People shouldn't sleep on the remake. It's a fine film & definitely is very ambitious.
agreed!
Yeah, I kind of love both films.
Same. BOTH are great and both are different pictures. The remake was a slow burn that had me thinking of it for the entire day. I ended up rewatching it the next day.
Agreed, it's an excellent film that is due reappraisal, and a subsequent renaissance.
Suspiria is definitely one of the top 3 remakes of horror movies in my opinion the thing, evil dead, suspiria
Suspiria 2018 deserved an Oscar nomination for production design.
Both Suspiria movies are my favourite movies of all time. Thank-you for making a video on Suspiria, there aren't as many out there ❤
tysm & no prob girlie! 💜
You are doing a wonderful job of comparing the two. You are very right to do the extended version. Count me as a big fan of the original soundtrack. The opening melody, to me, is the innocent dancer entering the stage. As her dance advances, more sinister layers are added to the composition. This musical transition coincides with wicked characters dominating and encircling the protagonist. That music is so amazingly vivid.
tysm i appreciate it!
I would listen to a two hour deep dive on Suspiria (both, but especially 2018). Luca's version is my favorite film of 2018. And I don't usually care about having a favorite film of any year, but I immediately know that film will be the best for me. It's had a weird hold on me ever since I watched it in theaters. The cold and damp atmosphere is so good!
The choreography in 2018 was incredible! And Tilda definitely deserved an Oscar nomination.
The original is my favorite and the remake is very good. I own both on blu ray.
The 2018 version is SO good. It goes much deeper into the witch lore and delivers a darker, more interesting story. I feel like the original 1977 version is more a snapshot of the times.
They’re both a snapshot of their times. Wait 40 years just like you did with the original and you’ll see. Both good, but both definitely a product of their times for better and for worse.
The final scenes of both films are....wow! The Psychological pressure version especially, makes surviving all the Berlin sequence worth all the tension. I had grown up with the more contained Argento in certain Zombie films, I didn't know his lighting control was such an aspect! I can't choose, I love them both, my horror babies!
Suspiria 1977 is iconic Suspiria 2018 has better lore .
so true!!
You're so right! Where were you when I needed to write essay conclusions in uni? ✨️🤣
Im old.. could be here the whole day. Great work! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I haven't seen the '77 title, but I did see "Inferno". Suspiria was my introduction to Giallo films and I loved the remake. The Volk dance scenes are my absolute favorites.
I'm new to the channel, but am really enjoying the deep dive into the Suspirias. Both are amazing and commendable in their own unique ways. The original is wildly surrealistic, and introduced me to Goblin (if you get a chance to see Simonetti's Goblin PLEASE DO! - the 45th anniversary tour where they played live to the film was beyond incredible!). And man did that creepy "Roses are red..." TV commercial creep me out as a kid! But I have to say that the 2018 film hits much, much deeper, and is therefore closer to my heart. I love the way that it included the dance element as part of the craft and ritual (instead of merely being a front, as in the original), and how they used Suzy's/Suspiriorum's character to sort of reset the coven with a seemingly more positive focus (following the head-explosion massacre, of course!). It's a shame that it fell so flat commercially, but I'm certain that it will be rediscovered in time and gain the appreciation it so richly deserves.
To me, the '77 film is like going to a Spirit Halloween store on an acid trip, and the 2018 film is like sneaking into that creepy little occult shop at the end of a dark alley and hoping no one from your church sees you.
I prefer the original movie. I couldn't connect the remake.
The remake is my favourite film: it's such a rich, immersive, and hypnotic experience, with subtextual elements that go on for days. It stimulates both my mind and emotions, and I literally could not get it out of my head for weeks, when I first saw it at the cinema. The best way to watch it outside of the cinema is the German 4K, but that's unavailable now, I believe.
I like the original, but I really loved the remake because it it was a more straight forward story. I like abstract movie making as much as the next guy, but I find it difficult to parse out a lot of what Argento was trying to get across. Maybe it's a problem with my brain, broken by decades of dumbed down American media, but I just find that the easier to read remake to be a much more satisfying story to watch.
the remake is actually incredibly complex beneath its surface, and even the surface level elements are very nuanced. I won't go into it here though, as I'm releasing a youtube deep dive of my own soon.
Glad you like both films, same here. Too many people pit them against each other, and many Argento fans were openly hostile to the remake upon first viewing. I think that's calmed down a little now, which is good.
Wonderful video! This was thrown in my feed, so I am following in hopes of more!
I was so surprised by the remake, an unexpected gem.
I like both
And both have huge wtf moments
This was such a great video! I was aware of the differences and beef between both films, but you had such good insight! I agree with the idea that the 1977 film is iconic and bold, but the 2018 film has deeper lore (shoutout to the persons comment that said so)
I like the 2018 version, but the 1977 is to me simply one of the best horror movies ever made. And frankly I just love how much style/aesthetics over substamce it is. Truly a magical world. As someone who grew up in East Germany, the new one feels too real. Also, it fails to capture some of the intricacies of Germany, which has an uncanny valley effect. The 1977 one is just completely dissociating from this though
saw the 2018 in theaters & its still my favorite scary movie theatrical experience!! :) soooo haunting.
Heyla Layla, very incisive reviews and a lot to think about. I have been avoiding the remake, but you make it sound like they really transcended the original enough to create its own beast. That’s rare, but it happens. Now I want to check it out because I always trust your eye shadow, my friend. ❤
2018 just for the choreography alone is worth the watch.
Thom Yorke's soundtrack is a good quality of the second one. I listen to it on Spotify frequently, def has some unique and great songs.
Hi new subscriber here 😁
I absolutely love both versions!!!
The first of course is a classic.
Suspiria 2018 was a chore to get through, not only were the dances absurd and ridiculous, but Tilda Swinton, in this case, was a pill.
I love detail in extra long vids, and they'll make your name.
Make it 2 hour video! Your analysis is great and the movies can definitely be talked about in length
tysm! ive def thought of doing longer content, just gotta get the editing space required to do it 😅
In the mid to late 70's David Bowie recorded his " Berlin Trilogy " of Heroes , Low & Lodger drawing inspiration from the atmosphere of the city.
oh cool does that coincide with the Thin White Duke era?
@TheeElectricVenus Just after , The Thin White Duke is on Young Americans & Station To Station & the film The Man Who Fell To Earth ( You should see that film if you haven't ! )
Okay cool, def have seen the film & was actually debating to myself recently whether to cover Bowie films
@TheeElectricVenus I just watched Merry Christmas Mr.Laurence again & its fantastic.
ahhh love that one!
I prefer the remake, sue me. I can appreciate the older one, but it's just a bit too camp for me as a horror film. FOR ME.
Not the AI thumbnail
Good video.
They're both good. I really liked that in many ways, the decided to do the opposite of the original.
Because of that, I barely have preference because there so different (the original is more re-watchable).
I like the long videos.
The 1977 version is the best one. I wasn’t aware of any remake.
then how can u say it’s the best one 😂
The 2018 version is a good movie however I wouldn’t consider it a good remake because of the differences and how it drifts from the original.
I saw the original Suspiria many years ago. About 3(?) months ago, TCM was showing it and I DVR'ed the movie. I was kind of bored with the movie and just deleted from my DVR. Strange since I did see the entire movie the 1st time. I don't know, maybe I wasn't paying too much attention the 1st time I saw the movie.
The only problem I have with the original is how TERRIBLE JESSICA HARPER ACTS!!! I have seen her in 4 movies, and I just can stand how bland she acts. Yes girl, give us nothing
lol yes she is the queen of giving mid 😭
@@TheeElectricVenus it’s the 70s charm
@@zmarzlina no, it's B-Movie stuff. There are plenty of great films from that decade.
I have that crop top
yasss twinsiess
Great analysis. Really really great.
My take on the remake is that it's vastly superior to what I anticipated. I like the expansion on themes and motifs, and as you've dissected, the correlation established between the backdrop of the culture and political moment of the 70s Berlin and the narrative within the academy.
The only thing I don't like about the remake is the subplot of the other character played by Tilda Swinton, the elderly man. It's not that I don't get it... it's that I find the pacing issues it produces outweigh any merit achieved with its inclusion.
Lastly, and I hope this doesn't offend you, I find really off-putting the use of AI with the thumbnails you're resorting to lately. Maybe it's just me, but I preferred the much simpler and less flashier thumbnails from before, even without taking into account any ethical considerations.
tysm! honestly, as an artist myself, I don’t see anything wrong with AI thumbnails or art/imagery, I just wanted to try something new & to also lighten the load of content creation to try and increase my production sorry u don’t like it thanks for watching anyway!
I assumed you were using AI in order to get a little weight off the workload, yes. But anyways, you don't really owed me an explanation... thanks for the response.
And the main thing, as I said: really great work comparing and contrasting these two films.
like the first thing I said previously, tysm (thank you so much) , if it sounded like I took offense to your comment, I didn’t ☺️
1977 good. Remake not.
2018 anyday!, i feel the original just didnt age well, seems silly.
There's not a debate: Suspiria 2018 is garbage, Suspiria 1977 is masterpiece.
the comments would suggest otherwise 😂
There is no debate. The original is superior. The remake is forgettable.
look I’m obsessed with Argento’s version too, but Guadagnino’s holds its own. to each their own tbh
For me both are so original in your narratives and artistically. I Love both.
It's Argento being Argento. Awesome visuals, cool music, and everything else is out of a high school play.
100% agree. The remake is over-long, slow, convoluted, has a boring score and (intentionally) looks all washed out and ugly. Its fans claim it's so "deep" yet are never able to elaborate upon that. Who the f cares if it adds WWII / Nazi themes when it doesn't have anything intelligent or NEW to say. Meanwhile, the original was made almost 50 years ago and there's still not another movie that looks / sounds like it. It remains distinctive. I honestly think the remake is being propped up mostly by Guadagnino stans carried over from CMBYN, just like Rob Zombie fans insisted his Halloween movies were so great when they were straight up trash. Only difference is that the Guadagnino groupies are far more pretentious. lol
@@capkronos00 While the Argento original is classic and iconic for very good reason, I must say (at the risk of coming off as "pretentious" 🙃) that the 2018 film excels the original on many levels, mainly with regard to storytelling, writing, acting, etc. While I love Argento's film for what it is, its sheer goofiness regarding plot and performances (which is often excused as being "stylized") makes it too silly for me to consider it the masterpiece that some claim it to be. I am definitely NOT a Guadagnino fanboy - Suspiria is the only film of his that I've even remotely liked, let alone loved - but his Suspiria manages to create a style and a feel all its own while at the same time connecting the story and its characters not only to the era and environment in which it takes place, but also giving them motivations and resonance that makes the scenario more grounded in reality and relatable on a human level, while somehow giving more weight to the occult aspect at the same time. I really do love both films (the Synapse 4k release of Argento's film is truly a thing of beauty), but Guadagnino's film engages my heart, mind and imagination in a way the original never has.
So... agree to disagree, I suppose. It's all comes down to taste and personal opinion. That's why I'm enjoying this in depth analysis of the two films so much, as (thus far, at least) it's giving equal weight and appreciation to both films.
The newer version is so much better.
The color pallette and music in the original are really cool, but the story and acting are weak as fuck.
I just discovered your channel via this video and the first thing that unfortunately catches my eye is that your thumbnail is made by ai. Please reconsider using ai, it’s theft from real artists
as a “real” artist myself, i think the issue is more nuanced than that & my use of it is not the problem. sorry that this element is the main takeaway for u tysm for watching anyway!
I thought the remake was pretty awful. The route the director took was way too obvious and lame. The WWII / Nazi / civil unrest / "haunted by demons of the past" stuff is there for one reason and one reason only: It's the director waving a flag and screaming "Look at me! Look at me, critics, with my heavy themes!" The problem is, his movie has absolutely nothing new to say that hasn't been said a million times before in other, better films. His "elevated" take then is basically just (he thinks) "deep messages" with a slow pace, bloated running time, extremely bland color palette and sleep-inducing music score. And the end... what a laugh riot / disaster! Tilda Swinton drowning in latex and those awful CGI blood geysers had me howling. I guess it at least generated SOME reaction out of me but I don't think it was what the director intended.
I'll give the remake credit for two things: Good costumes and better acting. I disagree it had a better plot. It had MORE plot but it wasn't a good plot. The original had minimal story but at least it's fascinating from a visual and audio perspective.
Audio and visual......we shall agree to disagree. Thx for sharing your opinion
No debate needed. The OG is fucking perfect and should NEVER been remade. Fucking trash bullshit that anyone thought you should re-do a literal perfect movie. Fuck remakes. Have an original idea or just don’t make a movie
Some remakes are superior
I'm just glad that Carpenter and Cronenberg - to name just two - don't share your opinion. Otherwise, we'd have no 'The Thing' and 'The Fly'.
Nice video😘
