I was a cleaner in a hotel for awhile (I didn't last more than 6 months, finding a corpse was the last straw). Hotels communicate informations like "Don't accept the basketball team of school whatever cause' they leave a huge mess behind". So if your team leaves a mess that'll take hours to clean up, we won't accept you again and we'll warn other hotels to not take you in either.

@@interstellarsnow Not much... I was to clean the room of a man who had paid to stay for about 2 weeks. It had been a few days since we last saw him, so when I got to his room I knocked despite the "do not disturb" sign. No one answers so I knock louder. Still nothing.
So I try calling out, still nothing. So I say loudly that I'm gonna open the door. I unlocked the door but the little chain was in place to keep the door from opening fully. But through the crack I saw feet on the floor and the foulest smell rushed out of there. Security cut the chain and we got inside. Yup, the guy was dead alright and had been for a few days. We called the police, they questioned us a bit and they took the body. We learned a little while later that the guy had overdosed.

I used to work for the hotels in Yellowstone National Park, namely the ones in Old Faithful area.
I'm not, not suppose to tell you this, but if you ask politely you may get invited to accompany the porter to the roof of the hotel to help raise or lower the flags. Four flags are flown from the roof, the US flag and a flag from the three states Yellowstone occupies. This happens at specific times in the morning and earning, and are timed to coincide with an eruption of Old Faithful.
Be polite, they can and will say "no" if you are overly rude or entitled. Keep in mind, this is a special treat offered to those who ask. You will be asked to help with the flags, but the view is well worth it.

I was at a hotel really early in the morning in Buffalo when I was younger going to Disney world. I was going to the continental breakfast and went to get a breakfast sandwich and there wasn't any, and the old lady working there who was very unhappy went and got one for me (I didn't ask, but looked at her as she looked at me). I thanked her, she grunted and then I said have a great day. Even now it amazes me how much of a transition one person can immediately go through, as she genuinely seemed happy, smiled and said you too before going in the back.
Moral of the story, be nice to the service workers especially in the butt crack of morning/night

6:40 I'm currently a hotel housekeeper. Maybe it's different because I work at an extended stay hotel, but we never touch money in a room without a note indicating it's a tip or if it was left behind at checkout. Years ago (probably about 40 years ago) my sister and I were on a vacation to Mexico. The same girl cleaned our room each day we were there. We kept leaving a tip for her each day, but she never took it. We finally caught up with her one day and gave it all to her, then made sure she understood we left it for her. Might have been a language barrier there as she didn't speak English and we didn't speak Spanish. A lot of "sign" language finally worked though. And would leave the same tip at the end of stay with a thank you note (even if they couldn't read it as it was on English).

I'm night audit at a hotel and the main thing to know is a little kindness goes a long way. If you're nice to me and the staff, we will go above and beyond for you. If your bitchy and treat us like shit, we will do the bare minimum until you leave
Also I'm in a prominent college town, yes our chain hotel really costs $400 a night on game days, no I can't give you a discount, yes we are completely booked we have been booked for months in advance.
In the slow season I can give you really good rates.
Unfortunately our lost and found gets cleaned out fairly quick so we don't have chargers or anything like that
We HATE complainers, yes if there is something actually wrong we will fix it or discount/comp your room and profusely apologize, but if its something we cant fix just don't complain. I cant change the layout of the hotel, I can't change the location of the hotel, I cant build a hot tub, I can't build a restaurant next door for you.
Sports groups are awful, the kids are fine they never do much, occasionally they're loud but they'll listen when I tell them to keep it down. The parents though are terrible, I hate dealing with them so much. They get drunk and wreck my lobby and they don't listen. For the love of god it is 3 am stop drinking and go to bed.
Third party bookings are terrible. We all hate dealing with expedia, booking, priceline and whatever ones they own. Please just book with us, it is so much easier and we can price match the rate.
If you do a prepaid res with a third party I still need to get a credit card from you. Yes you already paid but I still need your card on file
If you are paying with other person's card, I will need a credit card authorization form. This includes company cards, parent's cards, kid's cards whatever. If the card you give me does not match the name on your ID, I cannot accept it unless I have a credit card authorization form.
If you're an ass, the staff talk shit about you being your back and we don't forget.
We know about everything that goes on, we know you brought a hooker, we know you're cheating, we know your high on meth
There is a limit to how much housekeeping is willing to do. One time a guest left blood and shit all over the bed, we threw it out and charged him for it.
Fun fact, I know more than you, please stop trying to argue with me about hotel policies or payments after I explain it for the 5th time.
This turned into more of a list of things not to do but I have been working in this industry for too long. This is not my dream, I'm only here cause the pay is good and I can do my schoolwork in the back.

As a former night auditor in a tourist town, everything Elijah here has said is 100% true.
If we like you, we will totally hook you up. If we dont like you, we can totally fuck you over.
We're underpaid, under-appreciated, and we're all fresh out of fucks to give but we're still a team. I once had to physically restrain my co-worker from pounding a drunk hillbilly flat after he called the hotel manager a sand n-word.
All groups are shit, but the worst are sports teams by far, followed by church youth groups, then other church groups, then old lady groups, then wedding groups. Had a baseball group making so much noise in our indoor pool, and adults in there shitfaced and enabling it, that we couldn't even hear phones ringing, let alone hear on the phone at all. The hotel manager called me to check in, heard the noise over the phone, drove down to the hotel himself so we didnt have to bother asking them to quiet it down once more. He threw everyone out of the pool and said he if he had one more noise complaint he was throwing every one of them out. It was night one of a five day stay for them, they still had four days to play in the tournament and every hotel was booked solid.
Old people come down into our lobby to have coughing contests at 4am while they wait two hours for the breakfast room to open.
We worked with Booking.com and Priceline. They made $10 for each booking, we tacked that onto the normal rate. If you call the hotel directly, you automatically save $10. Not to mention whatever discounts we might be able to apply. I could almost always give a 10% discount for whatever reason I feel like, including if I just like you over the phone.
I never once received a tip and never expected to. We're not tip driven, but housekeeping sure appreciates it. The dozen or so times I was offered a tip, I turned it down and said, "leave it for the housekeepers, they really do work hard. I just stand at a desk "
Had a -really- old lady forget her oxygen. She called her doctor, who put her in touch with a local pharmacy that could deliver oxygen to the hotel, but she had so much trouble understanding them on the phone. She was so frail and scared, couldn't slept without oxygen, so went up and got all of the phone numbers, coordinated the delivery and when it was delivered brought it up to her room for her. She tried to give me $20 and I refused to take it. I legitimately worried about her and wanted to help. I just wanted her to feel safe at our hotel and be able to come back to see us.
I have literally been asked on three separate occasions if our indoor pool was inside. We made it a private joke with the other hotels in town. It took me months to realize that they were asking if the indoor was in the same building, or if they had to go outside to a separate building to get to the pool.
And finally, yes we talk to all of the other hotels in town. If we dont have rooms, we want to know their availability so we can recommend people to them. Especially if we like our peers working at those hotels. I knew every night auditor in town, and we all gossip. We all want to be full, even if we aren't rewarded for it, so we hook each other up all the time. It makes our jobs easier, managers are happy, housekeeping gets more tips, everybody is in a better mood... we all benefit.
Bottom line: if we like you, we'll hook you up however we can. We like nice people, we like friendly people, we like people who exude positive vibes and we like helping people. We generally like our hotel and our co-workers and we're team players. We aren't all in it for a buck. We're not all this way, and some hotels are more strict than others, but the majority of us are happy when you're happy.

So in retaliation for the cruise staff cuffing her, she ever so bravely took the most noble of actions. She escaped from her captors, then jumped from the top of the ship into the ocean below... and while still in handcuffs. If that didn't send the cruise line and cruise community a stern message letting them know that she is NOT to be messed witn... I don't know what would
The ship then began making circular racetrack patterns about the ocean, but called off the search after 2 hours... which they knew was a waste of time in the first place, but had to at least make somewhat of an effort to locate the biligerant castaway...
Rumor has it that a family of king crabs saw her and took her in like she was one of their own, and that she spends her days living about the ocean floor and dodging fisherman traps. She even changed her name to Crustacea...

We were on a cruise that we ran into 2 hurricanes, we were stuck out at sea for over 24 hours and passengers were puking all over the place. The whole ship smelled like vomit. They even put vomit bags around the ship, in the hallways, etc because they were cleaning it up all over. We were practically the only passengers that didn't look queasy and didn't get sick, it was a rough ride! A few other couples and us were trying to walk to the front of the ship outside and it was so funny, the winds were so strong, they'd blow you back from where you started. I never saw winds so strong in my life before! We didn't get back to dock until 1am almost 2 days later than it was supposed to dock. We missed our flights, had to get a hotel room, but the airlines were great in switching our flight, they even brought in extra employees at 1am to rebook our flights and the hotel took $150 off our room, we only paid $99, but got that back through our travel insurance. Back in the early nineties, I knew this older couple who lived in my building named Art and Helen. Nice couple, Helen looked like a retired school teacher, and Art was a WW2 war vet. My brother told me this story, that dear old sweet Art and Helen would dine at these very expensive hotel restaurants, then magically find something at fault with the food. Art complained that he was a war vet and a pensioner, and how dare they treat them like this. Management, oh so sorry, dinner is on us, please don't make a scene. Well, dear Art and Helen had been pulling this scam for years at high-end restaurants and hotels.
One evening as per usual, Art and Helen were enjoying their night out, and as per usual, suddenly found something wrong with the food. The problem was, the restaurant manager had heard of them through the restaurant manager snitch line and had come out and instead of offering apologies and a free meal, he told them to wait for a moment. Art and Helen were amazed, they thought maybe? future discount or free meal options? lol. Well, the manager comes back with the assistant managers, and politely informs them, that he had observed Helen on the security cameras, sneaking down, pretending to retrieve a kleenex, and in that kleenex were three dead cockroaches.
Helen would pretend to reach over her plate, and then drop them quickly on the plate, just before Art was ready to go into character. The manager informed them that they had two choices, either pay for the meal, or not pay, and he would call the police and have them arrested in front of all the patrons. They grumbled, denied the accusations, how dare you, but in the end, they caved, paid, and walked out. They tried it again, but by now, all the top-end restaurants knew of Art and Helen, and so their story ended

Do not complain about everything. I used to be a supervisor in a nice hotel and, right after a renovation, we had a couple come to the front desk with a literal list of complaints- things like a scuff on the paint on the wall, a tiny dent in the dresser where it had bumped the door frame when being moved in, a spot on the wall where the pain line wasn’t perfectly straight 🤦🏼‍♀️ Things that had zero impact on their stay.
We told them they would probably be happier at another local hotel (the most expensive one in our resort town) and offered to write down the number for them.
It was our nice way of telling her to go to hell.
Also, if you’re a college student, keep your friends in line, be respectful and clean up after yourself. Oh, and leave tips for everyone who provides you with a service. Spring break is the worst time to live in a resort town and work with tourists. College-age kids are obnoxious, leave truly horrifying messes and don’t leave tips for anyone. I always worked way harder and hardly any money when I worked tipped jobs during spring break.
And yes, “clean” is absolutely a relative term in hotels. I reported one of the cleaners for scrubbing the inside of a toilet with a sponge and then proceeding to use that same sponge to clean the sink and tub. I’m a germaphobe and I don’t trust anything in hotel rooms (even in nice hotels) because housekeepers don’t have much oversight and they aren’t paid enough to care about making your room actually clean as opposed to just smelling/looking clean when they have 15+ rooms to clean between 10am and 4pm.

You're generally better off just tethering on your phone or using a mobile hotspot, though do note that another dirty little secret of the hotel industry is that some hotels will use cell jammers to prevent the use of tethering or hotspots - and yes, jammers are illegal.

If you're going to go on a cruise, two things: Royal Caribbean is definitely the best cruise line overall, especially in regards to the friendliness of the staff (Carnival and Norwegian were just okay), and pick ONE bar to go to. When I was 16 or so, I was on a cruise with my parents, and they hung out in the champagne lounge, tipping generously. So, when I was hanging out with them, the bartender made a drink for me to get a little buzz. Then he later poured us a snifter of Louis XIII Cognac, which ran $150 back then and is $185 now (yes, for one "shot"), to try. Sadly, it just tasted like cheap tequila to me, but, it was an experience I wouldn't have had if my parents went to different bars each night. Hope my friend Hadar is still on the seas making bank, friends, and cocktails for well behaved minors.

I get them after they've been laundered but my coworkers who clean the rooms need to wear gloves because of this and I'm sure worse. I worked front desk in one of the top hotels in my country, can confirm some of these. Working 12 hour night shifts can be exhausting (especially if it's every day for example cause a colleague got sick) so keep in mind we are human too please (no need to tip but even a kind word goes a long way). No amount of bribes or deals will make us give you the key to a VIP's room (this was often done when a male actor or athlete would be staying with us, less often with female ones but happens too, some fans will try everything) Also, if you're a foreigner please respect the law for your own good: it doesn't matter if a substance is allowed in your country, if it's not ok here respect the law or we WILL call the authorities, the hotel wont risk being branded a drug den

I work in the banquets department of a 5 star hotel. 10-15 years ago they switched all the staff from a gratuity-based pay to a flat hourly rate, but they still charge 20% gratuity on all food/beverages. They still use that money to cover our paychecks, but we don't have the ability to make near as much as we used to be able to as a result. On the plus side for the guests, those of us that determine your final bill aren't incentivized to find ways to pad your bill any more... and will happily find things to shave off it if we like a group. So tip the bartenders, barback, and bar manager... one of them is going to be determining your bar bill and can easily make it +/- $1000 of what it should be depending on the size of your group. Oh, and if you're trying to avoid that by choosing the hourly rate for bars rather than the per drink rate, know that what they're charging you is almost always double what you'd pay per drink... if not more.

I worked in maintenance in one of the nicest hotels in NE FL. One time we had a backflow in one of the rooms at the bottom of a plumbing stack. TLDR, the pipes feeding AND TAKING AWAY water / refuse from individual rooms all feed into a single bigger pipe that runs all the way up and down the 'stack' of rooms. So room 101 and 201 and 301 all share a single drain / feed pipe at one point, 102, 202, and 302 all share one, etc. It's a bit of a simplification of complex plumbing but it'll do and maybe you see where this is going. Anyways, if you get a clog in big pipe, at the bottom, like when too many housekeepers flush their rags instead of putting them in the hamper, it doesn't stop the rooms above from flushing. So when we responded to a foul smell complaint on a Monday morning, we opened the door and we were literally up to our ankles in warm brown poop water from the dozen or so rooms above this one. The tub was full of it, and floaters, the toilet was gurgling up like the fountain of youth, and the entire carpet was soaked. To save money, we used shop vacuums and carpet cleaners because we were going to do a remodel that summer rather than replacing the carpet, tile, sheetrock, etc. I took a long shower and bought new boots after that one.

I book hotel rooms, and spent a year in Guest Relations. I've got a lot of these
Don't just start a call asking for us to give you a discount. We aren't allowed to just give you a discount without at least trying to give it to you at regular rate. I CAN give you a 5% discount if it's too much, but you have to let me quote you the base rate first, and then say it's a little high. If you tell me the rate is too much, then I am then allowed to offer you that 5% discount.
If you have a promo code, make sure you tell me. If you are a member of our rewards system, don't just assume I already know this and will just give you that discount. I can not read minds, I don't have access to your account, and I can't see what kind of promo codes were sent to you. I technically do have a list of promo code that I can access, but I CAN NOT give you any of those codes. If you don't have the code, I can not give you the discount.
DO NOT pay through Priceline! They are horrible with your money, and will often refuse to give your money to the hotel, or even refund it back to you. Guest Relations can not issue a refund to you. If you were double charged for the room, you need to call Priceline. Do not let them give you the run around. The hotel can not refund your money unless Priceline sends us the money. Booking.com is another one I recommend staying far FAR away from, as they will give you the run around if you need to cancel your reservation. If you book 3rd party, you must call them. If they send you back to us, and we tell you you have to call them back, we actually do feel bad for you getting the run around. We are just as frustrated as you are, because them refusing to do their own jobs makes it harder for us to do ours.
3rd party booking sites in general are more trouble than they're worth. Some hotel chains price match, so check with the hotel first to see if it's available. You can also check our website. 3rd parties will have their own policies to uphold, and you will be subject to those. If they give you 24 hours to cancel/modify, and we give you a week, you only have that 24 hours to cancel/modify
Book over the phone, not online. I can't begin to tell you how many people I've spoken to who booked online, and booked Advance Purchase without even realizing it. We will only offer you AP if you specifically ask for it. AP has a much different policy than normal, and if you don't read up on it yourself, you're still subject to that policy. Do not yell at us because we can not fix the problem your stupidity caused.
When Guest Relations tells you that you will receive` a call back in 24-48 hours, you actually need to give it the full 48 hours. If you call back the next day, we have to update the notes on your case, and the time for a call back resets. We WILL remind you that the 48 hours has not yet expired. If your case has not gone overdue, we can not escalate further.
If I give you a discount, and you still thing it's to much, please don't just hang up. My next step is to see if there's any other way to lower rate (other discounts, longer length of stay, etc), and if not, I will look at nearby locations to see if any other location has a better rate.
DO NOT INTERUPT ME!!! You may THINK I'm wasting your time with these questions, but all of these questions I'm asking determines the rates, and I CAN NOT quote you a rate until I know what days you are staying, and how many people will be in your room. If you try to rush me, chances are you will actually end up making our call last longer than necessary. If you answer my questions when asked, I can get you booked in 4-5 minutes. If you interrupt me because "you just want the rates", it can take 7-12 minutes for the exact same booking. We want to get through these calls just as quickly as you do
If you aren't sure, ASK. This may seem counterintuitive to my last point, but believe it or not, we actually do want to help you. If you're having a hard time understanding out payment system, or how our rates work, we are MORE than happy to explain it to you.
If the hotel is overbooked, it's overbooked. We can not do anything about that. Ask our FD if there is another location nearby they can move you to. Some will even give you your first night free as an apology for the inconvenience. If they can't, you can call reservations to look for another room. Reservations CAN NOT wave some magic wand to open a room up at a sold out location, and we WILL NOT kick someone else out of their room just because we didn't have a room for you. WE did not oversell the room, the 3RD PARTIES DID! 3rd parties do not have access to our inventory, and they do not know how many rooms we have available.
WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LIE OVER THE PHONES!!! If we tell you there are no charges until check-in, then your card will not be charged until check in. If we tell you that you have until XX:00 to cancel, then as long as you call before then, you WILL be able to cancel. If we tell you that we see a refund was issued, then it's been issued. If we intentionally give you false information, we can lose our jobs.
We are not required to deal with your abuse. If you insult us, curse at us, or call us outside of our names, we WILL hang up. No, we will not be fired for it. We will not be reprimanded for it. My boss will not put up with you BS accusations that I was supposedly rude to you, when they can clearly hear you verbally abusing me on the call recording.
No, my manager can not give you more of a discount than I can. They have the same powers I do when it comes to quoting you your rates.
We WANT to book you a room! We get paid extra for booking, and the amount we get per booking is partially based on how many sales calls we get vs non-sales, and knocking your room down $20 a night does not hurt us. If we know the rate is too much for you, we will bend over backwards to try and bring that rate down to an affordable price for you, because we like money just as much as you do. HOWEVER, if we max out our resources, then that's it. If we tell you there's no way to lower the rates, then we really can't lower the rates more than what we've given you. Asking us 5 more times to see if there's anything else that can be done will not grant us access to some magic button that will bring the room down to to 70% off the base rate. Please stop asking, and let us move on to the next person if you're not going to book the room.

We would have happily helped them if they spent 10 seconds informing the staff about it instead of spending 10 minutes ranting about it online.
As mentioned in this video, most staffs are happy to help you but sometimes make mistakes so just use your privilege as a customer and simply ask instead of acting like nothing`s wrong.

I wasn't housekeeping for a hotel/casino for long nor for evs/porter, the people who go around and pick up trash and clean off the machines. In Laughlin, Nevada, no matter how well you've done cleaning up the rooms or the casino floor or the restrooms. People rarely tip. Cleaning hotel rooms, they expect 14 rooms a day at 35 minutes each. Trashed all the time and no tip. In April our pay only went up to 11.45 I believe it was. Idk what it is now 2 years later. I talked to someone before I left last oct and they were still making the same I believe. To say the staff was miserable was an understatement. Someone hits big on gamble, only waitress or machine attendants were tipped if they did. When I worked as the housekeeping, I stopped caring after entering a room with Oreos smashed everywhere and smeered on the windows. Not even a tip short of the penny under the couch. Big suite room, kids birthday. Took over an hour to clean. I'd never work any of the casinos in Laughlin ever again due to mainly the poor tipping and watching waitresses and others count their hundreds in bills. And we'd pray we get restroom just to hopefully get tipped despite how nasty woman can be. PLEASE tip the staff, because we're already underpaid as heck. I no longer am in Laughlin due to not being able to afford rent there. Been homeless here in Las Vegas for 5 months or so.

If you're smart about it there's actually quite a lot you can do to avoid the cleaning fee. that being said, the inverse is true too, as it is impossible to tell me that I DONT smell it. So if you're a special kind of asshole, guess who's paying that cleaning fee even if you've never smoked a day in your life. And BTW, my boss will side with me every time on this. Since we're a hotel, we also have power over the credit card companies that means you are paying that fee and they will always side with us no matter what.

Nowadays we know that we can sue customers for wrongful feedback and will even call the police on you as this is considered a threat. We even kindly suggested to people to leave the hotel and get a room somewhere "up to their standard" - during the high season when the area is fully booked. So no. Don't complain because you want to be comped unless you are prepared to be kicked out as well.

Oh yes I used to hate covering overnights when parents would bring their coochie critters into to for a sports tourney. The parents partying in the lobby with Thier kids do whatever they want. Weddings are a mixed bags, some are well behaved some are awful.

Here in Asheville North Carolina when you show your ID to get a room if you show your local ID you’re likely to be turned away as most locals here who would want to stay in the Notel Motel are just banging someone else’s wife or smoking meth. I get it, but when my home was flooded, it was impossible to find a place to stay. Asheville is a wonderful place to visit, like a cruise ship come and visit anytime, just don’t buy a house. it puts everybody else out

Despite my friendly appearance towards you, I might not actually be in a good mood. I'm professional enough to not show this directly to you, but this might affect the way I will try to go above and beyond for you as a customer. If I am already not in a good mood and you come and complain about something that in all honesty is your own goddamn fault, I will only do the bare minimum required from our end to assist you, while I would usually do everything in my power to make things right for you, if I am in a good mood.
