Hyundai Motor Company, often abbreviated to Hyundai Motors and commonly known as Hyundai (Korean: 현대; Hanja: 現代; RR: Hyeondae, IPA: [ˈhjəːndɛ];[a] lit. 'modernity'), is a South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967. Currently, the company owns 33.88 percent of Kia Corporation, and also fully owns two marques including its luxury cars subsidiary, Genesis Motor, and an electric vehicle sub-brand, Ioniq. Those three brands altogether comprise the Hyundai Motor Group.
Hyundai operates the world's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea which has an annual production capacity of 1.6 million units. The company employs about 75,000 people worldwide. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries through 5,000 dealerships and showrooms.
Die Errichtung des neuen Werkes wurde im Jahre 2002 bekanntgegeben, als die Hyundai Motor Company sich als Sponsor der Olympischen Sommerspiele 2004 in Athen verpflichtete und bekanntgab, in Europa ein Werk zur Fahrzeugproduktion errichten zu wollen, deren Produkte speziell für die europäischen Märkte gedacht seien. So sollte dort zunächst die Kleinserien-Montage des Hyundai Grandeur stattfinden, die während der Ankündigung den Mitgliedern des Olympischen Komitees versprochen worden waren. Doch verschob sich der Termin immer weiter, da Hyundai sich auf keinen bestimmten Bauplatz einigen konnte. Letztlich blieb es dann bei den Grandeurs nur bei Importfahrzeugen.
So zog sich die Uneinigkeit über die Jahre weiter hin, bis man im Sommer 2005 neue Zielpunkte erstelle. Darunter sollte sich die zukünftige Produktionsstätte in einer zentralen Lage des Kontinents Europa befinden. Des Weiteren sollte sich das Werk in der unmittelbaren Nähe des slowakischen Werkes der Kia Motors Slovakia bei Žilina befinden,[3] da dieses für den Motorenbau zuständig sein wird. Die Getriebe allerdings wolle Hyundai im neuen Werk bauen. So erklärte Hyundai dieses zugleich zum offiziellen Schwester-Werk. Für das Design und die Entwicklung der Fahrzeuge nahm man die 2003 gegründete Rüsselsheimer Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center GmbH in seine Verantwortung. Zwischen 65 und 70 Prozent der verwendeten Fahrzeugteile sollen aus der Produktion tschechischer Automobilzulieferer kommen. Dabei sollten 4.000 weitere Arbeitsplätze in der Automobilindustrie entstehen, die bis in das Jahr 2011 hinein auf 11.000 Stellen ansteigen würden.
Im Frühjahr 2006 fiel dann die endgültige Wahl auf ein 200 Hektar großes Gelände im tschechischen Nošovice, wobei die geringe Entfernung von 50 km zu dem Kia-Werk ausschlaggebend gewesen sein soll.[3] Bis zu 300.000 Fahrzeuge sollten hier jährlich gebaut werden können.[4] Für die Errichtung war eine Investition in der Höhe von 1 Milliarde Euro vorgesehen. Tatsächlich aber stiegen die Kosten bis zur Beendigung der Bauarbeiten auf rund 1,2 Milliarden Euro an

I'm old enough to remember when Hyundai cars came to the US in the 1980's. The quality of the cars was cheap, only slightly better than Yugo.
Today, they're a major global player, with outstanding products.
