Good Advice. Times are Extra shit ATM. I 58 and I feel so bad for folks starting a family. My heart goes out to you all trying to put food on the table. So Berry is right. Dump what you don't need and give it a few months and start shopping if you need something.. But now is the time.
If I can run a studio in Argentina, you guys can run your studio anywhere.
Don't panic, you're golden.
Dónde? Me pasas la info? Info por ahi me podrias ayudar
100% Agreed.
Cheers, from Argentina
Awesome comment.

Patiently waiting for that SSL big 6 review.
Even more so, I'd love to see how he uses it and how it integrates with everything else in the studio. Workflow and what not.
I am looking forward to checking out your new desk. I totally agree that the integrated cable management is paramount. I just ordered a sit/stand desk with a 1 3/4 " walnut desk top. I will buy some walnut to build shelf for the gear and monitor and a pocket for the back of the desk for containing cables, power strips, etc. Good luck with the desk.
I'm a working musician/Composer A year ago work fell thru the floor. Now it is starting to pickup as so many have quit the business and moved on. I've been at it a long time. And I'm kinda picky now so I don't take every offer. Shortly there is going to be a situation where a lot of the middling talent is moved out to pasture and the production side of the industry gets a lot leaner. And yes gear prices have been just stupid. I cleaned out my gear locker last year as I saw this coming. I felt good to de-clutter anyway. Cheers.
Barry! You seem to be having SO MUCH FUN in this video! I love it! I'm happy things are going well for you. Love the videos. Keep up the great work, brother!
I have that same Argosy desk. Had it for 2 Yamaha 02R's.
Then I modded it for one O2R, 2 production desk and racks.
Excited to see your desk. I would say it’s not impossible to do inexpensive and good. I had an Argosy Halo for years until I blew out a disc in my back, now I have to alternate sit/standing. I built myself a new desk out of a single 4x8 sheet of plywood and put it on some heavy duty electric legs. Wish I had a CNC though, I achieved precision using templates and a router, so it took a bit.
Music and woodworking! Love it Barry!
You are sooooo right! I just scored me a Lynx Aurora (n) with 16/IO and the 4/Out & 2/In TRS on the HD Interface for a WHOPPING $1700. I JUST ORDER A NEW LT CARD FOR IT AND INSTALLING IT TODAY! ONLY 8MO OLD. This is a 3500-4000 device all day long!
Awesome! Can’t wait
Building your own opens up so many options and it can be done at a reasonable cost. Even with premium materials you can keep it well under $1k and get a killer desk customized for you. Plus weight equals stability, and when you build your own weight isn’t nearly as big of a factor
I built my own studiodesk last year and it’s perfect design for me. It isn’t that hard and didn’t cost me more than 300 bucks on materials. Definitely diy one if you’re handy you can make it perfectly unique to your own wishes 👌🏼👍🏼
Hi Barry!
Truth be told, I NEVER get bored watching your videos. And it will be interesting to see what you’ve come up with when you’re finished.
Personally, I’ve been using large-format consoles (like the Brits, you call ‘em “desks”, but to me they’ve always been “consoles”) since 1968, and the Trident 32-8 I’ve got now, I’ve been using for about 8 years. How can I get away with that? Simple. IT’S ANALOG! And the output signals are VERY clean. Once I’ve got an acceptable mix, the L&R outputs are digitized, currently with an Apogee D-A converter. How does it sound? MAGNIFICENT!!
Anyway, I can’t wait to see what you come up with, along with your new CNC machine. Good luck!
Ed
It may be. But people on marketplace are asking almost new $ for their gear. It’s ridiculous
It just sets and sets and they just wait and wait lol. It ain’t happening people
And they wait and wait and wait, what people ask and what they end up selling is significant lately.
@@BarryJohns I honestly think that prices going down might be a boon for sales. I have two vintage synthesizers that were worth $6-7K ten years ago that both sell for $25k today. Stupid money. Beyond inflation even. I couldn't afford those today and most other people couldn't either. I am hoping that as prices drop I might be able to move more gear. Of course, if the economy keeps going, as it has been, none of what I said above may happen.
You are a great craftsman in many ways,I love building also ❤
Thanks, and I'll look forward to a Barry Johns special in my place someday! Best of luck! May the force be with you!!
Wow Barry, I thnk you look pretty good for being 60. Keep doing whatever it is you're doing. I can't wait to see you do these builds. I'm also an avid woodworker as well as a producer/musician. I love doing anything related to music and wood. I know your studio desk build are gonna be freakin awesome!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! Much ❤️ BJ!!
Looking forward to the 16 rig review!
Oh yeah. I've wired recording studios and post production studios. Cable management is the biggest deal. I came in a Chief to a studio that put in 2 new System 5s and they had 100 foot MADI runs for 6 feet. No labels. Didn't know what was going where.
I wrote up a plan for each room, shut the studios down for 3 days and rewired the entire thing with the staff but only brought B online as we were able to test that first.
A wasn't online yet, so there was still sometime. Cable ties are your friend. So is a brother label maker.
I agree gear prices have been insane lately but I have noticed price drops on Reverb as the good times have come to an end. I recently picked up a API 527 for $650 and a Neve 535 for $725 in the same week.
I too built my own desk, but did not quite address cable management, so if I do it over, I would definitely modify my plans. It was my first time so you learn what went sideways as you gain experience.
Never a flop Barry 👍😊
Great idea on showing the desk build.
Thank you for this video. I am taking pictures right now and getting my excess stuff online to sell. With all the new technology coming who knows what the next cool thing will be. But, I do know I do not need all these dust collectors that I think I might use but haven't for a long time.
Native Instruments & Arturia are more my speed. Looking forward to the price drops in hardware!!! Peace & Blessings!!!
Arturia 16Rig is so tempting!
@@AdamsOlympia it is pricey but I'm sure it's quality considering the MiniFUSE series are super quality for the price. I'm sure the Rig16 is great!
Steinberg has been the most stable company.
I bought a Steinberg UR44....Very stable , with great drivers....Too bad the mic pres are noisy , and the headphone outs suck... I'll pass on Steinberg....
😳 you got a CNC machine bro? Real computer numerical control.? That is so gangster bro!! Man that -that is awesome! I got 10,000 streams this weekend on my songs on CZcams.. but I would love to have a CNC machine
I have always wondered why you did not do studio furniture and stands. Nice! I am looking forward to your products
PS, cant wait till you review the Behringer 369-KT and 1073 Clone they made. Seen some shoot-outs looks like its holding up
Super excited for that Arturia 16rig video! I have been sitting on purchasing that to extend my current Arturia audiofuse studio interface setup!
sounds fun
yes!! brother I can't wait to see it 🙌🙌❤️🎉
Hey Barry, i forgot to ask. What software did you use to design the desk? Like you were saying its 3D and 360. Autocad, or Autodesk etc...??
I'm curious to see your process of your wood builds!! I love building electric guitars been at it for long while and it really changed my view on brand name guitars.
I think I need to learn from you!
@@BarryJohns I made one video on my channel of a build if you want to take a look.
cant wait to see the studio desk, i keep wanting to buy a better one specifically one with better cable organization. Its just so hard to commit.
I built one last year I was able to build the perfect desk for me.
Wow a CNC machine Barry ?? Noice ,,,, u can make rims for cars with that thing
I think you are right but prices on Reverb started dropping last year!
I tell ya, these studio desks do not seem like major feats of engineering when you consider the price but then I think about the tools, space, time I don't have and I think... probably worth just biting the bullet and buying one.
Perhaps, I've never seen newprice drop and somehow discounts on hardware are pretty much non-existent in Europe (at least in the Netherlands). I have noticed however that almost everything I have bought new is going for about that same price now on marketplace.
As a fellow owner of a wall of purple wedge foam I approve.
It’s actually there for one reason alone, to upset all the mode up in the site people. Gets em fired up every time and I love it😜
Same!!! ❤
The Softube Console 1 MK3 is the way... Especially for people who run Logic as their DAW.
TRUST ME
That is so fucking badass. You literally make your own music production furniture. Respect 🫡
I've built a few studio desks over the years. I just subbed to your channel. Can't wait to see your desk build. #youdownwithcncyeahyouknowme
I’ll buy. Inflation gonna buffer in case it really falls.
Barry Johns Studio Talk - Is Sweetwater significantly dropping prices?
Yes, via deep sales. We just saw them and others run massive sales. This is how it’s done. The physical MAP, will take a while, all that matters is how much you are paying out the door. If you notices Gibson dropped prices on their w tire line if guitars.
Dear Bro ! The APOGEE Symphony line just gives the recordings more life . One can not explain it better ; ) RME ...not so bad tho ; cause can do a lot for money . But APOGEE Symphony ; it is THE Peak of Sound : ) . For mastering also BTW . Better than all the 10K converters combined . Believe that . Apogee has come up with true creations of technology ,that transformed bad sound into good one . That was 40 years ago . The expertise ,The Craft . Amazing
Isn’t Prism better?
As someone who has owned Appogee Symphony as well as others will say o agree very good conversion, I still prefer the Lynx Aurora LN to Apogee.
Next time show pictures as well. Will be kind. Thanks for an awesome video.
100% true…I’ve been saying this for the last year…..
I come here to often window shop 😊
Real question: Do you think all these plug-ins are going on sale because AI versions are going to drop soon that will render them sort of useless? I'm a bit torn, but I think it's inevitable and I can't tell if that's the reason. What is your opinion on that?
Barry, what size is your C&C machine? Wondering if your desk CAD designs will accomodate 36" x 36" sized C&C machines?
Mine is 30x48, it would be fine on your machine, may go through a little extra waste.
You should replace danger fox.
Unless you’re reasonably booked with projects or have a job to fund your passion watch your spending.
And if things get really, really bad and it could, what you already own maybe all you'll get. In WW2 they all quit making toys and made things useful for war.
This could be good advice for liquid assets, but it is just so hard to move used gear. Once its off the shelf its 40% off immediately even if its in excellent condition. Then the amount of trolls, dead ends, bots, ghosts, no shows and low ballers to sift through out there is absolute insanity. Its always easier to buy, but then you pay a premium and you gotta pay the tax man. I try not to get too stressed about market cycles when it comes to gear. My policy is if aint gonna get used sell it, if it is gonna get used keep it or buy it.
Your experience has never ever been my experience. I’ve actually had never had a single bad experience buying or selling used gear. I’ve always been able to sell any used gear that I bought for very close to what I paid for it. If anything were the greatest loss happens it’s when buying new.
Bravo!
Good, fast, or cheap. Pick two because you can never have all three.
Are you a doctor or a lawyer or something with all of that fancy gear?
Nope, grew up dirt poor, barely got out of high school, no college, just stayed positive, focused and worked very hard.
@@BarryJohns You should be proud!
🔥🔥
Whats your thoughts on the ssl big six?
Soon
What's up with the Big 6 behind you?
Well it’s coming for sure!
How can a 50-year old guy have 60 years of experience? You’re about 10 years older than I thought. Looking good, Barry!
Turned 60 a week ago, come on brother, these wrinkles are deep.
No, I won't sell. Instead, I'll wait and _then_ buy. Prices can drop all they like; so much the better for me. 🙂
All I ever see is Prices going up....
And that is what I’m trying to say is changing
did you say 60 years?
Yep
From KY here, what part of Kentucky are you from?
Nicholasville😁
Played a lot of gigs with a country band in that area. Seemed like I was always on New Circle Road back in the late 70s
When is UA going to release their new interfaces???
Apparently they have given up.
@@BarryJohns There's nothing wrong with their interfaces - they don't need to rush one out. This is just consumerism vs actually making music.
60 years bro when did you start?
I said I turned 60 years old
@@BarryJohns ok bro awesome Lord willing I’ll be 57 in December. Btw. What a good way to learn mixing outside of going to a school?
Why should i sell my gear? I'm not selling my gear. I'm buying gear.
Depends on where you are in what you own today.
@@BarryJohns it does not. It depends on fear and that will hold you back always.
God Bless Barry Johns 🙏🎸🎵
God Bless President Donald J. Trump 🙏🇺🇸
If nothing else the economy was in a lot better shape and we all had more money in our pockets.
Barry Johns Studio Talk, I really like your videos, let's be friends!
