I used a shotgun the very first time I had to defend me and my mother from 4 ex-cons who tried to do a home invasion. In retrospect, I’d use an AR instead of a shotgun for multiple threats. Faster follow up shots and more ammo capacity. I would never comply with any magazine limit. In places like L.A. County criminals are literally favored and considered victims of society. I saw a video several years ago where popular calibers and guns were tested inside an empty home. The AR’s .223 penetrated the least, even less than a 9mm.

I can tell you now, if you want an AR for home defense, get something like the S&W M&P-15. I have one and let me tell you, it’s a flarking blast to shoot and it’s my fun time “Pom Pom” gun. And at $650-$700, if god forbid you have to use it to defend your property, it’s a lot easier to swallow when you have to loose it to the police evidence locker!…,Not to mention easier to replace too. Now, at around the same time as you made that comment, I done gone and got a Daniel Defense MK12….It’s of much higher quality, more range, far easier to shoot and will last an entire lifetime AR…But when it comes to home defense…I’m grabbing my M&P cause…Let’s put it this way, my “Sexy Expensive Bit*h” set me back 2.2K already and I’m not gonna loose that expensive fine piece of machinery to the police. Besides, most home defense happen in less than 30 yards, where the “12’s” 400 yard effective range is basically redundant! Yeah, go for the M&P-15. At $650, it’s a lot easier to convince good ol’ SWMBO too!….Rathet than the 2.2K MK12!

@@blakeumthun8128 Well this is an old comment and you probably already got your setup but I would avoid Model 1 Sales. They were good when no one else was around but their builds are not the best quality (I'm actually surprised they are still in business). PSA, BCA, or Combat Armory are pretty much the go to options. The latter two are the cheapest because they are manufacturers who make the parts other companies use.
If you do already have an AR, use a ballistic tip 55grn bullet, such as V-MAX. Reason for that is that they have thinner jackets and faster expansion so they will break apart more readily if it its your dry wall or fence which reduces the issue of collateral. Even if you hit your target, even handgun calibers will often sail straight through the individual and not be stopped unless it hits bone, so "over penetration" while not a huge concern (as shooting at a slight angle up simply by crouching or kneeling mostly eliminates the risk) can be easily be almost completely negated with 5.56 and proper ammo. There is a website called "how I did it" which has a writeup which revealed this capability a decade ago.

    • @bassblaster162
      @bassblaster162 Před 2 lety +24

      Exactly, we'll said.
Due to recent incidents, some of us gun folk have been getting wrapped around the axle about no-knock warrants, and how they should be eliminated. But, I'm more concerned with anyone...ANYONE, who doesn't live in my house, being able to gain forced entry...before I can react appropriately. That is totally unacceptable.
In the most recent no-knock case I've seen, the LEOs had somehow obtained a key, and entered after simply unlocking the front door. No second lock, no deadbolt, not even a slider-chain. Within seconds, the guy who had been allegedly sleeping on the couch was shot dead (yes, he had a gun, but that's beside the point). In the Jayme Closs kidnapping case, the killer got into the family's home very easily, to say the least. In both cases, the home security was sorely lacking.
To your point, my point is this...let's be honest, from a homeowner's perspective...is there really a difference between a chaotic home invasion, and a no-knock warrant being served at the wrong address?
Wow, that went waaaay longer than I thought it would...a thousand apologies.

If you are in a home defense situation there are people in your home that need to leave, in close combat you are talking feet not yards. A 556 round has about 3k velocity at the mussel a target 10 feet away is getting most if not all of that 3k with a round designed to either fragment or mushroom at impact. If a piece does get through most of the energy is gone in that round but before it leaves it has torn up the target with a 4 to 6 inch cavity and the subject will probably die from the shock to the system or bleed out.

One thing I gotta laugh at is all the fancy ARs with all the fancy attachments that folks think they need for home defense. I have a DPMS bottom with a Windom Weaponry upper and it has only the regular A2 "carry handle" rear sight and the A post front sight. Nothing fancy like a red dot sight and it's not even sighted in on the iron sights. Here's a fact for ya, at the distances you'd face at a home defense situation not only does it not need to be sighted in, but you don't even need to aim it. I could shoot from the hip and down an intruder or just hold it up normally and not really look through the sights. When I used to play paintball, every time me and the buddies I played with asked me to see if I could hit a sapling (about 9 inches in diameter) about 30 yards away shooting from the hip and hit it within two shots. It was a tradition and at first some of the guys would bet me that I could not hit it. They learned quickly not to bet me. But go ahead, buy a $1,500.00 AR and $200.00 red dots, it's your money. I don't need anything that fancy.

I actually have .223 soft lead tip rounds, and in a 40 round magazine, I am definitely set up for multiple home invaders. I like to throw out with the use of a doorbell camera and replacing the two 1/2 in screws in my deadbolt flash with 3 in screws act as a deterrent and with layers of deterrents like that leaves less doubt that the people invading really want to get into my home to do harm.

Thanks Massad for an enlightening video that I stumbled across (I've now subscribed!).
I found the video very interesting and it emphasised many points and put these into stark perspective for me.
As you went through the points of the Ar-15, I was mentally ticking off in my mind how they applied to another Personal Defence Weapon and it was uncanny how similar the overall comparison was!
I refer of course to the FN PS90 (particularly the SBR version).
In fact, I would say the PS90 SBR has several distinct advantages over the AR-15 - eg bigger magazine, shorter, lower recoil, downward ejection of casings, fewer "sticky-out bits, like the long magazine of the AR-15, etc. The 5,7 x 28mm round is pretty effective (and works from the same basic principle), lighter, and now also NATO-approved.
Over-penetration is even less of an issue.
Another issue is the handgun you mentioned in the video. If one owns a PS90, one can have an FN Five seveN pistol (preferably a Mk3 MRD), and use exactly the same 5,7mm ammunition!
    This greatly simplifies matters.
You also mentioned use for all home members - well here both these FN weapons excel as they would be MUCH easier to master than eg an AR-15 and a 9mm! (Believe me I've owned both of these [Ruger Mini 14 and a FN Browning Hi-Power] ) Smaller people and even children can become reasonably proficient with the Five seveN in a fraction of the time taken for say, the 9mm.
I was wondering if you had ever considered doing a similar video on the PS90 SBR dealing with the same. or similar, contents? I would be very interested in your opinion on this.
    Thanks again Massad!
