My Last Duchess by Robert Browning in Tamil by Bharath Ravindran. A messenger of the Count of Tyrol has come to Alfonso II, the Duke of Ferrara. The Duke intends to marry the daughter of the count. The Duke's last Duchess has died recently. The Duke is showing the portrait of the last Duchess hanging on the wall of his palace to the messenger. In this poem he gives his estimate of his last Duchess. Thus revealing unconsciously how his mind works. He presented an expensive jewel to the Duchess. He considers it as a mark of favour not as a mark of love. He was surprised to see his wife appreciated everyone. He thinks it below his dignity even to point out the common faults of his wife. He gave orders to stop her smiling. Thus she died as a result of his cruelty. He does not have shame when telling that he is expecting a rich dowry to marry the Count''s daughter. Unconsciously he reveals his selfish and greedy nature.
