel in the role
The correct way to chew scenery.
I know that there are many clips of GYPSY. Howver, what I meant was "clips of the 1973-1974 production".
@artofpoetry The run was only 120 performances on Broadway and she would not extend because of the toll it was taking. She did tour with the show as well.
Sing out, Louise!
So was the 1974 version of Gypsy videotaped in its entirety? Or was it just highlights of the show?
I believe this may be the only bootleg on CZcams for Gypsy at this time. Therefore, I was wondering if these were the only clips u have or if there are more somewhere that wont show in the search.
@RichardSabellico
you were? that is so cool.
Who did you play? What have done since?
The film adaptation should've been made a decade later and should've started Lansbury instead of Russell.
Not quite true:YES, Sondheim turned down Sunset Blvd &by the time Lloyd Weber finished, she was already in MSW. She turned down Roza PERIOD.(She speaks of this on the TV Archives interview. It later flopped w/Georgia Brown).Yes, Family Business flopped BUT only when the1982 revival of MAME flopped did she turn away from B'way. Mitch Leigh, the producer, complained about her lack of "STAR POWER". In fact, HE did no advance or advertising whatsoever. Then she filmed Company of Wolves & onto MSW.
@honggiangvogia PS It is a FACT that Ms. Daly was sick with a flu when that awful recording was made, as was the rest of New York City, including myself. And if you think that you could judge a role like this one from a recording or You Tube clips, then you are sadly mistaken. Everyone is NOT entitled to their opinion. Everyone is entitled to an informed opinion and not their own set of facts.
@honggiangvogia Your profile says that you were not old enough to have seen Tyne Daly so I am curious as to why you think you are entitled to an opinion of her performance? I am old enough to have seen all the Roses except Merman [who was no actress] and I would rank Daly as THE best. She is the best actress of the lot and the ONLY one to subsume her actor personality to create a real character. Why on earth do you think you have the right to make your inane statement?
Why did no one think to film Merman doing this?
@terrryc She chose MSW though. She chose television.
When I was 18 I saw Angela Lansbury as Mama Rose. Why didn't somebody tell me that was gay?
In this version, the play ends here. There is no reappearance by Gypsy Rose Lee/Louise to console her mother or hint at a reconciliation. For me, it's a more preferable and effective way to end the show. Angela Lansbury is incredible here...the closest anyone comes to the iconic Ethel Merman.
+1hoseeman i'm not sure where you heard that, but it's not true...I'm listening to the audio now and I promise you the final scene is there and not one word changed.
I saw Angela Lansbury do it in London twice, and Gypsy did come back on for another small scene. I can't imagine it was changed when it went to Broadway
@@willisthrilled Fact checked. But wouldn't it be better to end it the way I heard it did? And is there a version where it ends this way?
@@1hoseeman the ending is perfect the way it is in my opinion, and no, no major production I’m aware of hasn’t included it.
No it didn’t it ended with them reconciling like how the bette midler movie ended
My least favorite 'Rose' HAD to be Linda Lavin.
Glad she returned to straight acting on Bway.
WOW...damn I was born ino the wrong generation XD
While it is good that angela was able to have a steady 'gig' with Murder, She Wrote, it was also a dreadful waste of a formidable talent...
Can't say if Angela's better than her or not, but I can defenitively say she's better than Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone and Tyne Daly (worst Mama Rose ever, in my opinion).
No, not just "better", she's on top all of them. The woman is a legend. And why she's never made a Dame Commander still beyond me.
@fountainchain126 The Tyne Daly production was actually the best received by critics and rightfully so. Lansbury, God's gif to the stage, was too classy for the role, as powerful as she was. And LuPone's acting was great but her singing...sloppy to say the least. CBS made a major mistake by allowing Bette Midler to chew the scenery and pass over one of their biggest stars. Daly acted the role so magnifciently, without peer.
I've been waiting to see footage of AL on stage since I was six years old. THANK YOU, CZcams!!!!
