    Bro I respect Robb Flynn so much after this video. As a black person who started listening to rock and metal in high school, it was always difficult for me to find out where exactly I "fit in". I didn't fit with the black kids because i "act and talk white" and while I did fit in with the outcasts, losers and freaks, I got seriously harassed during a show by some racist assholes saying I don't belong here. The racism in the community is rampant and so it makes me happy to see such a response from the community saying this can't be tolerated.

      My friend, I urge you to make a reaction video. I think everyone need to make a reaction video because it will show the voice of the metal community taking a stand against racism and opening the floor to a well needed discussion. If metal doesn't combat racism within its ranks, then we have no right to brag about our brotherhood.

    Robb Flynn's video was a real breath of fresh air. We really need more prominent figures in metal like him standing up against this kind of thing. And as much as I like seeing a person not directly oppressed by something stand up against it, it's also extremely refreshing to listen to a black person's words on this, because this mainly concerns you, you're a person directly affected by this issue, so I really got happy with finding this video.
    For a genre with such a youthful spirit, a genre (at least said to be...) for outcasts, freaks, misfits and nonconformists, there's so much bigotry and conservatism in the metal fandom, it astounds me. And like bigotry and conservatism in general, it just seems to be getting worse. There's so much rampant racism, classism, LGBTphobia, sexism and fascism in the scene (at least here in Brazil, there are so many rockers and metalheads that support ultra-conservative politicians, militaristic regimes, torture and police brutality)... I genuinely don't even understand how.
    So I was even surprised to be honest with the massive postive feedback on Robb's video and the massive backlash on Phil's attitude. As awful as this episode was, it generated a reaction of the community in general I genuinely wasn't expecting. It's bringing attention to this issue, making people think, and showing that a lot of the metal community is way more socially conscious that I thought. It filled me with a real honest hope.
    Like Robb said, it's not about being politically correct or anything like that. I myself am critical of SJWs, but seriously, this is nothing about SJWs, it's nothing about "getting offended at nothing". If you have basic social awareness and empathy, you SHOULD be angry with a nazi saudation and "white power".
    So yeah, again, thanks for this video. It was needed. And I hope many other metalheads and musicians, especially of color, respond to this as well, and let everyone know this kind of crap isn't going to be tolerated.

      Thanks so much. I made this video immediately after I saw Robb's, so this was more of an instant reaction. But I gave it more time to process throughout the day. You basically said what I came to the conclusion of in shorter words. I've been saying this everywhere hoping it sticks: I believe that if the metal community/culture is going to pride itself in unity and brotherhood then we need to do better in standing up to racism. Otherwise we are no better than the society we love to criticize.

Thanks for sharing your perspective man, because people like me see things from both sides of the fence, being multi-racial and all. So it's always interesting to hear from minorities within a subculture like metal. You're brave for expressing your issues with race in metal.

    I'll just say this. The REAL metalheads aren't racists because they get their own prejudice from people who don't understand metal. For a white metalhead to say white power is the biggest hypocrisy. And I am truly sorry you've faced more hardship from being a metalhead of color. Closest I got to that feeling was when I hung out with my black friends in south Houston and being called a poser for liking rap and metal both. But the way I see it is , both rap and metal are extreme genres and cultures , who both face their own stereotypes regardless of color. It would be such a better place if the people came without lables and just shared the love of music together.

    Hear, hear! I love Machine Head - even got to meet them once! And I have a ton of respect for Robb Flynn and the fact that he spoke up about this incident and what it represents. I've always passionately opposed racism (and other forms of discrimination), and I especially hate that it exists within the metal community; a community that is supposed to be the safe haven of all kinds of outcasts, underdogs, and people who have in general faced struggles in life. This is where we are all supposed to stand together and find equality and strength. To me, any Metalhead is my brother and sister, regardless of race, culture, gender or sexual orientation, and I would never have made jokes of any kind had I seen you at a metal concert. I would have thrown you the horns, headbanged with you, and treated you as a friend and metal brother - which you are already welcome to consider yourself as far as I'm concerned. \m/

    • @ojtheviking
      @ojtheviking Před 8 lety +3

      +Darwinianmedicine Spoken like one of those people who don't really know what metal is about. If you don't think it's a place where outcasts can join together and find strength together, you need to read/watch/listen to a helluva lot more interviews by the actual metal artists out there.
      Metal is not for "everyone", but it is for every race, culture, gender and orientation among those who are metalheads and feel like the scene and the music resonates with what's in their hearts, minds and souls - big difference.
      What it type of people it attracts (white males with long hair), is sometimes part of the problem. It should not ONLY attract people of that description, and a lot of bands and artists out there - as well as fellow metalheads - actually fight the notion these days that "long haired white males" is who metal is for.
      I mean, we have blues to thank for metal anyway, so there is no way, shape or form that "true metal" truly belongs to the white man. We need to be more humble than that, and gain more knowledge of musical history, and stop being so damn arrogant. Vikings in the old days didn't create metal, so I have no idea why the hell you would think that the ancestry of the white, long-haired male has anything to do with metal history. Two different things altogether, combined only by the fact that the white man has done what it always does through history: grabs something and says "now this is mine".
      As for Lady Gaga ... sure, metal isn't the only music genre where specific artists takes a stand on behalf of outcasts and so forth. But the entire soul of metal music is about finding strength within where not everyone thought it existed. Hence, lyrics with messages like "society is out to get me, but i will not break, because metal is on my side, my metal brothers keeps me true" etc (that's not a direct quote from a specific song, just FYI).
      And numerous times have fans approached their metal heroes (Lemmy, Rob Halford, Tony Iommi, etc.), thanking them for basically saving their lives. "I felt like the most worthless person in the world, I had no friends, I contemplated suicide, but I found myself in heavy metal, and I have you to thank for my life" - if that doesn't sound like the description of an outcasts who finds strength in the metalhead lifestyle, you need to think again.
      And to take that concept further, to include other minorities and other types of outcasts - other races who meets racism everywhere else, people with a different sexual orientations who meets discrimination everywhere else - is not only important, but it would be another kickass way to make the metal community a much more open-minded, diversity embracing and non-judgmental community than most other communities on this planet. If you don't see the importance of that, you are a part of the problem.
      Take more general history lessons, take more musical history lessons, and read up on interviews, and keep up with the current times, my friend, and you will better know what the fuck you're talking about.

      @ojtheviking Před 8 lety +3

      +Darwinianmedicine News flash, man: I AM Norwegian, I AM European. I know very well what the black metal scene around the 90s around here was all about. Besides, black metal is one of the generes - at least in the early days, but largely so in this day and age too - that is a part of the problem. Especially the NSBM scene. I am speaking beyond that narrow window of what the definition of metal is, and what many - and increasingly more - metal artists are fighting for these days.
      And despite what messages and views those specific Norwegian black metal bands have brought forth in the past, there are many, many, MANY Norwegian metalheads who stand strongly against such views and believe that the whole attitude, philosophy and lifestyle of those bands are extremely misguided. They certainly do not speak for me when it comes to what kind of metalhead I am, or what my views are.
      Not to mention the fact that many actual Norwegian FANS of black metal nowadays are also outspoken anti-racists, and in no way, shape or form share the most extreme views of the bands and artists they listen to - they might even listen to the projects of someone as crazy as Varg Vikernes and still think the man personally is a big idiot.
      Even in death metal, since you mentioned that genre too, there are people who think a bit further. Napalm Death's own Barney Greenway has a lot of political views that he happily shares; even in the latest Metal Hammer, he spoke of the terrorist attack in Paris, among other things, and spoke of topics such as anti-Muslim views etc. And Chuck Schuldiner back in the day distanced himself from namely the craziness of the Norwegian black metal community.
      And what a prejudiced way to describe it, when you say that on death metal concerts, nobody is "sobbing like outcasts". I am an outcast myself in some ways, and it does not mean that I walk around sobbing. In fact, that is my whole point - we are STRENGTHENED by metal, so we have no need to stand around and sob at concerts. But trust me, I know a lot of people from around the world; some of them are hardcore death metal fans (I am a huge fan myself), and none of them are sobbing at concerts either. They go to these concerts to feel like fucking unstoppable beasts that nobody else can ever mess with - which is the true spirit of metal. It has nothing to do with how strong you are already, it has to do with how much more stronger you feel BECAUSE of metal.
      Nevertheless: what the majority of the metalhead community consists of per today is not the issue. The issue is whether or not a more varied combination of human beings is welcome, and I say it is. Sure, it's a fact that most bands are white males, but that's a matter of ethnic culture, similar to how many black people are drawn to hip-hop. But that doesn't mean that everybody is already where they belong, and that this is how it should stay. Just look at the youtuber who posted this video; does he not have the right to be a metalhead, because he is African American? Yes, he does.
      You speak of thrash bands ... dude, go to Encyclopedia Metallum: The Metal Archives, and a world of thrash bands from all of the world will open your eyes to the fact that thrash metal does not exclusively belong to white Bay Area dudes. You mention what it's like in the US ... well, the US does not have any kind of monopoly on the true definition of what metal is, nor what the metal community should look like. I am speaking on global terms, and since there are metalheads all over the world, from all races, cultures, religions and - again - orientations, then who's to say which skin color metal "really" belongs to?
      Speaking of one or two sole genres within metal, and using the statistics of one sole country - a large one though it may be - is not proof of what the community is as a whole. And again, it is misconceptions and unhealthy opinions such as your own that many artists and bands are starting to speak up against nowadays.
      And do not mistake my own words for belonging to any specific religious point of view. If what I'm saying sounds like Christian cosmopolitanism, then that is a mere coincidence, because I am speaking from the point of view of a simple human being who recognizes other people's right to also be a simple human being, and a metalhead, no matter what labels others attempt to force upon them.
      To be honest, it sounds like you are mainly a black metal fan first and foremost; if that is the case, that explains how you perceive certain things. But you do not speak for the metal community as a whole, nor should you presume to do so.

      +jason laremueve I completely understand how you feel, but I don't think you should ask me what you as a metalhead should be doing. Just because Phil said something stupid doesn't mean Pantera is no longer classic. Even Dimebag used to play with Rebel Dixie guitars and I never cared. On the flip side people say Ted Nugent is an amazing guitarist but I'll never know because he says some blatantly racist shit and it doesn't sit well with me. So I think if you can stomach it, or if your love for the Cowboys overrides Phil's ignorance then by all means blast that shit. Me, I think it's going to take some time before I feel good about it.

    • @TheEeturHedd94
      @TheEeturHedd94  Před 8 lety +3

      +jason laremueve I'll set it to like this. Last year when the Confederate flag was brought in question (and eventually banned) Phil was asked about some things he said and Pantera's image back in the day. That's when I saw the video I mentioned. Phil admitted to what he said, but that was almost 20 years ago and he's since changed. So I accepted it. Now he does this shit, and I'm not only offended, but I'm disappointed in Phil who claimed to be a different person. I'm willing to concede that he made a mistake, but that's ONE FUCKING HELL OF A MISTAKE, and initially he wasn't even going to apologize. If it's because he was drunk (and he looks really drunk in the video) then he needs to stop fucking drinking and maintain his commitment to being a better person. That said, once I feel better about this I'm sure I'll have no issue playing Pantera again.

      +TheEeturHedd94 You got it. We need guys like Phil to be good role models, I don't think he realizes how many people look to him and Pantera for strength, they were a huge part of my generation's metal indulgence, they brought great things to this world and brought people up from the dirt. Just to piss on them with being a drunken ass at a show that is supposed to be honoring one of the greatest guitar players that has ever lived, no less ignoring the fact that he is likely the cause for why Dime was killed (not saying that the guy was anything other than crazy, he did blame the breakup of the band and lashed out, it's not a stretch to say that when Pantera did break up, Phil wasn't in the best physical or mental state). We need to showcase these issues with strength and intolerance of bullshit. I feel like this is one of those great moments where a community has a chance to grow and learn.
      It takes tragedy to get people to change. This is a tragedy of a failed leader doing his worst and putting his foot in his mouth. Phil needs to use his mouth for war, a war on oppression, a war on racism, a war on intolerance, a war on bullying, fighting for something that really matters. Phil can make this right. I really appreciate +SomeBlackGuy, +TheEeturHedd94, +MachineHead, Robb Flynn and everyone else for holding Phil to a higher standard. This proves to me again and again that the metal community is simply incredible and full of people who truly care for each other and fight hard to make the world a better place.
      For all of his flaws, I do think Phil can change, he can make this right, he can turn a new page so now after calling him out on it, I think the metal community needs to encourage Phil to find a good outlet for his ideas and try to be a better leader and role model to his millions of fans. Get well soon Phil, you might want to start with cutting out the drinking, just a thought.

I am not black, nor am I white, I am a Chileno that lived in Indiana for the first 21 years of my life, and have been insulted my whole life, people calling me mexican or bin laden, whatever they could think of. Music is music. People are people. I am so sick of this racism that is going on in America. I myself moved to Chile when I turned 21, and I no longer have to deal with racist comments when I'm walking down the street. But still, I can't help but feeling for people still in America that have to deal with such ignorance. At the end of the day, we are all the same. Stop this racist shit, and stop the violence.

I could tell this was a difficult video for you to make, my knees do that too when I'm nervous, it's annoying as shit :) Too much of the discussion about this incident has been just white guys like myself arguing with other white guys about which white guy (Robb or Phil) to support about racism in metal. It's still an important discussion but obviously lacks weight compared to shutting up and listening to someone who's actually a black metalhead. Best of luck with your band! Metal is something that should unite and not divide us. Phil messed up, clearly, yet even then I say we are all brothers and sisters. Great video by the way! Horns up

    Also, I have never seen hatred towards black people in any place I ever went (metal shows, festivals, etc.).
    I've seen people joking about seeing/meeting the only black dude in the show though. It's funny most of the time.
    Anyways, I don't believe Phil is racist. After hearing him explaining the context, I understand the situation.
    It was still stupid and bad to answer to a**holes that way, and he acknowledges it.
    And adding to that have seen Phil in situations that kinda shows he's not racist. But nothing of the contrary.

    Dude a really understand the way you express your thoughts and I agree that racism must die...metal is a type of music that includes so many genres and so many different approaches to the lyrics...there are always bands I find stupid, annoying, all about the money/fame, lyrics/music that don't speak to me at all and so on...So it is very possible to have some people that are narrow minded and try to push their ideas on others....On the other hand, metal was always a music of brotherhood cause of our passion for it and the fact that metalheads where the outsiders of a society...Still there are fuckedup people in our music community that can't figure out that racism is a type of cancer in our global society and there is nothing "good" about it..As soon as a person talks in a racist way, I believe that this in not a really "thinking" person, the processing power of his/hers brain in not in use...it is like a state of "stand by" mode....peace from Greece\\m//

    So I'm gonna say something, or rather ask a rhetorical question. Why is it do important to be labelled primarily as 'black'?, especially when life recently seems to move towards 'looking for inner beauty' and 'there's only one race, human'. I'm not saying you're not allowed to be proud to be white, black, orange, green, purple or whatever. but whenever I (as a white guy) see a black dude, east asian, south asian, latin or any other race at a concert, though as you say metal is mostly a 'white' genre, i don't see it as a bad thing at all, I don't see the skin colour, i just see another guy or gal who likes metal.

    • @TheEeturHedd94
      @TheEeturHedd94  Před 7 lety +1

      Essentially what you're asking is "what's wrong with the color blind philosophy?" The issue with it is that you're avoiding race as if it's an issue: Im going to ignore the fact that you're Asian so I can feel more comfortable about treating you like a human. No one is asking you to pretend not to see it. How about you acknowledge that people are different with defining cultural and physical characteristics and still treat you like a human. In fact, part of what makes our genre so diverse is what cultural styles we intertwine with it. System of a Down is a perfect example: they're definitely not white and they style they brought is unique and more than worthy of respect. Same with Sepultura. The point is we shouldn't have to deny what we are to gain acceptence. If come respectfully and willingly people should accept you FOR WHO YOU ARE not DESPITE WHO YOU ARE. Hopefully that clarifies it.

    Tony just saw your video obviously this is from years ago and I hope you're still playing music and still kicking ass. As someone who's a lot older than you who has been into rock music and metal since I was about 14 I'm now 54. You're right people do kind of try to take your identity I loved R&B music and never stop listening to R&B or pop or hip hop music. But when you're black it's almost like people draw a line in the sand it's okay for white kids to be all in the rap music but when you're black and you like heavy metal also it's almost like you're in the Oddity. I'm very sorry that happened to you at that concert I've been lucky I've went to plenty of rock clubs and of course this was in the '80s and the '90s and I never had any instances of racism other than I was one guy at a Bon Jovi concert and he was quickly shut down. But I've always been a fan of Def Leppard and Motley Crue and kiss and then when Metallica came out it changed my world and and then Slayer is always been right there for me. I remember hearing the lead singer of Alice in Chains talk about how when he performed in Spain and yes racism is a worldwide epidemic. There was a guy yelling racist words and he said he got right in the guy's face and it's not just metal Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish talked about how people would tell some of his bandmates that you guys sound really good if you get rid of that n word you might make it. The one true fact is it is music and music is for all people doesn't matter what the genre of music is it should be accessible to all people whether it's black metal or country or folk or whatever. Again I know I'm way way late and I hope this comment finds you well
