Light being asexual is one more attribute of his that makes it consistent with the idea that from such a young and impressionable age he's bored by most (if not all) earthly things and is not interested in reaping the benefits of his popularity with girls as a good example. This boredom is what makes us believe that he's engages only when the Death Note is involved
A fun little detail I just noticed about the rules of the Death Note is that the time limit of 40 seconds, 6 and 40 seconds (400 seconds total) relates to the superstition in Japanese and Chinese culture that the number 4 is tied to Death. This is probably the reason why the time limit for writing cause of death, details, etc. has such a seemingly arbitrary number.
I always thought it was kind of odd that L never went back to revisit that tape where Misa's hair moved for seemingly no reason after learning Shinigami not only exist, but can interact with the physical world while remaining unseen by humans who haven't touched their notebook. After he met Rem himself you'd think he'd go back to that video. I can understand that the rest of the task force probably wouldn't think of it, but you'd think it'd occur to L at some point. The only explanation I can think of is that Shinigami appear on live footage if you've touched a notebook (like with Mello seeing Sidoh), but you can't see them in recordings, or you can only see them chronologically from the point at which you touched the notebook, so they'd still be invisible to you in old recordings.

I was wondering if they could even appear on tapes - but I totally forgot about Mello and Sidoh! So, they definitely can. It's possible he thought it was some breeze or something. There's a lot of time between that moment and finally meeting Rem and a lot of other things were going on then as well. Genius or not L isn't perfect.
@@kazekamiha It's not impossible, but the room looked to have been completely enclosed so a breeze seems unlikely, and one from something like air conditioning would be presumably be continuous. I could buy L just not thinking of it later on, though it's odd (from a writing POV) to make a thing of L noticing the movement then just never bringing it up again, especially when it could have been a decisive piece of evidence.

I doubt the hair moving was suspicious enough for L to consider going back to it, it only happened for a second. It would make more sense however if he were to go back and check the surveillance he had over Light's room. That being said it wouldn't reveal anything either since Rem is connected to Light's notebook and Ryuk was the one in Light's room, so they still wouldn't find anything through the camera surveillance.
For the six minutes forty second rule, I think its purpose is just for Shinigamis. You're right that it can be circumvented with some forethought, but the average Shinigami doesn't use a notebook like that. So I can imagine a situation where a Shinigami wants to kill someone by a piranha attack, then changes their mind and wants someone to die in a freak weather accident.
L is an absolute genius and personally a huge role model for me. As a side note, L was actually pretty much confirmed by the creators to be Asexual. Not entirely sure about Light. Being Asexual and Aromantic myself, it seems possible Light could also be Asexual. It's a good catch, because I didn't pick up on it when I first watched through this series.
This had to be one of the largest display of mindgames in the show. Literally back to back one ups. (Interesting notes from the last few eps: Ryuk does show that he's not on Light's side truly he only hinted at that Ray was following him only because it was "creeping him out", but he never told Light about Kanzo Mogi) (Light and Misa messed up since they said in the manga and anime, "spread this power" it was easy for L to deduce that that wasn't the case. It doesn't explain why Kira wouldn't have already done that before passing on his powers would have gotten him out of many situations in the past. Thus he concluded that they already made contact and that Light told the Second Kira (MIsa) what to say in order to throw a curve ball. He's almost mocking Light in that entire segment leading up until he calls him his only friend.) As for the friend comment there's some slight misunderstanding about the intent of it. Through out the show the respect that L and Light have for each other's intelligence and abilities is an important aspect of their relationship in the series. Despite their intense rivalry, they both recognize that the other is a worthy opponent, and they both have a deep understanding of the other's intelligence and strategic thinking. L, for example, recognizes that the person behind the mysterious deaths is a genius, and he becomes obsessed with catching the killer. He spends a lot of time studying the case and trying to figure out the killer's identity and motivation. He also recognizes that the killer is highly intelligent and strategic, and he is aware that it will be a difficult task to catch him. He is always one step behind Light and he always admires him for his intelligence and his ability to outsmart him. Similarly, Light also recognizes L's intelligence and abilities. He sees L as the only person who truly understands him and his goals, and he recognizes that L is a worthy opponent. Light is always aware of L's movements and he always anticipates his next step, which makes him respect L's intelligence and his ability to understand his plans. In this way, both L and Light respect each other as intelligent and strategic thinkers. They both understand that the other is a worthy opponent, and they both have a deep understanding of the other's intelligence and abilities. This respect for each other's intelligence and abilities is a key aspect of their relationship in the series. So the meaning of this "only friend" comment is that L is mocking Light in the same way that Light was planning to gain his trust all the way back in graduation ceremony. "If its my friendship he wants I'll give it to him", its the reason Light is so mad and shaken up over it. He's literally throwing it in his face. Its one of those moments in Death Note were only Light and L know what they are talking about and can literally mock each in front of the task force without them following. In how to read its stated that L has no friends and never considered him to be a friend. He actually dislikes him Also sorry for the long comment glad you're back man!
This is minor detail, but I much prefer how the 2006 Japanese, Live-action film depicted L creeping around Amane Misa, stealing her phone, and acting all shocked that some weirdo (yeah... LOL) touched Misa's "tushy", her own words in the Sub version of the film, demanding to know WHO had done it, before handing Misa a Lollipop to comfort her, after she was distressed by the whole thing, which was pretty sweet of him, won't lie. Also, his movements wasn't exaggerated AT ALL, the way it was in the Anime series, as he simply walked around Misa, whilst demanding to know who put his/her hands on her. Haha
L is pretty genius and also just enough of a creep to play off the entire collage situation he pacifically recalls that she was in August’s edition of 18 (which I assume is some sort of modeling magazine) so when misa reacts it just seems like his a bit of a perv (light buys it too at first) and that’s ultimately what saved his life….the carefully constructed occurrence using is odd ball appearance and absent minded genius persona to his advantage. If light was in L’s position it would completely not work light is too well adjusted to social mannerisms and to handsome to get away with being a creep where with L it’s seen as cute and inoffensive for light it would be seen as a largely disgusting and off putting occurrence. If DN taught me one thing it’s to play to your stereotypes and what people think of you
While the blindfold and the straightjacket are necessary for their own protection (as far as they know) that scene where L gives the go ahead to torture Misa made me realize L was in no way a good guy either. I was most surprised the chief and the other cops allowed that without even really protesting, made me wonder how messed up the justice system in Japan is (and given the high conviction rate - ya it's pretty bad; guilty until proven innocent and even then you're going to jail). Also, it is very strange that in the same few minutes you have the chief saying there's enough physical evidence to convict her and Light saying if she doesn't remember anything they'd have to let her go...and given that's exactly what happens then that physical evidence can't be that strong, which makes sense, that hair should be Misa's friends, not Misa's - but that also means that they're given the go ahead on torturing her to get her to give up Kira's identity without sufficient evidence that they're even right that she's the 2nd Kira On a lighter note, Light being Ace is a pretty good read on him but it is contradicted by a panel in the manga where he finds her cute and then scolds himself internally not to actually fall for her

I think the 40 seconds and 6 minute 40 second restrictions might be a special shinigami thing. Maybe a sacred number or something put in place by the creators of the death notes. Light just outplayed that. Ryuk was really surprised when Light discovered this workaround. Ryuk being probably the one most interested in humans he would probably know of any creative workarounds for the death note rules and shinigami don't really have a reason to experiment with workarounds. Would be interesting to know who created the death notes and why there are any rules at all if they're just for the shinigami.
The number four is associated with death and therefore considered bad luck in a lot of Asian cultures, including Japanese. Six minutes and forty seconds is four hundred seconds. Also triple six is bad luck because Christianity is also a fairly common religion there, and six minutes and forty seconds as a decimal is 6.66…→ minutes.
The way that L had the blue light around him is genuinely one of the best shots from this show 👌. He looks so creepy but so cool, and the shadows around his eyes omg 😌. The look on his face just tells you that he knows everything.
I think the 'If I die Light did it' comment was less based on any evidence L had at the moment and more intuition. He has enough information to know something is up but not enough to know anything for sure so it's a way to cover his ass. But again, Misa's screw ups compile here. Once more she's smarter then most people think *BUT SHE CAN'T KEEP IT IN HER PANTIES! NOT EVEN FOR FIVE MINUTES!!!* Misa's worst enemy, in the end, is Misa.
with him being literally the best detective in the world it makes sense that he'd be able to "read the room" so to speak. but i do think his comment was more than just intuition, lights been at the centre of the kira case the entire time. there are just too many coincidences for L to ignore, he didnt have any real evidence ofc but i think he basically knew. regarding misa's worst enemy, its a well known psychological consequence of low self-esteem to seek a lot of external validation which misa definitely does through her job and light. i wonder if misa being her own worst enemy is more literal than it first seems.
@@masync183 Haven't thought of that in regards to her self-esteem. After all we only meet her Post-Kira and our only given reason for what she does is 'Kira did in the guy who killed her parents'. That's possible. That said she's also a bit bratty, so that can be it too. I do hold to the intuition bit however; I imagine a detective with his experience knows when to listen to his gut; that said everything he does know for sure does make sure he listens to what his gut says.
"Misa's worst enemy, in the end, is Misa." I think she's not the only one that applies to. Light's morality was ultimately so susceptible to boredom and stagnation that it's badly undermined and we got this mess. He's more subtle about the own worst enemy thing, but eventually, he loses sense of adaptation and his bragging catches up to him.
When Light refers to L as Ryuzaki or Ryuga's last day alive, he is referring to the fact that the L that introduced himself might not be the real L. It's gone over a little more in detail in the manga but L has Watari act as L to make sure Light doesn't kill him seeing as Light would still think that if Ryuzaki isn't the real L, killing him would be like announcing to the real L that he is Kira. Also Rem can't give Light L's real name, it's forbidden for shinigami to do so.

Okay after rewatching the series on a whim while playing a game, I realized why the memories taken are inconsistent. It's because, as Ryuk hints at, and Rem all but says when Misa is giving up her memories, is that the Shinigami CHOOSES which memories are taken from them, as such it explains why Misa would suddenly forget the torture and other things, because Rem didn't want her to keep those memories. Edit: The reasoning is that Rem says that she would make sure that Misa would keep her memories of Light, and the only way she could make that promise if she knew which memories were being taken.
I love the “Light is ace” theory, and honestly, I could fuckin see it (though I do ship him hard with L 😂) I’m really glad you mentioned the voice acting. This has to be one of the best dubs of all time, imo. Misa’s actress kills it in particular. Even if the voice is a bit annoying, it really fits her character.
The English dub is...okay. I watched the series in its original Japanese and I have to say I prefer it over the English dub. I personally think Wolf's Rain did a much better job with the English dub. I'm not saying the English dub of Death Note is terrible, by no means. But some lines, especially by Light, sound very forced and edgy. It gets kind of cringy for me.

When you ask about that one question about L Lawliet being justified by having Misa Amane tied up, it made me think. Yes, I kinda think Misa does deserve to be tied up. She killed random people to prove her point. Misa killed innocent cop(Ukita) in front of a TV station. Also, she could've killed Aizawa, with how impulsive she is, of course she would do it. I can't help but imagine how heartbreaking it would be for his family. Would Misa really be ok with killing a parent of a child? If she does end being ok with that idea, then I do believe that in way, yes as cold as this sounds I do think that Misa should be bondaged and have Watari torture her. Also I can't help but ask another question...What would her reaction be like, upon seeing Near? (A.k.a a boy who is like what? 15-17? Idk. But he is an orphan!!! I’m honestly leaning towards Code Geass, though - mostly because I have a script for the first episode already written (from back in November.) Plus, Geass is my second favorite anime. My gripe is that he could have just asked REM to give him Misa’s captors names. Light would of been able and known to kill them all and everything would have been solved.
For 18:15 so in the manga light actually says "i shouldve had her destroy all the remaining tapes instead of sending out another tape" because ryuzaki said they found pollen from rare flowers not native to the region on the adhesive on the envelopes, and when crossed with where they were mailed from they pinpointed her house.
The reason for the 6 minute and 40 second rule is in the case of you controlling them. For example you want to control them longer or adapt to the situation.
If Rem actually killed Misa per her request, she would have definitely killed Light right after too. I wonder what kind of conclusion L would of made of both suspect dying all the sudden.
At 6:00 its also worth considering, that in Lights perspective he stands in a rather wide/stable roof, whilst L stands in a very narrow platform. I think it symbolises that Light thinks he has enough room/safety to dribble a bit and even to fuck up once or twice, nd he also thinks that L has no possibility to make any move, or to make just a simple mistake cuz then he'd fall to his death. So in shorter version: after the great news Light overestimetes his and underastimates L's position and thier power relations. And exactly this overconfidance led to Misa getting arrested and to the following damage control (every single minute till Light regains his memories)
I'll be honest, I've never seen that anime! My fiancé and I have it on our watchlist though. But, I'll be 100% transparent with you - if I did do it, it wouldn't be for a looooong time. I have a few other anime I wanna do after Death Note.
I think he did it because he wanted it for himself so he could be the one to write it down when the time came. Misa, being the airhead that she is, could’ve easily forgotten what his name was. Like, I’ve had instances where I’ve met people - had full on conversations - and within a few minutes of leaving them I have trouble remembering their name. Especially when I worked in customer service and was speaking to a lot of people everyday.

How did L know that the second Kira could figure out his name and give it to light? All knew was they didn’t need a name to kill not that they could see people’s names over their heads.
It's a bit confusing cause that 'hair flick' wasn't in the manga. I facepalmed seeing that in the anime (and having L noticed it) since I knew it's almost a plothole that nothing came of it, seeing how clever L is.
I don't understand the logistical details around Misa's tapes. In the episode where she showed up, she seems to have planned it all out carefully. Then it turns out there are fingerprints on the tapes, but then it turns out those are her friend's fingerprints. (But this was never followed up on??) THEN it turns out Misa's hair is on the tape that was used to wrap the tapes. Huh? I feel like I'm missing something here. What exactly did Misa do, to let her hair end up on the tapes, when she was otherwise so careful? Who exactly did what to the tapes at what time? I'm so confused. I haven't rewatched the show in a long time, so maybe I'm missing something, but I was confused by this when I watched the show years ago, and I am still confused revisiting the details via your review here.
i guess if you realllly stretch you could justify that as misa being the one to get the equipment they needed together. i doubt her friend just had everything they'd need to make those tapes on hand so idk, maybe misa's hair fell into the envelope? eh. as great as deathnote is its still got a story to tell so some logical concessions have to be made.
I agree, it was always strange, they specifically go over how she didn't touch the tapes and then there's hair on the envelopes? Pretty sure in the flashback they show the friend putting the tapes in the envelopes so wtf Maybe the evidence isn't as strong as the chief suggests which is why they have to let her go when she loses her memory? Because if the evidence WAS that strong she wouldn't have to remember anything in order to convict her
I don't think the 6 min 40 sec rule on writing details of death was really something meant as a restriction or to be bypassed. I always thought it was just like the 40 second rule -- you have 40 seconds to decide if you want to add any more details, and if so, you can have an extra 6 minutes to write them out. Otherwise, heart attack. More of an "in the heat of the moment" thing, especially since shinigami don't have much reason to plan out deaths in advance anyway. That's just how long it takes. On the other hand, someone wanting to make some crazy death plans like Light always has that freedom to do the extra crazy stuff if they think of it.
Light being asexual is an interesting take on the character. I've always seen him as gay, personally. Him not being remotely interested in women unless it's for some manipulation he's pulling, and yet having some really tense scenes with L later in the show, leans me to believe he's interested in men. Maybe he's a bi king? I love the take that he may be ace, though, because it can explain some of the things he seems to feel with more clarity.

The imagery of Light collapsing from the building, taking a hard blow from L shows that 1 of the reasons why DN is so effective is cuz of visualizing things in a way that u wouldn't think be impressive or smth to boast about. While w Tadaka in the class, I don't think his arm should be moving like that just by spinning his pen.
You know really thinking about it (before I finish watching this video) Light could of have just as easily had rem come with him since know one could see her and say “don’t kill him but tell me his name or kill him when I say it’s ok” and it’s like what’s stopping him? Rem was gonna do what he said for Misa anyways so it’s not like she would deny it
Part of the reason he can't JUST kill L is because he'd have to kill the entire task force and he'd have trouble killing his father. He'd do it if he had to, but if he can find another way, he would. Also if L dies of a heart attack right after Light meets with him (with Rem behind him), it'd be suspicious. Also, if Light tries to make up a plan where he controls L and has him appear on live television or something, it's unclear if the Notebook could pull that off. Is that something L would ordinarily do? If not, he'd drop dead on the spot (again, suspicious).

The only explanation I can think of is that Shinigami appear on live footage if you've touched a notebook (like with Mello seeing Sidoh), but you can't see them in recordings, or you can only see them chronologically from the point at which you touched the notebook, so they'd still be invisible to you in old recordings.
YESSS!! That's actually something I plan on bringing up in the future! Especially considering Watari and L made the decision to delete the tapes. I was wondering if they could even appear on tapes - but I totally forgot about Mello and Sidoh! So, they definitely can. I think you might be right about that - but, it also seems kind of weird that they can't see them in old footage.

It's possible he thought it was some breeze or something. There's a lot of time between that moment and finally meeting Rem and a lot of other things were going on then as well. Genius or not L isn't perfect.
@@kazekamiha It's not impossible, but the room looked to have been completely enclosed so a breeze seems unlikely, and one from something like air conditioning would be presumably be continuous.
I could buy L just not thinking of it later on, though it's odd (from a writing POV) to make a thing of L noticing the movement then just never bringing it up again, especially when it could have been a decisive piece of evidence.
@@sealsaregood5146 I think it's to help L accept the existence of shinigami more readily later, a little bit of evidence of the supernatural to stow away on the back burner, nothing decisive, but another piece to add - like both Kira's using the term shinigami
I doubt the hair moving was suspicious enough for L to consider going back to it, it only happened for a second. It would make more sense however if he were to go back and check the surveillance he had over Light's room. That being said it wouldn't reveal anything either since Rem is connected to Light's notebook and Ryuk was the one in Light's room, so they still wouldn't find anything through the camera surveillance.
For the six minutes forty second rule, I think its purpose is just for Shinigamis. You're right that it can be circumvented with some forethought, but the average Shinigami doesn't use a notebook like that.
So I can imagine a situation where a Shinigami wants to kill someone by a piranha attack, then changes their mind and wants someone to die in a freak weather accident.

As a side note, L was actually pretty much confirmed by the creators to be Asexual. Not entirely sure about Light. Being Asexual and Aromantic myself, it seems possible Light could also be Asexual. It's a good catch, because I didn't pick up on it when I first watched through this series.

This had to be one of the largest display of mindgames in the show. Literally back to back one ups.
(Interesting notes from the last few eps: Ryuk does show that he's not on Light's side truly he only hinted at that Ray was following him only because it was "creeping him out", but he never told Light about Kanzo Mogi)
(Light and Misa messed up since they said in the manga and anime, "spread this power" it was easy for L to deduce that that wasn't the case. It doesn't explain why Kira wouldn't have already done that before passing on his powers would have gotten him out of many situations in the past. Thus he concluded that they already made contact and that Light told the Second Kira (MIsa) what to say in order to throw a curve ball. He's almost mocking Light in that entire segment leading up until he calls him his only friend.)
As for the friend comment there's some slight misunderstanding about the intent of it.
Through out the show the respect that L and Light have for each other's intelligence and abilities is an important aspect of their relationship in the series. Despite their intense rivalry, they both recognize that the other is a worthy opponent, and they both have a deep understanding of the other's intelligence and strategic thinking.
L, for example, recognizes that the person behind the mysterious deaths is a genius, and he becomes obsessed with catching the killer. He spends a lot of time studying the case and trying to figure out the killer's identity and motivation. He also recognizes that the killer is highly intelligent and strategic, and he is aware that it will be a difficult task to catch him. He is always one step behind Light and he always admires him for his intelligence and his ability to outsmart him.
Similarly, Light also recognizes L's intelligence and abilities. He sees L as the only person who truly understands him and his goals, and he recognizes that L is a worthy opponent. Light is always aware of L's movements and he always anticipates his next step, which makes him respect L's intelligence and his ability to understand his plans.
In this way, both L and Light respect each other as intelligent and strategic thinkers. They both understand that the other is a worthy opponent, and they both have a deep understanding of the other's intelligence and abilities. This respect for each other's intelligence and abilities is a key aspect of their relationship in the series.
So the meaning of this "only friend" comment is that L is mocking Light in the same way that Light was planning to gain his trust all the way back in graduation ceremony. "If its my friendship he wants I'll give it to him", its the reason Light is so mad and shaken up over it. He's literally throwing it in his face. Its one of those moments in Death Note were only Light and L know what they are talking about and can literally mock each in front of the task force without them following. In how to read its stated that L has no friends and never considered him to be a friend. He actually dislikes him

When I watched the show and Light said "What do you mean hello?" I started dying man 💀
This is minor detail, but I much prefer how the 2006 Japanese, Live-action film depicted L creeping around Amane Misa, stealing her phone, and acting all shocked that some weirdo (yeah... LOL) touched Misa's "tushy", her own words in the Sub version of the film, demanding to know WHO had done it, before handing Misa a Lollipop to comfort her, after she was distressed by the whole thing, which was pretty sweet of him, won't lie. Also, his movements wasn't exaggerated AT ALL, the way it was in the Anime series, as he simply walked around Misa, whilst demanding to know who put his/her hands on her. Haha
L is pretty genius and also just enough of a creep to play off the entire collage situation he pacifically recalls that she was in August’s edition of 18 (which I assume is some sort of modeling magazine) so when misa reacts it just seems like his a bit of a perv (light buys it too at first) and that’s ultimately what saved his life….the carefully constructed occurrence using is odd ball appearance and absent minded genius persona to his advantage. If light was in L’s position it would completely not work light is too well adjusted to social mannerisms and to handsome to get away with being a creep where with L it’s seen as cute and inoffensive for light it would be seen as a largely disgusting and off putting occurrence. If DN taught me one thing it’s to play to your stereotypes and what people think of you
While the blindfold and the straightjacket are necessary for their own protection (as far as they know) that scene where L gives the go ahead to torture Misa made me realize L was in no way a good guy either. I was most surprised the chief and the other cops allowed that without even really protesting, made me wonder how messed up the justice system in Japan is (and given the high conviction rate - ya it's pretty bad; guilty until proven innocent and even then you're going to jail).
Also, it is very strange that in the same few minutes you have the chief saying there's enough physical evidence to convict her and Light saying if she doesn't remember anything they'd have to let her go...and given that's exactly what happens then that physical evidence can't be that strong, which makes sense, that hair should be Misa's friends, not Misa's - but that also means that they're given the go ahead on torturing her to get her to give up Kira's identity without sufficient evidence that they're even right that she's the 2nd Kira
On a lighter note, Light being Ace is a pretty good read on him but it is contradicted by a panel in the manga where he finds her cute and then scolds himself internally not to actually fall for her

I think the 40 seconds and 6 minute 40 second restrictions might be a special shinigami thing. Maybe a sacred number or something put in place by the creators of the death notes. Light just outplayed that. Ryuk was really surprised when Light discovered this workaround. Ryuk being probably the one most interested in humans he would probably know of any creative workarounds for the death note rules and shinigami don't really have a reason to experiment with workarounds.
Would be interesting to know who created the death notes and why there are any rules at all if they're just for the shinigami.
The number four is associated with death and therefore considered bad luck in a lot of Asian cultures, including Japanese. Six minutes and forty seconds is four hundred seconds. Also triple six is bad luck because Christianity is also a fairly common religion there, and six minutes and forty seconds as a decimal is 6.66…→ minutes.
The way that L had the blue light around him is genuinely one of the best shots from this show 👌. He looks so creepy but so cool, and the shadows around his eyes omg 😌. The look on his face just tells you that he knows everything.
I think the 'If I die Light did it' comment was less based on any evidence L had at the moment and more intuition. He has enough information to know something is up but not enough to know anything for sure so it's a way to cover his ass.
But again, Misa's screw ups compile here. Once more she's smarter then most people think *BUT SHE CAN'T KEEP IT IN HER PANTIES! NOT EVEN FOR FIVE MINUTES!!!*

with him being literally the best detective in the world it makes sense that he'd be able to "read the room" so to speak. but i do think his comment was more than just intuition, lights been at the centre of the kira case the entire time. there are just too many coincidences for L to ignore, he didnt have any real evidence ofc but i think he basically knew. regarding misa's worst enemy, its a well known psychological consequence of low self-esteem to seek a lot of external validation which misa definitely does through her job and light. i wonder if misa being her own worst enemy is more literal than it first seems.
@@masync183 Haven't thought of that in regards to her self-esteem. After all we only meet her Post-Kira and our only given reason for what she does is 'Kira did in the guy who killed her parents'. That's possible. That said she's also a bit bratty, so that can be it too.
I do hold to the intuition bit however; I imagine a detective with his experience knows when to listen to his gut; that said everything he does know for sure does make sure he listens to what his gut says.

Light's morality was ultimately so susceptible to boredom and stagnation that it's badly undermined and we got this mess. He's more subtle about the own worst enemy thing, but eventually, he loses sense of adaptation and his bragging catches up to him.

When Light refers to L as Ryuzaki or Ryuga's last day alive, he is referring to the fact that the L that introduced himself might not be the real L. It's gone over a little more in detail in the manga but L has Watari act as L to make sure Light doesn't kill him seeing as Light would still think that if Ryuzaki isn't the real L, killing him would be like announcing to the real L that he is Kira.
Also Rem can't give Light L's real name, it's forbidden for shinigami to do so.

Okay after rewatching the series on a whim while playing a game, I realized why the memories taken are inconsistent. It's because, as Ryuk hints at, and Rem all but says when Misa is giving up her memories, is that the Shinigami CHOOSES which memories are taken from them, as such it explains why Misa would suddenly forget the torture and other things, because Rem didn't want her to keep those memories.
Edit: The reasoning is that Rem says that she would make sure that Misa would keep her memories of Light, and the only way she could make that promise if she knew which memories were being taken.

The English dub is...okay. I watched the series in its original Japanese and I have to say I prefer it over the English dub. I personally think Wolf's Rain did a much better job with the English dub. I'm not saying the English dub of Death Note is terrible, by no means. But some lines, especially by Light, sound very forced and edgy. It gets kind of cringy for me.

When you ask about that one question about L Lawliet being justified by having Misa Amane tied up, it made me think. Yes, I kinda think Misa does deserve to be tied up. She killed random people to prove her point. Misa killed innocent cop(Ukita) in front of a TV station. Also, she could've killed Aizawa, with how impulsive she is, of course she would do it. I can't help but imagine how heartbreaking it would be for his family. Would Misa really be ok with killing a parent of a child? I’m thinking either Code Geass, Attack on Titan, or FMA: Brotherhood. I’m honestly leaning towards Code Geass, though - mostly because I have a script for the first episode already written (from back in November.) Plus, Geass is my second favorite anime. But, we’ll see what happens.

something i just realized about rem threatening to kill light. isnt ryuk supposed to be the one to do that as per the rules of the deathnote? could rem override that one? and if she somehow can then whats the point of the rule at all? in a way, doesnt this mean that light is literally immortal until ryuk decides to kill him? meaning that his life depends on making sure that he's entertaining ryuk like some weird court jester which is kind of cool because the dynamic between them definitely feels like light is the top and ryuk is the bottom but if the above is true, ryuk is basically just watching the show and can end it whenever he gets bored. hes the one with all the real power in their relationship, light is basically a powerbottom for ryuk.

The reason for the 6 minute and 40 second rule is in the case of you controlling them. For example you want to control them longer or adapt to the situation.
If Rem actually killed Misa per her request, she would have definitely killed Light right after too.
I wonder what kind of conclusion L would of made of both suspect dying all the sudden.
At 6:00 its also worth considering, that in Lights perspective he stands in a rather wide/stable roof, whilst L stands in a very narrow platform. I think it symbolises that Light thinks he has enough room/safety to dribble a bit and even to fuck up once or twice, nd he also thinks that L has no possibility to make any move, or to make just a simple mistake cuz then he'd fall to his death.
So in shorter version: after the great news Light overestimetes his and underastimates L's position and thier power relations.
And exactly this overconfidance led to Misa getting arrested and to the following damage control (every single minute till Light regains his memories)

I think he did it because he wanted it for himself so he could be the one to write it down when the time came. Misa, being the airhead that she is, could’ve easily forgotten what his name was.
Like, I’ve had instances where I’ve met people - had full on conversations - and within a few minutes of leaving them I have trouble remembering their name. Especially when I worked in customer service and was speaking to a lot of people everyday.

It's a bit confusing cause that 'hair flick' wasn't in the manga. I facepalmed seeing that in the anime (and having L noticed it) since I knew it's almost a plothole that nothing came of it, seeing how clever L is.
I don't understand the logistical details around Misa's tapes. In the episode where she showed up, she seems to have planned it all out carefully. Then it turns out there are fingerprints on the tapes, but then it turns out those are her friend's fingerprints. (But this was never followed up on??) THEN it turns out Misa's hair is on the tape that was used to wrap the tapes. Huh? I feel like I'm missing something here. What exactly did Misa do, to let her hair end up on the tapes, when she was otherwise so careful? Who exactly did what to the tapes at what time? I'm so confused. I haven't rewatched the show in a long time, so maybe I'm missing something, but I was confused by this when I watched the show years ago, and I am still confused revisiting the details via your review here.
i guess if you realllly stretch you could justify that as misa being the one to get the equipment they needed together. i doubt her friend just had everything they'd need to make those tapes on hand so idk, maybe misa's hair fell into the envelope? eh. as great as deathnote is its still got a story to tell so some logical concessions have to be made.

I don't think the 6 min 40 sec rule on writing details of death was really something meant as a restriction or to be bypassed. I always thought it was just like the 40 second rule -- you have 40 seconds to decide if you want to add any more details, and if so, you can have an extra 6 minutes to write them out. Otherwise, heart attack. More of an "in the heat of the moment" thing, especially since shinigami don't have much reason to plan out deaths in advance anyway. That's just how long it takes.
On the other hand, someone wanting to make some crazy death plans like Light always has that freedom to do the extra crazy stuff if they think of it.
Light being asexual is an interesting take on the character. I've always seen him as gay, personally. Him not being remotely interested in women unless it's for some manipulation he's pulling, and yet having some really tense scenes with L later in the show, leans me to believe he's interested in men. Maybe he's a bi king? I love the take that he may be ace, though, because it can explain some of the things he seems to feel with more clarity.

The imagery of Light collapsing from the building, taking a hard blow from L shows that 1 of the reasons why DN is so effective is cuz of visualizing things in a way that u wouldn't think be impressive or smth to boast about.
While w Tadaka in the class, I don't think his arm should be moving like that just by spinning his pen.

You know really thinking about it (before I finish watching this video) Light could of have just as easily had rem come with him since know one could see her and say “don’t kill him but tell me his name or kill him when I say it’s ok” and it’s like what’s stopping him? Rem was gonna do what he said for Misa anyways so it’s not like she would deny it
Part of the reason he can't JUST kill L is because he'd have to kill the entire task force and he'd have trouble killing his father. He'd do it if he had to, but if he can find another way, he would.
Also if L dies of a heart attack right after Light meets with him (with Rem behind him), it'd be suspicious.
Also, if Light tries to make up a plan where he controls L and has him appear on live television or something, it's unclear if the Notebook could pull that off. Is that something L would ordinarily do? If not, he'd drop dead on the spot (again, suspicious).
The Death Note's control does require the actions to be something that they are reasonably able to do.
