- The complete twelve-minute reel of color footage from the first Broadway revival of "Gypsy" (1974). It no longer appeared to be up on CZcams in its entirety, and this is one of those invaluable items that should always be available, especially for those who haven't seen it. Directly from the master.
WOW WOW WOW THIS IS EVERYTHING. she is on FIRE. thank you spiderwoman you are a GIFT
Glad you enjoyed. Yep, she's thrilling.
I saw her four times in London - opening preview, opening night, mid run and last night. All I can say is she delivered this intensity at every performance I saw! Unforgettable splendiferous magic.♥️
Angela Lansbury was and will always be THE TRULY AMAZING THEATRICAL LEGEND ! Thanks for the memories as I was so fortunate to see her in this 1974 Broadway production at the Winter Garden Theatre. WE all love you Angela !!!
God she is so good. Wish I'd been able to see her performing on stage. What an experience that must have been.
I saw this in '74. Great performance!
I have seen her on stage in Sweeny Todd, it was amazing. Before that I wasn't aware she had done stage work I knew her from films and tv.
I saw her in this role in London. I loved her! I wrote her a fan letter and...she wrote me a rather long letter back. I still cherish that letter. Especially because it showed that she had actually read *my* letter and was responding to what I wrote.
It was thrilling beyond words. Years later a friend of mine said he did not like her for the role. He said she was too classy. As brilliant as she was, I have to say he has a point.
@@richardmayora1289she’s probably my favorite it didn’t seem classy in the mental breakdown of roses turn while others play rose with too much angst to the point where I couldn’t really connect with them
I swear to god I get CHILLS when she tears into the final “Everything’s coming up Rose” section of Rose’s Turn (9:55). To me it’s the moment when she finally snaps and you truly wonder how it will end for her... followed by 10:10 where she looks absolutely delirious at the first “for me!”... Lansbury was psychotic there. Ferocious.
The first rose to do that and then Bette and patti and Imelda followed that type of rose
One of the greatest musicals, one of the truly great productions of it and with a truly brilliant performance by a legend!
As always thank you Spiderwoman!
I love, how fast "EVERYTHING'S COMING UP" section in Rose's turn. It shows, that Rose became insane, and Angela played this moment so realistic.
She is an amazing Actress.
Great point, the tempo really adds to the overall effect.
And the bows which go on too long because it's not Angela taking her ovation, it's Rose, screaming in a slient, empty theatre and bowing to the applause in her own head. It's horrific!
@@cpdexterhuxleythats why she’s the best rose and even Stephen, Arthur and Julie styne agreed she did it better than Ethel because that’s how they wanted rose to be portrayed
The best Rose ever and a great production! Thanks for this memory.👍
Agreed
An incredible archive of a truly stunning performance. And ending with the exquisite drama of having three curtains open to reveal Angela Lansbury for her bow! Thank you for this upload!
I saw this twice when I was 13-at a Saturday matinee in a fantastic house seat and then that night from the backstage wings-heaven. Lansbury was unforgettable. Thank you, Donna Elio (the Balloon Girl and Louise understudy) and your wonderful mother for this opportunity!
I'm swooning. I have heard so much of this performance. So glad to see why she was lauded for this performance. I agree! And I'm a diehard fan of Ethel Merman. But I love Angela Lansbury too!
Lansbury sucked the juice out of every lyric .... and it was thrilling beyond words.
Thank you so much for uploading! Someone has this full show recorded - hopefully they will upload it for us all to watch. I'm dying to see it!!!
Wow! I hope so!!!
There’s actually a. Recoding of each son as well as the final scene
She is amazing
What pipes!!! RIP!! ❤️ ❤️
Brilliant, great to see such a legendary performance...but cuts off right before the most famous part! Someone forgot to tell the cameraperson what to look for...or the editor.
What an absolute legend
How is her voice so clear? It is a feat to behold?
Rest well sweet Angela. You were a true class act.
Incredible!! I've never seen this. What a force. So glad to have this footage, thank you. RIP Angela.
What an amazing performer. This clip is wonderful. Thanks.
Ugh she's amazing. I loved her taking it up the octave at the end of "Some People."
that's a fifth not an octave :)
It is, but is an octave above where it would usually finish. Most often it’s performed with a slide from the same note as “not” down to the third

Total Awesomeness !!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
9:57 When the rage turns into near insane, incandescent joy. Scary good.
Wow! She sounds wonderful!
Where do you find these? I saw this production and Lansbury was incredible...Rose's Turn was electrifying. ...and Oh to be at the Winter Garden Theater again! Thanks for this
Spiderwoman themselves is a gift. They’ve masterfully kept their identity a secret as well as their sources so we can keep getting amazing gems like this one.
@@bnorem09 oh yes, I'm sure sources are secret. It was more of a rhetorical question and comment
Wonderful. RIP your star will shine bright in the heavens forever.
this is unreal! Wow! She's electric
Marvelous.
She was in her 40s here....timeless! Can't take my eyes off her.
Thank you so very much for posting this!
That was truly amazing.
Wow! What a gift this is. Thank you for this!
Thanks for posting this!! This is incredible
Bless you!! Thank you so much, as always! I used to have the album of this version. Have a beautiful weekend!
Thank you! You too!
Originally Arthur Laurenis wanted Barbra Streisand to star as Rose, she was now in Hollywood and wouldn't do it. I am so blown away by Angela ,Lansbury I too wish I had seen this
@@zebra2615 Barbara was still a bit young when this revival came out in 73-74 maybe a few years after that she could’ve played her
I love this!!!! Thanks so much!!!!
she did this 8 times a week? good gosh......icon.
My outstanding recollection of seeing her many times was that she always seemed to love to knock herself out in a performance.
Some great Roses in subsequent revivals, but she had the balls to be the only one to do it while legend Ethel Merman was still alive & being the first revival, there must have been the daunting comparisons to Merman she had to overcome. I wonder if Merman ever saw this, I've heard she can be mean, but respectful of genuine talent like she was a good sport when she lost the Tony to Mary Martin in SoM.
She obliterated the place. WOW. So clear to see she's the real deal.
How can you describe this performance? Oh wait... there aren't the words!
May she rest peacefully. 💜 #AngelaLansbury
Rest in peace, legend. 💗
Happy 96. Birthday, Dame Angela
true triple threat diva, amazing!
Damn. Angela Lansbury in her prime!
In Sondheim's first book he talked about a very entertaining diva outburst Angela had with everything's coming up roses where they had to do a little rewriting because Angela insisted on singing on either only upbeats or downbeats I cant remember which, but that doesn't matter because her definition of whichever it was wasnt the real definition and was so far from the real definition it was funny!
He was talking about Ethel Merman, not Lansbury.
Chilling
Wow!
What I would give to see the whole show with her staring.
She was sensational. I saw it on Broadway...and on tour with no scenery and she was thrilling!
@@richardmayora1289how did the musical end from what I saw online it ended with Gypsy laughing at her like in the 2008 with Patti lupone is that true
🎉😮
Is that a young Bonnie Langford as Baby June??
Yes indeed---she made such a hit when Angela's "Gypsy" premiered in London that she was imported for the U.S. tour then Broadway.
Is there any footage of Dolores Grey (Lansbury’s replacement in London) as Rose? From what little audio I’ve heard (not from London but from a Regional production she was in), she was great in the part.
Gray was the best Rose. Period. She had all the best qualities of each of the best Roses. She acted the hell out of the part and her powerful voice was far more appealing than Merman's. I got to stage manage her in Gypsy for a week on tour and her Rose's Turn was just heartbreaking and frightening as hell.
Bye bye Angela. Say hi to Jerry Orbach and David Ogden Stiers for me.
The acting is still much more presentational and mannered...not like the more realistic vein Tyne Daly and Patty Lupone presented it...but her singing voice is much more powerfull and versatile than she is generally given credit for ...amazing!
She was more realistic you can see her breaking in her roses turn which is why she was the first to play rose in London and win a Tony due to what she brought to the role. Ethel singed it but Angela acted it in a realistic manner and singled it brilliantly
I saw her performance.
She was Great.
But, not Ethel Merman.
Different Interpretation of material.
Merman was Magnificent. RIP
3:18 is what happend when u fart on Broadway HAHAHAHAHAHA
